EDD switched from Bank of America card to paper checks - how long until checks arrive?
So my situation is super frustrating. EDD apparently closed my Bank of America card without warning me (thanks a lot!), but they're still processing my benefits. When I checked my payment history it shows my last payment as 'outstanding' which I think means they're sending a paper check instead. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm kinda worried because rent is due next week and I NEED this money. How long do these paper checks usually take to arrive? My account is still active and I've been certifying like normal, just suddenly no card access. Anyone been through this?

This happened to me in January! EDD has been transitioning from Bank of America to Money Network for debit cards, but sometimes during that process they default to paper checks. In my experience, the checks took about 5-7 business days to arrive after showing as 'outstanding' in the system. Make sure your mailing address is correct in your UI Online account, because they'll use whatever address they have on file.

•5-7 business days? Ugh that's cutting it close for my rent. Do you know if there's any way to expedite it or check the status? My address is correct but I'm paranoid about it getting lost.

•2 weeks?? That's not what I wanted to hear... Did you call them at all or just wait it out?

I work with unemployment claimants regularly, and this situation is actually pretty common right now. The transition from Bank of America to Money Network has created some gaps. When your payment shows as 'outstanding' it means the check has been issued but not cashed. You're right that they're sending a paper check. The EDD mail processing center typically takes 3-5 business days to prepare and mail the check, and then USPS delivery adds another 2-5 days depending on your location. If it's been more than 10 business days since the 'outstanding' status appeared, you should contact EDD to inquire. Important: Make sure you're set up for direct deposit or the new Money Network card for future payments to avoid this delay. You can update your payment preference in UI Online under 'Payment Methods'.

•Thanks for the detailed info! It's only been 3 days since it changed to 'outstanding' so I guess I need to be patient. I'll definitely set up direct deposit after this - had no idea they were changing from BofA to Money Network. Appreciate the help!

THEY ARE DOING THIS TO EVERYONE!!!! My card got shut down with NO NOTICE and I had $1,890 on there that I couldn't access for WEEKS!!! EDD is THE WORST and they don't care at all about us. I had to call them 47 TIMES before I got through to a person who could help me. When you finally get your check, cash it immediately because they might try to cancel it or something, I wouldn't put it past them!!!

•I know this is frustrating but EDD isn't canceling checks after they're issued. The Bank of America transition to Money Network was actually announced months ago, though communication could have been better. Did you eventually get your funds or have your card reactivated?

Have you tried calling EDD? Sometimes they can tell you exactly when the check was mailed out and give you a tracking number. Worth a shot!

•I've tried calling like 20 times but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up on me! So frustrating!

•If you need to reach an EDD rep quickly, try using Claimyr. I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through for days but Claimyr got me connected to an EDD rep in under 25 minutes. They have a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. It was honestly worth it to get my check info. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. The rep I spoke to confirmed exactly when my check was mailed which gave me peace of mind.

wait are they replacing all the bofa cards? i still have mine and use it every 2 weeks, should i be worried???

•Yes, EDD is phasing out all Bank of America cards and replacing them with Money Network cards or encouraging direct deposit. It's been happening gradually throughout 2025. You should check your UI Online account and update your payment preferences to either direct deposit or request the new Money Network card to avoid any payment delays.

Update on my earlier comment - I remembered that my first paper check took 5 business days, but subsequent ones came faster (3-4 days). I think once you're in their paper check system, it gets more efficient. Also, I eventually switched to direct deposit and that was MUCH faster - funds available within 1-2 days of the payment showing as paid in the system. Highly recommend setting that up for future payments.

•That's good to know! I'm definitely going to set up direct deposit after this check arrives. Dealing with these delays is too stressful when you've got bills to pay.

I want to clarify something important here. The 'outstanding' status specifically means a payment has been issued but not yet cashed or cleared. For paper checks, this means the check has been printed and mailed but not deposited or cashed by you yet. If your payment is showing as 'outstanding' that's actually good news because it means the payment process is already in motion. The standard timeline is: 1. Payment shows as 'paid' in UI Online 2. Check is processed and mailed (1-3 business days) 3. Status changes to 'outstanding' 4. USPS delivers check (2-5 business days) So from 'outstanding' status to check-in-hand is typically 2-5 business days depending on USPS. As others have mentioned, direct deposit is much faster for future payments.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! It's been showing as 'outstanding' for 3 days now, so hopefully the check will arrive in the next few days. The EDD website doesn't explain these statuses well at all.

I went through this exact same situation last month! My BofA card got deactivated without warning and I was panicking about rent too. The good news is that once it shows 'outstanding' the check is definitely on its way. Mine took exactly 6 business days from the outstanding status to arriving in my mailbox. One thing that helped me was setting up Informed Delivery with USPS (it's free) so I could see scanned images of mail coming to my address each day. That way I knew exactly when the EDD check was going to arrive and could plan accordingly. Also, once you get this sorted out, definitely switch to direct deposit - I did that immediately after and now payments hit my account within 24 hours of being processed. Hang in there, your check should arrive soon!

•That's such a great tip about Informed Delivery! I just signed up for it after reading your comment. It'll be nice to have some peace of mind knowing when it's actually coming instead of just checking my mailbox anxiously every day. 6 business days from outstanding status is right in line with what others have said, so that gives me hope. Thanks for the reassurance!

This is such a common issue right now! I had the exact same thing happen to me about 6 weeks ago. My BofA card just stopped working one day and I had no idea why until I logged into UI Online and saw the payment was "outstanding." From my experience, once it shows as outstanding, you're looking at about 4-7 business days for the check to arrive. Mine came on day 5. The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking when you have bills due, I totally get it! One thing I learned is that you can actually call the EDD customer service line and ask them to confirm your mailing address and the date the check was issued. It took me forever to get through, but the rep was able to tell me exactly when it was mailed which helped me calculate when to expect it. After I got that first check, I immediately set up direct deposit through UI Online. Best decision ever - now my payments are in my account within 1-2 days instead of this whole paper check waiting game. Definitely recommend making that switch once you get this sorted out!

I received an email from BOfA telling me I had remaining funds in a closed prepaid account associated with EDD and to contact BOA to have a check sent to me, I called BOA and first had issues being authenticated however I was authenticated successfully once over the phone and given a timeframe of 10-15 business days to receive the check however I received a letter a few days later saying the account was placed on hold due to a failed authentication attempt and was told to go into a financial center and go through the ID verification process in which I did, I spoke to an agent who told me she successfully processed everything and that I would receive my check within 10-15 business days , I called today to get an update and they’re telling me the account has been frozen and to call the EDD customer service line, I’ve contacted the EDD customer service line and they’re asking me why would BOA refer me to them please help I just want the funds that are owed to me

I’m having another issue, I have been going back and forward between BOA and EDD customer service and neither seems to know what’s going on, BOA told me to call EDD I called EDD and was told they do not see any funds on their end I called BOA back and they told me as of 07/28/25 the funds were unloaded/taken back by the EDD but this is all after I have called and went thru the process of having the check sent to me, how can this happen if I was told the processing was successful for me to receive my check I’m extremely frustrated does anyone have any information

•This sounds like a really frustrating situation with the runaround between BOA and EDD! When BOA says the funds were "unloaded/taken back by EDD" as of 07/28/25, that usually means EDD recalled the funds to reissue them through their current payment system. Since you're stuck in this loop, I'd suggest a few things: 1) Ask EDD specifically about any "recalled" or "returned" payments from BOA on that date, 2) Request they check if those funds were reprocessed as a paper check or added to your next payment, and 3) Get reference numbers from both BOA and EDD calls to avoid repeating the same conversations. You might also want to try the Claimyr service that @Freya Pedersen mentioned earlier to get through to EDD faster since this seems like it needs escalation. This kind of inter-agency confusion unfortunately happens during these transitions, but your money should still be there somewhere in the system!

I went through this exact same thing about 3 months ago! My BofA card suddenly stopped working and I panicked because I had no idea what was happening. When I checked UI Online, my payment was showing as "outstanding" just like yours. The timeline for me was: payment went to "outstanding" status on a Tuesday, and I received the paper check the following Monday - so about 6 business days total. The check came via regular USPS mail in a plain white envelope from "Employment Development Department." A few tips that helped me get through the waiting period: - Set up USPS Informed Delivery (free service) so you can see what mail is coming each day - Double-check your address in UI Online under Profile > Personal Information - Start setting up direct deposit NOW so this doesn't happen again - it takes a few days to process but future payments will be so much faster The waiting is absolutely stressful when you have bills due, but the "outstanding" status is actually good news because it means your payment is definitely processed and on the way. Just hang tight for a few more days! And seriously, set up that direct deposit as soon as you get this check - it's a game changer.

•This is really helpful! I'm definitely going to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery right now - that seems like such a smart way to track when it's actually coming instead of just wondering every day. 6 business days sounds about right based on what everyone else is saying too. I'll start the direct deposit setup process today so I never have to deal with this again. Thanks for the detailed timeline and tips!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! My BofA card got deactivated last week and I've been certifying but the payments are just sitting as "outstanding" instead of going to my card. It's so stressful not knowing when the money will actually arrive, especially with bills coming due. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect about 5-7 business days from when it shows "outstanding" to when the check actually arrives. I'm definitely going to sign up for that USPS Informed Delivery that people mentioned - that seems like a great way to track it without constantly worrying. Has anyone had issues with the checks getting lost in the mail? That's my biggest fear right now. Also planning to switch to direct deposit immediately once this gets sorted out. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it's really helpful to know I'm not alone in dealing with this transition chaos!

•I haven't personally experienced checks getting lost, but from what I've read here and elsewhere, it's pretty rare with EDD checks since they use certified mail processes. The USPS Informed Delivery is definitely your best bet for peace of mind - you'll get to see a scanned image of your mail each morning so you'll know exactly when the EDD check is coming. If for some reason it doesn't arrive within 10 business days of the "outstanding" status, that's when you'd want to contact EDD about a replacement. But honestly, based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like you're probably looking at getting it early next week if it just went to outstanding last week. The direct deposit switch is definitely the way to go after this!

I'm dealing with this same issue right now and it's such a relief to find this thread! My BofA card stopped working three days ago and I had no idea what was happening until I checked UI Online and saw my payment as "outstanding." I was freaking out because I have rent due in a few days. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect the check to arrive sometime early next week (around 5-7 business days from outstanding status). I just signed up for USPS Informed Delivery after reading all these recommendations - what a great tip! I'm also going to start the direct deposit setup process today so I never have to go through this stress again. It's frustrating that EDD didn't give better warning about the BofA transition, but at least now I know the "outstanding" status means the check is actually on its way. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and experiences - it really helps to know this is normal and temporary!

•You're absolutely doing the right things! The USPS Informed Delivery is such a game-changer for peace of mind - you'll get that daily email showing scanned images of incoming mail so you'll know exactly when your EDD check is arriving. Based on everyone's experiences here, you're looking at early next week which should hopefully work out for your rent timing. The direct deposit setup is definitely worth doing now while you're thinking about it - I made that switch after my first paper check experience and it's been so much smoother since then. Hang in there, the "outstanding" status really is good news that your payment is processed and on the way!

I went through this exact situation about 2 months ago and completely understand the stress! My BofA card was suddenly deactivated with zero warning, and like you, my payment was showing as "outstanding" which had me worried about rent. From my experience, once it shows "outstanding" you're typically looking at 4-6 business days for the check to arrive. Mine came on day 5. The key thing to remember is that "outstanding" actually means the check has been issued and mailed - it's just waiting for you to receive and cash it. Here's what helped me during the wait: 1. Set up USPS Informed Delivery (free) so you can see scanned images of incoming mail each day 2. Double-check your address in UI Online is correct 3. Start the direct deposit setup process NOW - it takes a few days to activate but future payments will hit your account in 1-2 days instead of this whole paper check ordeal The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking when bills are due, but hang in there! Your check should arrive within the next few business days. And definitely make the switch to direct deposit after this - I did and it's been so much faster and less stressful.

•This is exactly the reassurance I needed to hear! It's so helpful to know that "outstanding" actually means good news - the check is already processed and on its way. I was interpreting it as something being wrong with my payment. I just set up the USPS Informed Delivery like you suggested, and I'm going to start the direct deposit process today. It's crazy how stressful this transition has been with no clear communication from EDD about what was happening. Thanks for breaking down the timeline so clearly - knowing it's typically 4-6 days from outstanding status really helps me plan around my rent deadline!

I'm currently going through this exact same situation! My BofA card got deactivated about a week ago with no warning, and I've been certifying but my payments are showing as "outstanding" instead of going to the card. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really reassuring - I was starting to panic that something was seriously wrong with my claim. It sounds like the consensus is about 5-7 business days from when it shows "outstanding" to when the paper check actually arrives in the mail. I'm going to sign up for that USPS Informed Delivery service that several people mentioned - that seems like such a smart way to track when it's coming without just anxiously checking the mailbox every day. I'm also planning to set up direct deposit immediately once this check arrives. It's frustrating that EDD didn't communicate this BofA to Money Network transition better, but at least now I understand what's happening. Has anyone had success reaching EDD by phone to confirm when their check was actually mailed? I've tried calling but keep getting the high call volume message and then disconnected.

•I had the same issue with getting through to EDD by phone - it's incredibly frustrating! What finally worked for me was calling right at 8:00 AM when they open, and I used the technique someone mentioned earlier about pressing certain numbers to get past the automated system faster. It still took about 45 minutes on hold, but I eventually got through to a rep who confirmed exactly when my check was mailed. They were actually pretty helpful once I finally reached a human! You might also want to try that Claimyr service that @Freya Pedersen mentioned - I ve'heard good things about it for getting through to EDD faster. Hang in there, your check should definitely arrive within the next few days based on everyone s'timelines here!

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now and it's so stressful! My BofA card got shut off about 4 days ago with zero warning, and I've been certifying but my last payment is showing as "outstanding" instead of going to my card. I have bills due next week too so I totally feel your panic. After reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should expect the paper check to arrive in about 5-7 business days from when it first showed as "outstanding." That's actually somewhat reassuring because I thought "outstanding" meant something was wrong with my payment, but it sounds like it just means the check is already processed and on its way. I just signed up for USPS Informed Delivery after seeing multiple people recommend it - what a great tip! Now I'll get daily emails showing scanned images of my incoming mail so I'll know exactly when the EDD check is arriving instead of just anxiously checking my mailbox multiple times a day. I'm also going to start setting up direct deposit today while I'm thinking about it. This whole BofA to Money Network transition has been such a mess with no clear communication from EDD about what was happening. But based on everyone's timelines here, it sounds like once you switch to direct deposit, payments hit your account within 1-2 days instead of this whole paper check waiting game. Definitely making that change after I get this sorted out!
