Wrong payment option for NY unemployment tourism recovery payment - how to change to check?
I just received an email about my NY unemployment tourism recovery payment and stupidly selected direct deposit when I actually wanted to receive a check. Does anyone know if there's a way to change my payment option now? I've been trying to call the NYSDOL but can't get through to a real person. Has anyone else made this mistake or know who I should talk to? Really don't want my payment to get messed up since I've been waiting for this for weeks!

•Ughhh that's what I was afraid of. The problem is I moved recently and my bank account info might be outdated in their system. I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow.

Yes, you can change your payment method, but you need to speak with an agent directly. According to NYSDOL guidelines, payment selection changes must be processed manually by a representative. I'd recommend you call (888) 209-8124 and use the prompts for "payment method issues" if that's an option. Be prepared with your NY.gov ID, the last 4 of your SSN, and the reference number from the tourism recovery email. The tourism recovery payments are being processed in batches through July 2025, so you should try to make this change as soon as possible before your payment is processed.

•Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Do you know if there's a specific time when it's easier to get through? I've been calling for 2 days and keep getting the 'all representatives are busy' message.

•Calling between 8:00-8:30am or 4:30-5:00pm tends to have slightly shorter wait times. Wednesdays and Thursdays are usually less busy than Mondays. Make sure you're calling from the phone number registered with your claim, as some calls are prioritized based on caller ID matching.

I tried changing my payment type for THREE WEEKS and never got through!!! The whole tourism recovery program is a JOKE - they make it IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone. I called 30+ times and always got disconnected or told to call back later. Their system is DESIGNED to prevent you from getting help!!!

•Oh no, that's discouraging. Did you ever manage to get it changed or did it just process with the wrong payment method?

•They ended up sending it to my old account that was closed and then I had to wait ANOTHER 6 weeks for them to reissue it!!! Total nightmare. The tourism recovery money is nice but dealing with NYSDOL is like banging your head against a wall.

I successfully changed my payment method for the tourism recovery program last week. After being frustrated with the phone system, I used Claimyr to get through to an agent quickly. Their service connects you with unemployment agents by saving your place in line. I watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE) and was talking to someone within 20 minutes. The agent was able to update my payment preference from direct deposit to check with no issues. You just need to have your claim ID and verification info ready.

•does this claimyr thing actually work? i always thought those kinds of services were scams. has anyone else tried it?

•It's legitimate - I was skeptical too. It basically keeps dialing for you and secures your place in line. You still talk directly with the actual NYSDOL representatives, Claimyr just helps you get through the phone system.

•Thank you, I'm going to check out that video! At this point I'm desperate to get this fixed before they try to send the money to my old account.

I had the same problem with my tourism recovery payment! What I did was email them at TourismRecovery@labor.ny.gov with my full name, last 4 of SSN, and phone number in the subject line. Then in the email I explained I selected the wrong payment option and needed to change it. They got back to me in 3 days and fixed it! Way easier than calling.

•Thank you! I'll try this right now. Did they send you a confirmation email when they made the change?

•Yes, they sent an email saying something like "Your payment preference has been updated. Please allow 3-5 business days for the change to process in our system." It was pretty quick!

my cousin works for unemployment and she said the tourism recovery payments are super backed up right now because so many ppl applied. she said if u want to change payment method u have to do it at least 7 days before ur scheduled payment date. do u know when yours is supposed to go out?

•They didn't give me an exact date - the email just said my payment was "approved and will be issued in the coming weeks." That's why I'm panicking a bit since I don't know how much time I have.

I've dealt with NY unemployment for years now (sadly lol) and here's what you need to know: the tourism recovery payments work differently than regular UI payments. For tourism recovery, they process changes up until 4 days before payment. BUT you MUST speak to a tier 2 representative. The regular agents can't help. When you call, specifically ask for a "payment preference specialist" or to be transferred to tier 2. Also make sure to mention it's specifically for the tourism recovery program, not regular UI. They're different systems. Good luck!

•This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize I needed to talk to a tier 2 rep specifically. I'll make sure to ask for that when I call.

•I just got the approval email yesterday, so I don't have the actual payment yet. I applied about 3 weeks ago if that helps!

UPDATE: I wanted to let everyone know what worked! I tried calling for days with no luck, but after seeing the suggestions here, I tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned. It actually connected me to an agent in about 30 minutes. The rep was able to change my payment method from direct deposit to check! She said I caught it just in time as my payment was scheduled to go out next week. Thanks everyone for your help!

•That's great news! Glad you got it sorted out before they sent it to the wrong account.

•Lucky you got through! Make sure to keep checking your mail - sometimes those checks can take forever to arrive or get lost. I'd call again if you don't receive it within 2 weeks after they say it's sent.
