< Back to New York Unemployment

Lost job after 12 years, been claiming NY unemployment for months with no response - can't reach anyone!

I got let go from my position in mid-August after working at the same company for 12 years. My supervisor gave some vague reasons about restructuring but I'm pretty sure it was a personality conflict with the new management team. Anyway, I filed for NY unemployment right away and have been diligently certifying every week since then. It's now been almost 4 months and I haven't received a single payment or even a determination letter. The claim status just shows as "pending" every time I check. I've tried calling the unemployment office literally hundreds of times but either get disconnected or stuck on hold until the system hangs up on me. I've sent emails through their contact form, tried reaching out on social media, and even contacted my state representative but nothing has worked. My savings are almost completely drained. Does anyone know how to actually get through to a real person who can help? I'm getting desperate here.

Try waking up at 7:55am and start calling them right at 8am when they open. Thats how I finally got through after weeks of trying. Keep redialing if it hangs up. I had to call 47 times in one morning but eventually got through.

Thanks, I'll try that. Did you use a specific number? I've been calling the main line.

I used the main 888 number. Just kept hitting redial over and over. It was super annoying but worth it when I finally got through.

I tried that strategy for 3 weeks with no luck. The early morning thing is actually when EVERYONE tries to call ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

After dealing with the same nightmare for weeks, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - saved my sanity! They basically wait on hold for you and call when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing again after months of radio silence. Worth every penny since I got all my backpay in one shot after the call. They also have this helpful explainer video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds kinda sketchy tbh... anyone else try this?

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried so many 'tricks' already

I get the skepticism, I was hesitant too. But after 3 months of nothing, I was desperate. They just call and wait on hold, then connect you when someone answers. Got my backpay sorted in one 20-min convo with an agent.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? ๐Ÿ™„

No catch - they just do the hold time for you. Been there, done that, got my money. Up to you if you wanna keep calling yourself and getting nowhere ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The NY unemployment system is totally broken. I was in the exact same boat - worked 9 years at my company, let go in reorg, filed in April and didn't get paid until August. What finally worked for me was finding my local state assembly person and having their office intervene. Google your district rep and call them - they have special channels.

Try sending an email to your local assemblyperson or state senator. I did that after two months of nothing and suddenly my claim started moving. They have direct contacts at the unemployment office.

I actually tried contacting my state rep but haven't heard back from their office either. Sent the email about 3 weeks ago..

Call them directly! Email is useless. Their offices actually have staff dedicated to helping with unemployment issues.

Check if theres any issues with your claim that might be causing the delay. Common problems include: employer contesting the termination, identity verification issues, missing documents, or answering a certification question wrong. Any of these can put your claim in limbo without them telling you.

How would I even know if there's an issue? There's nothing in my online account showing problems, just says "pending".

Unfortunately the only way to know for sure is to speak with an agent. The online system is useless for explaining whats actually happening with your claim. You need to get someone on the phone.

Honestly, after 2 months of trying everything, I broke down and used claimyr.com to get through to someone. Had a real person on the phone in under 2 hrs after trying for weeks with no luck. Found out my former employer was disputing my claim (thanks a lot) and got it resolved in one call. Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet.

Did it actually work? I've seen a couple comments about this service but I'm real hesitant about spending money when I'm already broke from no unemployment

Yeah it worked. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 8 weeks of nothing. Got connected with an agent who fixed my issue and my backpay hit my account 3 days later. Do what you want, but I wish I'd done it sooner.

If your boss fired you, make sure you're answering the certification questions correctly. If you say you were fired instead of laid off, they might be investigating for misconduct which takes forever. Also double check that your employment dates match what your employer reported.

Here's what worked for me with NY unemployment after being stuck for months: 1) Call right when they open at 8am, but try the LESS known number (1-888-209-8124) instead of the main line 2) If that doesn't work, file a formal complaint through the NYS DOL website about not receiving benefits 3) Contact your state assembly person AND state senator (do both!) 4) If all else fails, use a service like claimyr.com - it's the only thing that got me through after 3 months of nothing. They wait on hold and call you when a real agent picks up. 5) Once you get someone, be super nice but VERY specific about how long you've been waiting and what you've tried. Ask them to escalate if needed. 6) Request backpay for all weeks during the call - make sure they process it while you're on the phone. The system is overwhelmed but persistence pays off! Good luck!

Thank you for this detailed breakdown. I'll be trying all of these steps. Did you ever figure out what was causing your delay?

Turned out my former employer had contested the claim saying I quit (I didn't). Then there was an identity verification flag that nobody bothered to tell me about. Just needed someone to actually look at my account.

Which office did you go to? I didn't know you could just show up in person.

I went to the career center in brooklyn. They have DOL staff there certain days. Check the website for locations and times.

This doesn't work anymore, I tried last month and they told me everything is by phone appointment only now. Got turned away at the door.

Check your spam folder!!!! I was waiting 4 months and turns out they sent me an email asking for additional documentation that went to spam. Once I provided it, got paid in 2 weeks.

After tryng to reach NY unemployment for weeks with no luck, a friend told me about Claimyr and it was a game-changer. They waited on hold for me (took about 90 mins) then called when they got someone. The agent fixed my claim in 15 minutes and I got all my backpay the next week. Just go to claimyr.com - cannot recommend enough!

Lol I'm not paid, just a real person who was desperate after 2 months of no benefits. Believe what you want, but I'm just trying to help others who are stuck like I was.

I used it too after seeing it recommended here. Got through in about an hour. Way better than the 200+ calls I made myself with no luck.

u might have answered one of the weekly certification questions wrong. they never tell u when u do this, just put ur claim on hold forever. common mistakes: saying ur not ready to work, saying u turned down a job, or reporting even a tiny bit of income incorrectly. one wrong answer = purgatory

Quinn Herbert

Is there any way to check or fix this without talking to a person? I'm pretty sure I answered everything correctly.

nope, thats the catch-22. u need to talk to someone to find out what the problem is but u cant get through to anyone to ask. its a messed up system

The labor department is still catching up from the Covid backlog. Some claims are taking 4-6 months to process. It's absolutely ridiculous but unfortunately normal these days.

KEEP CALLING!!! It took me 437 calls over 3 weeks but I finally got through. The system is designed to wear you down so you'll give up. Don't let them win!!

Did you check if your identity has been verified in the system? A lot of claims are stuck in ID verification hell right now. If you log in and see a message about ID verification, you need to upload documents through ID.me or their system.

0 coins

-

Quinn Herbert

I don't see anything about ID verification in my account. Just a pending status with no explanation.

Make sure youre not accidentally locked out of your account. I thought I was logged in correctly for WEEKS but turns out my account was locked and thats why my claim wasnt moving. Had to call to unlock it.
