How do I switch my ny unemployment payments from prepaid card to my bank account?

So I've been getting unemployment benefits for about 6 weeks now after getting let go from my retail job in September. The payments have been coming through on this KeyBank debit card they sent me, which is annoying because I have to keep transferring money from there to my actual checking account. There's gotta be a way to get direct deposit instead, right? I tried looking around on the website but the instructions aren't clear at all. When I go to payment options it keeps showing an error. Anyone know the actual steps to switch from the card to direct deposit? I've already wasted like $18 in ATM fees trying to get cash out to deposit. Thanks for any help.

Yes you can definitely set up direct deposit! Login to your account, go to payment methods, and select direct deposit option. You'll need your routing number and account number from your bank. It might take 1-2 payment cycles to switch over, so don't freak out if the next payment still goes to the card. Make sure all the numbers are correct because if you make a mistake, it can delay your payments by weeks.

Thanks! Do you know where exactly the payment methods section is? I swear I've looked everywhere and can't find it.

It should be under your profile settings or account management. Sometimes the website is glitchy tho, try clearing your cache or using a different browser.

The NY unemployment site is the WORST. I had to try at like 2am when less people were on to get it to work 🙄

After trying for WEEKS to get through to someone at unemployment to fix my direct deposit issues, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at the unemployment office! They called and stayed on hold, then connected me when an agent picked up. Talking to an agent got my direct deposit fixed in 10 minutes. Best money I've spent to finally get my banking info updated correctly. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds fishy...does this actually work? I've been trying to call for days

Yeah it worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after spending hours on hold and getting nowhere. They just connect you to an agent when one picks up.

wait so what exactly do they do? just call and wait on hold for you?

Basically yeah! They have some system that calls repeatedly and stays on hold, then when a human finally picks up, they forward the call to your phone. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music 😅

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

I get the skepticism but it's literally just a call service. They don't fix anything themselves - they just get you through to an actual DOL person who can help.

I had the SAME PROBLEM!! That stupid KeyBank card is the worst. To change it, you need to go to your NY.gov account, click on unemployment services, then look for "update personal information" then "update payment method". It's super buried in the site. Make sure you have your bank info ready. And just fyi it took about 2 weeks for mine to switch over so don't panic if you still get one more payment on the card.

This is why i hate NY unemployment so much. They make everything SO COMPLICATED for no reason. Even something simple like changing your payment method requires a PhD in website navigation 🤦‍♀️

For real! And god forbid you make one tiny mistake, then your benefits get delayed for a month while you try to reach someone

The KeyBank card is actually a scam IMO. They make money off all those fees while we're struggling. I changed to direct deposit by calling the automated line at 888-209-8124, then pressing 2 for payment options. Have your account/routing numbers ready. If that doesn't work, their website is so broken sometimes you literally have to call and talk to a person. I used claimyr.com to finally get through to someone after giving up on the phone myself.

OMG thank you! I'll try the automated line first. Those fees are killing me!

If the website isn't working for you (which happens ALL THE TIME with ny unemployment 🙄), here's what worked for me: 1. Call the main number early in the morning (like 7:30am) 2. When it asks for SSN, enter it 3. When it asks what you're calling about, press 2 for payment options 4. Then 3 for direct deposit 5. Have your routing and account numbers ready If the automated system doesn't work, you'll need to talk to a human. Good luck with that unless you have 4 hours to wait on hold. I ended up using claimyr.com which got me through to someone in about 20 minutes.

Am i the only one who actually likes the KeyBank card? 😂 I've been using it for groceries directly and haven't had any issues. But if you wanna switch to direct deposit just call them, that's what my friend did.

The KeyBank card is awful!! I spent 2 weeks trying to change to direct deposit and the website kept crashing. Finally got through on the phone after using claimyr.com to connect me (seriously, it's worth it). The rep told me they've been having website issues with payment changes for MONTHS but haven't fixed it. Classic NY unemployment - broken systems everywhere.

Hot tip: if you're stuck with the KeyBank card for now, you can actually transfer the money to your bank account through their website instead of withdrawing cash. Login to the KeyBank card portal (not the unemployment site) and look for the transfer option. They limit how much you can transfer at once but at least you avoid ATM fees.

Whaaaat I had no idea! Thank you so much for this tip!

heres what you ACTUALLY need to do (ny unemployment agent told me this when i finally got through): 1) log in to your ny.gov account 2) select unemployment services 3) choose "payment method" 4) select "direct deposit" 5) enter bank info 6) if you get an error message, try a different browser!!! 7) if still getting errors, gotta call the automated line at 888-209-8124 8) as last resort, you need a human - good luck with that! took me days til i used claimyr.com to break through the website is literally from 2003 and breaks constantly, its insane how they expect people to use this garbage 💀

anybody else notice the KeyBank card randomly getting declined even when there's money on it? happened to me twice at the grocery store, so embarrassing. switching to direct deposit was the best decision ever.

just went through this last month! the direct deposit option on the website has been broken since august according to the rep I spoke with. your only real option is to call, but good luck getting through. took me 2 weeks of trying before I found claimyr.com which got me through to a real person. the whole system is a joke!
