NY unemployment rep says I need to wait 10 weeks to be priority? Only at week 8!
So frustrated with this whole process. I lost my job in a retail downsizing back in February and applied for unemployment right away. My claim has been pending for 8 weeks now. Every week I certify and get absolutely nothing - not even a determination letter. Today I finally managed to get through to someone on the phone after trying non-stop for days. The lady I spoke with checked my file and just casually told me that I'm not considered "priority" until I hit 10 weeks of waiting! I thought 8 weeks was already ridiculous, but apparently that's not long enough for them to actually help me? My savings are almost gone and my rent is due next week. How can they expect people to survive for 2.5 months with no income while they take their sweet time processing claims? Has anyone else been told they need to wait 10 weeks before they're considered priority? This seems insane to me.

Same boat! Im on week 9 and they told me the exact same thing. Something bout a "10 week threshold" for priority claims. The system is totally broken. I finally got thrugh using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and the agent basically confirmed I just gotta wait another week. Best money I ever spent just to get a straight answer finally. Check out their youtube video if youre interested https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•is this for real? never heard of this before. does it actually work or is this some kinda scam thing?

•Yeah its 100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after like 300 calls that went nowhere. They just call for you, wait on hold, then connect you when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of frustration

•wait hold up - does this actually help or are we still stuck waiting for the 10 weeks? like did they do anything to speed it up for you?

•They can't speed up the 10 week thing sadly, but at least I got confirmation that my claim was actually in the system and not lost somewhere. And I didn't waste a whole day on hold just to find that out 🤷♂️

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

•They don't claim to fix the system, just help you reach an actual person. Big difference. Try being on week 9 with no income and see how picky you are about getting help 😤

This is sadly true. I waited 12 weeks before my claim was finally processed. The whole 10 weeks priority thing is real and it's completely ridiculous. They're basically forcing people into desperate situations while they take thier time. If you have the option, try contacting your local state representatives office - that's what finally helped me.

I hate to be that person but... yea, 10 weeks seems to be their new "standard" 🙄 I went through this a few months ago and was told the exact same thing. It's insane how they expect ppl to survive with no income for that long. The worst part is that different reps tell you different things, so half the time you don't even know what's true anymore.

•it's absolutely ridiculous! did your claim eventually go through after 10 weeks? or did you have to wait even longer?

•Mine went through at exactly 10 weeks and 3 days. Like literally the day after I hit the 10 week mark, suddenly everything was resolved. I think they really do have some kind of automatic flagging system for claims that hit 10 weeks.

LISTEN UP EVERYONE - I've been through this whole mess and have some actual advice that might help. The NY unemployment system is completely overwhelmed and their "10 week priority" system is unfortunately very real. Here's what you need to know: First, don't just wait passively. Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every conversation, names of reps you speak with. Second, there are several ways to try to speed things up: 1. Contact your state senator or assembly person's office. They have direct channels to DOL and can sometimes expedite claims. 2. If you're truly in a financial emergency, emphasize this when you speak to reps. Use phrases like "facing eviction" or "unable to afford medicine" - sometimes this can get you flagged for expedited review. 3. Make sure there are no issues with your claim that you can fix. Verify your ID.me is complete, that all employer information is correct, and that you're answering certification questions correctly. 4. Try using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent faster. It saved me hours of hold time and frustration. When you do get through, ask specifically if there are any issues with your claim that are causing the delay. 5. Request a supervisor when you call. Regular agents often can't actually help with stuck claims. Don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating, but persistence does pay off eventually.

•THIS!!!! 💯 The state senator thing is what worked for me. My case was stuck for 11 weeks, called my senator's office and had payment within 4 days.

•Can confirm the Claimyr thing works too. Used it last month when I couldn't get through. At least then I could get answers about why my claim was delayed.

•Thank you for this detailed advice! I've been documenting everything but haven't tried contacting my state rep yet. Will definitely try that next.

wtf, 10 weeks?! i swear they just make up these arbitrary waiting periods to wear people down. when i filed back in november it was 8 weeks to be "priority" and now its 10?? the system is designed to make people give up fr

•I heard from my friend who works in a state office (not unemployment) that they're severely understaffed and keep changing the timeframes because they can't keep up. Not defending them at all but that's apparently what's happening behind the scenes.

have you tried calling really early in the morning? like right when they open? that's how i finally got through and they told me there was an issue with my identity verification that was holding everything up. nobody had bothered to tell me and i'd been waiting for 7 weeks! might be worth trying again and asking if there's a specific hold on your claim.

•I've tried calling at different times but not right when they open. What time do they start taking calls? Maybe there's something specific holding up my claim too.

•They open at 8am but I start calling at 7:58 and just keep redialing. Usually get through within 15 mins that way. Definitely ask them to look for specific holds or flags on your account!

This 10 week rule is such BS! I waited 12 weeks last year and was told the same thing. When I asked why they don't tell people this upfront they just said "policy" 🤡 NY unemployment is a joke honestly

Check if there's a hold on your account for something specific. Mine was stuck for similar reasons and when I finally got through they told me my former employer had contested my claim. Once I provided the documents they needed it got resolved faster. The 10 week thing is their standard line but sometimes there are specific issues they can fix.

when did you apply? if you applied in february and its april now, that should be more than 8 weeks already... are you sure youre counting correctly? not being mean just trying to help

•I applied on February 24th so I just started week 8. I guess they count it from the day you apply?

•yeah they count from application date. hang in there - only 2 more weeks to go before you hit their magic number 🙄

Email your state assembly person!!! I cannot stress this enough! I was in your exact situation and nothing worked until I reached out to my assembly member. Had my benefits within 5 days after their office contacted DOL on my behalf. Don't wait for the 10 week nonsense.

•100% this!! State reps have special contacts at unemployment. They can work magic sometimes.

•Thanks for this tip! How do I find out who my assembly person is?

•Just google "find my NY state assembly member" and there's a lookup tool where you put in your address. Email is usually better than calling them.

they're lying to you. there's no official "10 week rule" - it's just what they tell people to get them off the phone. my claim was stuck for 6 weeks until i spoke to a supervisor who fixed it in 5 minutes. always ask for a supervisor!

Malik Thomas
•This! The regular agents often don't have the authority or knowledge to fix certain issues. Always escalate to a supervisor.

•When I called today they refused to let me speak to a supervisor. Said supervisors don't take calls directly. Is there a trick to getting transferred?
0 coins
Emma Wilson
•You gotta be firm but polite. Say something like "I understand that's the policy, but my situation is urgent and I'm requesting an exception to speak with a supervisor about my specific case." If they still refuse, say you'll call back later and try again with a different agent. Some are more helpful than others.

I know this isnt what you want to hear but yes, the 10 week thing is real. I was in ur exact situation in January. Waited the full 10 weeks and magically my claim was processed the day after. Its their way of managing the backlog - they just prioritize the oldest claims first. Total garbage system but sadly thats how it works now.

I wonder if they're telling people different things in different regions? I'm in Buffalo and was told 8 weeks priority not 10. Maybe it depends on which office is handling your claim? The whole system is messed up either way.

•I'm in Rochester and was told 10 weeks, so maybe it is regional? Or they just keep changing it based on how backlogged they are.

•I'm in NYC so maybe that's why mine is 10 weeks? The backlog here must be insane.

Can't believe they're still pulling this crap. The waiting time just keeps getting longer and longer. I remember back in 2020 they were saying 3-4 weeks was the max anyone should wait. Then it was 6 weeks. Now 10?? Next year it'll be 15 weeks at this rate 🙄

Pro tip: call your local congressional office AND state assembly person. I was stuck for 9 weeks, called both offices, and within 3 days my claim was processing. They have special contacts within DOL that can actually get things done. Don't just wait for the 10 week mark!

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Stay strong and keep pushing. I waited 11 weeks total before mine was approved last year. The second you hit that 10 week mark, call EVERY single day and remind them you're now a "priority" case. Be polite but persistent.
