Anyone get their NY unemployment tourism industry refund yet?

So I worked at a major hotel in Manhattan for almost 4 years before getting laid off in August 2022 due to "restructuring" (they really just wanted cheaper staff). I filed for unemployment right away and qualified since I'd been there so long. In March 2023, I got this email about a tourism worker relief program that was offering one-time payments of around $3400 to eligible workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic fallout. I applied immediately when applications opened in April and got a confirmation email saying they received my application. The website said payment would be processed in 6-8 weeks. It's been almost 4 months now and I haven't received anything! The status checker just says "pending review" but nothing else. I've tried calling the number they provided at least 20 times but can never get through to an actual person - just endless recordings saying they're experiencing high call volumes. Has anyone who worked in tourism/hospitality actually gotten their payment yet? Is there a secret way to check your status or talk to someone? I'm getting really frustrated because I could really use that money right now and they promised it would come much faster.

I worked at a restaurant near Times Square and applied for the same thing back in April. Still nothing. Status says "approved" but no money in my account. When I call it just rings forever or disconnects me. NY unemployment system is a joke.

At least yours says approved! Mine is still stuck on pending review. Did you get any kind of email when it changed to approved?

0 coins

Nope, no email. I just obsessively check the portal every day lol. But honestly, "approved" doesn't seem to mean much if they never actually send the money 🤷‍♂️

The whole thing feels like a publicity stunt. They announce this big program to help tourism workers but then make it impossible to actually get the money. Classic NY politics 🙄

After trying to reach someone for WEEKS about my tourism relief payment, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a real person from unemployment! Best money I've ever spent to finally get my issue resolved. They actually did the calling and waiting on hold part for me, then connected me when an agent picked up. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my payment was delayed (missing document they never told me about) and how to fix it. Got my payment 10 days later! Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this some kind of scam? how can a third party service get through when nobody else can?

0 coins

Not a scam at all! They basically just automate the call process and stay on hold for you. When they get someone they call your phone and connect you. Saved me literally hours of hold time and frustration.

0 coins

sounds too good to be true... has anyone else used this?

0 coins

I tried it last week after seeing someone mention it here. It actually worked - got a call back in about 2 hours with a real person on the line. Shocking after trying for days myself and never getting through.

0 coins

hmm interesting. might give it a shot since ive basically given up on getting a human any other way

My coworker just got hers last week! She applied in early April so it took about 14 weeks total. She said there was no notification - the money just appeared in her bank account one day. Maybe check if they have your correct direct deposit info?

0 coins

I've been checking daily and nothing yet. Applied April 3rd, status has been "under review" forever. I called my state assembly person's office and they said they're getting TONS of complaints about this program. The rep told me they're completely overwhelmed and understaffed. Typical NY unemployment mess. 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

Good idea calling your assembly person - did they offer any help or just confirm it's a mess?

0 coins

They took my info and said they'd "inquire" but that was 3 weeks ago and haven't heard back. Worth a try though!

0 coins

GUYS I FINALLY GOT MY PAYMENT YESTERDAY!! Applied April 2, status never changed from "pending review" but money showed up in my account! $3,362 after taxes. There's hope! Keep checking your accounts even if the status doesn't update.

0 coins

Omg congrats!! That gives me hope. Did you do anything special or just wait it out?

0 coins

Just waited tbh. But I did upload EVERY possible document they might want during the application - pay stubs, termination letter, everything. Maybe that helped avoid delays? idk

0 coins

Was your deposit labeled as anything specific? Want to make sure I don't miss it if it comes through.

0 coins

Mine said "NYS DOL TOUR RELIEF" in my bank transaction history.

This is literally the BIGGEST scam ever. I was a hotel manager for 10 years, lost my job in 2021, applied for this in April, and just got a denial letter saying I "didn't provide sufficient proof of employment in tourism sector" even though I literally sent them W2s from a MAJOR HOTEL CHAIN. The whole thing is a PR stunt to make it look like they're helping tourism workers. 😡

0 coins

Same thing happened to my roommate! Worked at a Broadway theater for years and got denied for same reason. The appeal process looks completely pointless too.

0 coins

Omg that's terrifying. Did they give you any way to appeal or resubmit docs?

0 coins

There's an appeal form but it says it takes 60-90 days to process and you can't submit new documents. Complete joke.

I'm an unemployment counselor (not official, just help people navigate the system). Here's what I know about the tourism relief payments: - They are MASSIVELY backlogged. The program got about 4x more applications than they anticipated. - Payments are going out in batches each Friday, but they're only processing about 5,000 applications per week (out of over 100,000 received). - Direct deposit is MUCH faster than paper checks. If you didn't provide direct deposit info, expect additional 2-3 week delay. - The "pending review" status often doesn't update even after they've approved you. Many people are seeing money before their status changes. - If you need to speak with someone urgently, normal calling methods won't work. Either use claimyr.com to get a callback or contact your local state assembly person's office. - They ARE verifying employment details extensively, so if anything on your application doesn't match your unemployment records, that will cause delays. Hope this helps! The system is frustrating but payments ARE going out slowly.

This is super helpful, thank you! Do you know if they're going in any particular order (like application date) or is it random?

0 coins

From what I can tell they're going roughly by application date, but applications with "clean" records (perfect match with existing unemployment data) are getting prioritized.

0 coins

Thanks for this detailed info! Do you think it's worth trying to call them again or just wait it out at this point?

0 coins

If you're still at "pending review" after 12+ weeks, definitely worth trying to speak with someone. The claimyr.com service is worth it if you've already wasted hours trying to get through on your own.

0 coins

anyone trying to call the 888 number they provided is wasting their time. i worked at DOL before (not anymore thank god) and they literally don't have enough staff to answer those calls. they just go to a queue that nobody monitors.

0 coins

I received mine last week. Took exactly 13 weeks from application to payment. I never got any update emails or status changes - the money just showed up. One thing I noticed - I had a friend who applied same day and he hasn't gotten his yet, but I had uploaded more documentation than required (not just W2s but also my termination letter and last paystub). Think that might have helped my case get processed faster?

0 coins

Interesting! I only uploaded the minimum required documents. Maybe I should try to add more if that's even possible at this point?

0 coins

Not sure if you can add docs after submitting, but might be worth trying to login and check. Could explain the delays for some people.

0 coins

they sent me a determination letter yesterday saying im eligible but the payment is "pending final verification." whatever that means. been 15 weeks since i applied. NY unemployment making us jump through hoops for money they promised us 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

My cousin works for the state (not DOL but another agency) and she said they've had MASSIVE fraud with this program which is why they're being so slow and careful. Apparently a lot of people who never actually worked in tourism are trying to claim the money.

0 coins

that tracks... ruins it for those of us who actually qualified and need the help 😑

0 coins

Makes sense but still frustrating when we provided all the proof they asked for!

PROTIP: If your status has been stuck on pending for more than 12 weeks, try logging in and clicking the "Contact Us" button, then selecting "Application Status Inquiry" from the dropdown. I did this last week after being stuck since April, and miraculously got my payment 3 days later. I think it flags your application for review.

0 coins

Omg thank you for this tip!! Just did it. Fingers crossed 🤞

0 coins

I tried this last month and it didn't do anything for me sadly. Still waiting...

0 coins

It might depend on where your application is in the process. Worth a try though!

0 coins

after TWO MONTHS of calling that stupid number every day, i used claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in like 90 minutes. the agent told me my application had a "technical flag" because my employer used a different industry code on my w2 than what they were looking for. he removed the flag and i got paid the next week. nobody wouldve told me this if i hadnt finally gotten through!

what's this claimyr thing? another way for them to make money off our desperation? 🙄

0 coins

it's just a service that does the calling and waiting for you. when they get a human they call your phone. saved me hours of frustration and hair pulling lol. totally worth every penny when you consider how many hours of my life i wasted on hold before.

Mei Wong

hmm i might check it out, im desperate at this point

i think the whole program is a scam tbh. ny state announced this big relief program to look good in the press but never had a plan to actually distribute the funds efficiently. classic government move - big promises, garbage execution.

I'm a former tour guide who applied on April 5th. Just got my payment today (August 12th). So it took just over 4 months total. Hang in there everyone, they ARE slowly processing them!

0 coins

This gives me hope! Did your status ever update online or did the money just show up?

0 coins

Status never changed from "pending review" - the money just appeared in my account this morning! Check your bank not the website.
