How to transfer unemployment to bank account - NYS Department of Labor direct deposit setup

I've been getting my unemployment benefits on the KeyBank debit card for the past month but I really need to switch to direct deposit to my regular checking account. The ATM fees are killing me and I can't find KeyBank locations near me. Does anyone know how to set up direct deposit through the NYS Department of Labor system? I looked on my.ny.gov but can't figure out where to change the payment method. Is there a form I need to fill out or do I have to call them?

You can change your payment method through your my.ny.gov account. Log in and go to the 'Payment Method' section under your UI claim. You'll need your bank routing number and account number. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for the change to take effect, so you might get one more payment on the debit card before it switches over.

Thank you! I found the payment method section but it's asking for some verification code. Do you know what that's about?

yeah the fees on that keybank card are ridiculous! i switched to direct deposit after like 2 weeks of dealing with it. just make sure you have the right routing number because if you mess it up your payment gets delayed

How long did it take for your direct deposit to start working? I submitted mine last week but still got the card payment yesterday.

If you're having trouble with the online system, you can also call the NYS Department of Labor and request the change over the phone. But honestly, getting through to them can be really frustrating with all the hold times. I had better luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an actual agent who helped me switch my payment method in like 10 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm hesitant to use third-party stuff for my unemployment claim.

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through to the NYS Department of Labor phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it worked perfectly for me.

Just to add - make sure your bank account is in your name only. Joint accounts sometimes cause issues with the NYS Department of Labor direct deposit system. Also double-check that your bank accepts ACH transfers for unemployment benefits, some credit unions have weird rules about it.

What kind of error messages? Sometimes clearing your browser cache helps with the my.ny.gov portal issues.
