Filed for NY unemployment in October - stuck in limbo with no answers

I submitted my unemployment claim back on 10/15/2022 and I'm still waiting to receive ANY payment. Got my monetary determination letter about 3 weeks after filing, which seemed like a good sign, but now I'm just stuck. I've managed to get through to someone on the phone a few times (miracle), but all they tell me is either "your claim is still fairly new" or "there's an issue that needs to be resolved" without any details. I call every week and keep getting the same vague answers. It's been almost 3 months now! I've certified every single week without fail. Anyone else stuck in this weird limbo? I'm starting to think they're just hoping I'll give up and go away. My savings are almost gone at this point.

Welcome to the nightmare that is ny unemployment! I was stuck for 4 months with the same runaround. "we're working on it" or "there's an issue we need to resolve" but nobody could tell me what the actual issue WAS. It's like they're trained to say nothing helpful.

4 months? omg i cant wait that long. did u ever figure out what the issue was?

Turns out they needed employment verification from my old job who never responded to them. But nobody bothered to TELL ME this until month 3 when I finally got a competent agent.

that's ridiculous! did u have to do anything to fix it or did they finally just figure it out themselves?

I had to contact my old employer's HR dept myself and basically beg them to respond to the unemployment office. Then waited another 3 weeks. System is broken af.

I was in the exact same situation last year! After weeks of getting nowhere with the phone system, I tried this callback service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me through to an actual agent who could see exactly what was holding up my claim! Talking to that agent got my $ unlocked so fast after months of waiting. This sounds like an ad. Does this actually work or is it just another scam trying to prey on desperate people? 🤔

Not an ad, just someone who was desperate after not getting benefits for 11 weeks. It literally got me connected to a real person who fixed my claim that day. Best decision I made during that whole unemployment mess.

hmm i've seen this mentioned before. did it actually work for you? I'm going on 7 weeks of nothing here

100% worked. After 2 months of trying to call myself, I was at my wits end. Used Claimyr and talked to someone within an hour who actually gave me real answers about my claim status.

I've been burned by so many 'solutions' before... what makes this any different from the other ways people claim will get you through?

The difference is it ACTUALLY gets you a callback with a real agent. Not a bot, not a tier 1 rep, but someone who can actually help. I was skeptical too until my backpay hit my account 3 days after using it.

You need to call right when they open at 8am. That's the only way I got through after 2 months of the same crap. Turns out they never processed my ID verification which was causing the hold up. Nobody bothered to tell me that.

I have the EXACT solution for this. I went through it too and it's because theres probably an ID verification or wage verification issue. Your employer mightve disputed something or they couldnt match your records. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, stop calling that main number. You'll never get anywhere. Instead, use Claimyr.com to get you connected to an agent who can actually see your file and tell you what's wrong. It's the only way I finally got answers. 2. When you talk to them, specifically ask if there's an "outstanding issue code" on your account. Make them tell you the code and what it means. 3. Ask them to escalate your case to a specialist if they can't resolve it themselves. 4. If they say "we'll call you back," don't believe it. Keep calling using the service I mentioned above until it's resolved. 5. Submit EVERY document they might possibly need through the online portal - ID, birth certificate, social security card, previous W2s. Sometimes they're missing something but won't tell you. This system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. Don't let them win! I finally got all my backpay (over $6000) after 4 months of fighting.

thank you sooo much for this detailed response!!! did u actually get backpay for all the weeks you were waiting?

Yes! I got every single penny owed to me, but ONLY after I got through to someone who could actually fix the issues. Once resolved, the backpay came about 4 days later.

This is actually good advice. That claimyr site really does work... I was skeptical but it got me through after 3 months of hell with NY unemployment.

its so crazy how they put us through this. like we already lost our jobs and now we have to fight for weeks/months to get the money we're entitled to?? the system is designed to make us give up.

100% it is. They're hoping people just go away or find other work before they have to pay out. Been saying this for years 💯

It's all because of the massive fraud during covid. They're treating everyone like criminals now instead of people who need help.

heres the secret: email your state senator or assembly member. I was stuck for TWO MONTHS with the exact same runaround you're getting. Emailed my state assemblyman's office and miraculously my claim was processed within a week. They have special contacts at unemployment that can actually get stuff done.

THIS!!! Worked for me too. They have special access to NYSDOL that regular people don't get.

How do you even figure out who your state senator is? Anyone have a link?

just google "find my NY state representatives" and put in your address. Then look for a "constituent services" contact on their website.

This happened to me and I found out it was because someone else tried filing using my info (identity theft). Took 5 MONTHS to resolve. Check your credit reports ASAP just to make sure.

When was your last job? If you haven't worked in the past 18 months, you might not qualify for a new claim. Or if you worked in another state, that can cause problems too.

0 coins

-

Theodore Nelson

No, I was at the same job in NY for 3 years until September 2022, so that shouldn't be the issue.

i just weant through this nightmare. turns out they had the wrong bank info on file and nobody botherd to tell me. ffs you'd think they'd send an email or something. i finally got through by using claimyr.com. you pay a fee but it was worth it to actually talk to a real person who fixed it in 5 minutes 🤦‍♂️

the problem is that they are OVERWHELMED and understaffed. I know its frustrating but just keep trying. Took me 11 weeks to get my first payment but I eventually got all the back pay. hang in there.

Understaffed is no excuse for this level of dysfunction. Most other states do way better.

NY unemployment is completely broken. I gave up after 2 months and just found another job. Not worth the stress and anxiety of dealing with them every day. Sorry ur going through this man.

Ask them SPECIFICALLY what the issue code is on your account. Don't let them get away with vague answers. Write down the names of everyone you talk to. Ask to speak to a tier 2 agent or supervisor. Be polite but FIRM. They try to get you off the phone as fast as possible.

mine was stuck becuse they needed to verify my identity. they never told me this until I talked to like the 20th agent. check your online account and see if theres a message or document request you missed.

-

Theodore Nelson

I check my online account multiple times a day and there are no message or document requests. That's what makes this so frustrating!

Question: have you been able to file weekly claims even though you're not getting paid? Sometimes that's a sign that there's just a payment method issue rather than an eligibility issue.

0 coins

-

Theodore Nelson

Yes, I've been able to certify every week without any problems. The system accepts my weekly claims but no money ever comes through.

0 coins

Amelia Martinez

That's actually a good sign! Means your claim is probably valid and there's just some technical issue holding up payment. When I went through this, it was because they had my bank account number wrong.
