How to change direct deposit for unemployment benefits - NYS Department of Labor
I need to update my bank account info for my unemployment payments but can't figure out how to do it on the my.ny.gov website. My old bank closed my account due to inactivity and now I'm worried my next payment will bounce back. Does anyone know the steps to change direct deposit info with NYS Department of Labor? I've been looking all over the site but it's confusing.

You can update your direct deposit through your my.ny.gov account. Log in and go to the 'Payment Information' section under your unemployment services. You'll need your new bank's routing number and account number. The change usually takes effect within 1-2 payment cycles, so if you have a payment coming soon it might still go to the old account.

•Thanks! I found the payment section but it's asking for some verification questions I don't remember the answers to. Is there another way?

If you can't access the online system, you can call NYS Department of Labor directly. However, getting through can be really difficult with their high call volume. I had to try calling dozens of times over several days. When I couldn't get through the normal way, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent quickly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows exactly how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•How much does that cost though? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call

•It's actually pretty reasonable and saved me hours of trying to get through. Way better than sitting on hold for 3+ hours just to get disconnected.

MAKE SURE you keep your old account open until you confirm the new one is working!! I closed mine too early and had to wait weeks for a paper check. NYS Department of Labor doesn't make it easy to fix these things once they mess up.

•Too late for that - the bank already closed it automatically. Really hoping I can get this fixed before my next payment date.

You might also need to update your address if you moved banks, just saying. The whole my.ny.gov system is pretty clunky but it should work eventually.

I went through this exact situation last month! If you can't get through the verification questions online, you can also try visiting a local Department of Labor office in person. I know it's not convenient, but sometimes they can help you reset your account access or update the banking info directly. You can find office locations on the DOL website. Also, call your new bank and let them know you're expecting unemployment deposits - sometimes they can help flag your account to watch for any returned payments from your old account.

•That's really helpful advice about contacting the new bank! I didn't think about letting them know to expect the deposits. Did you have any issues with the DOL office visit? I'm wondering if they require specific documentation when you go in person to change banking info.

•@7a849787cf2c When you went to the DOL office, did they make you bring any specific documents to prove your identity? I'm thinking I might need to try that route too since the online verification isn't working for me either. Also wondering how long the process took once you were there - was it pretty quick or did you have to wait around for a while?

•@7a849787cf2c Yes, definitely bring your ID, Social Security card, and a voided check or bank statement from your new account. I brought all of that plus my unemployment determination letter just to be safe. The actual process was pretty quick once I got to speak with someone - maybe 15 minutes to update everything - but I did have to wait about 45 minutes in the office. They were able to update my direct deposit info right there and gave me a confirmation number. Much easier than trying to deal with the phone system!

Another option if you're having trouble with the online system - you can also try calling the unemployment customer service line early in the morning (like right when they open at 8am) or later in the afternoon. Those tend to be less busy times. When I had to update my info, I called at 7:59am and got through on the second try. Have your new bank routing and account numbers ready, plus your SSN and unemployment claim info. The rep was able to update everything over the phone and confirmed the change would take effect with my next payment. Good luck!

•That's a great tip about calling right when they open! I've been trying to call during lunch breaks and it's impossible to get through. Did you have to wait on hold for long even calling at 8am, or did they pick up pretty quickly? Also, when they updated your info over the phone, did they give you any kind of confirmation number or reference number for the change?

•@705bf3d91ca0 That's exactly what I needed to hear! I've been calling randomly during the day with no luck. When you called at 8am, did you have to go through all the automated menu options first or is there a direct number for banking changes? I want to make sure I'm prepared with everything before I try calling. Also wondering if they send any kind of email confirmation after they update your direct deposit info over the phone.

•@705bf3d91ca0 I had a similar experience calling right when they opened! Only waited about 10 minutes on hold, which was amazing compared to my previous attempts. They did give me a confirmation number - make sure to write it down because they don't send email confirmations. You still have to go through the automated menu but it moves faster in the morning. Just have your claim number ready because that's the first thing they ask for after you get through to a person. The whole call took maybe 20 minutes total including hold time.

Just wanted to add my experience - I had the same issue when my credit union closed unexpectedly. Besides all the great advice here, make sure you also check if there are any pending payments that might still try to go to the old account. When I updated my direct deposit info, I had one payment that was already "in the system" that still went to the closed account and bounced back. NYS DOL had to reissue it as a debit card payment, which took an extra week. So definitely follow up to make sure your first payment after the change actually goes to the new account. You can usually see the payment status in your online account a day or two before the actual deposit date.

•@fbdf5b97518e That's really good to know about payments already "in the system" - I hadn't thought about that! Since my bank account was closed due to inactivity, I'm definitely worried about a payment bouncing back. How long did it take for you to get the debit card reissued payment? And did you have to do anything special to request it, or did they automatically send it once the deposit failed? I want to be prepared in case the same thing happens to me while I'm getting this sorted out.

I went through this same headache a few months ago! One thing that really helped me was calling the NYS DOL technical support line specifically for website issues - it's different from the regular unemployment line and usually has shorter wait times. The number is on the my.ny.gov help page. They can sometimes reset your verification questions or walk you through alternative ways to access the payment section. Also, if you're really stuck and have a payment coming soon, you can request they put a temporary hold on direct deposit while you sort this out - better to get a paper check than have it bounce around between accounts. Just make sure to follow up because those holds don't automatically lift themselves.

•@562e46381eb9 This is super helpful! I didn't know there was a separate technical support line for website issues. That sounds way better than trying to get through the main unemployment line. Do you happen to remember roughly how long you had to wait when you called the tech support number? Also, when you mentioned requesting a temporary hold on direct deposit, did you have to call a specific number for that or could the tech support people handle that too? I'm definitely worried about my next payment since my account is already closed.

I went through this exact same situation when my bank closed my account unexpectedly! Here's what worked for me: First, try calling the DOL customer service line right at 8:00 AM sharp - that's when your best chance is to get through. Have your Social Security number, claim number, and new bank routing/account numbers ready. If the online verification questions aren't working (happened to me too), the phone rep can bypass that and update your info directly. They'll give you a confirmation number - write it down because there's no email confirmation. The change typically takes 1-2 payment cycles to take effect, so if you have a payment due soon, ask them to put a temporary hold on direct deposit so you get a paper check instead of having it bounce back. Also, definitely call your new bank to let them know unemployment deposits are coming - they can watch for any returned payments from your old account. The whole process took about 20 minutes on the phone once I got through. Good luck!

•@e284d73b3dcd This is exactly the comprehensive advice I was hoping to find! I'm definitely going to try calling right at 8am tomorrow with all my info ready. Quick question - when you asked them to put a temporary hold on direct deposit, did that affect your payment timing at all, or did the paper check come on the same schedule as the direct deposit would have? I'm just worried about any delays since I really need that payment to go through smoothly. Also, did the paper check come to your address on file with DOL, or did you need to update that too? Thanks for taking the time to share all these details - it's super helpful for those of us dealing with this stressful situation!
