What banks does NYS Department of Labor unemployment accept for direct deposit?
I'm setting up my unemployment claim and trying to figure out which banks the NYS Department of Labor will accept for direct deposit. I have accounts with a small credit union and also Bank of America, but I want to make sure my benefits actually go through without any issues. Does anyone know if there are restrictions on what banks unemployment will deposit to? I've heard some people had problems with certain financial institutions.

NYS Department of Labor accepts direct deposits to most major banks and credit unions in the US. As long as your bank has a valid routing number and can receive ACH transfers, you should be fine. I've used Chase, Wells Fargo, and my local credit union without any problems over the years.

•That's reassuring, thanks! My credit union is pretty small so I was worried they might not be compatible with the NYS system.

Any bank that accepts electronic deposits should work. The key things are making sure you enter the correct routing and account numbers in your my.ny.gov profile. Double check those numbers because if they're wrong your payment could get rejected and cause delays.

•This happened to me! I mixed up two digits in my account number and my first payment got bounced back. Took an extra week to fix it through NYS Department of Labor.

If you're having trouble reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor to verify your bank info, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was stuck for days trying to update my banking information after I switched accounts.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford to pay extra fees just to talk to unemployment.

•It was worth it for me because I was losing benefits while waiting. The peace of mind knowing I could actually reach someone when I needed help was huge.

Just avoid prepaid debit cards if possible. Some of those have fees that eat into your benefits. Stick with a regular checking or savings account at an established bank or credit union.
