Applied 11 weeks ago for NY unemployment - claim still pending with zero updates
I filed for unemployment almost 3 months ago after being laid off from my retail job. Been claiming weekly for 10 weeks straight now and my status is STILL showing as 'processing.' The website said it should take 2-4 weeks to process claims! I've only had this one job for the entire year, my employer already confirmed the layoff, so what's the holdup? I've tried calling about 30 times but can't get through to an actual person. I'm completely on my own financially - no family support, and my savings are basically gone at this point. I'm stressed out about paying rent next month. Is everyone dealing with these crazy delays or is something wrong with my specific claim?

Youre definitely not alone. I waited almost 13 weeks for mine to process. The system is completey overloaded right now. Keep certifying every week even if you havent been approved yet - they'll backpay you once approved.

•13 weeks?! That's just insane. Did you end up having to do anything special to finally get it processed?

•I tried everything - emails, calling like crazy. What finally worked was getting thru to an actual person who fixed whatever was holding it up in 5 minutes. The most ridiculous part.

•How did you finally get through to someone? I swear I've tried calling 100 times at this point 😫

•After weeks of trying, I used this service called Claimyr.com - they call and wait on hold then connect you when a agent picks up. Worth every penny bc I got all my backpay like 3 days later.

•It's real. I was skeptical at first but you're just paying them to do the hold time for you. Once I finally talked to someone my issue was fixed in minutes and my money came soon after: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I finally broke through the NY unemployment purgatory after 7 weeks using claimyr.com - it calls and waits on hold FOR YOU then connects when a live person answers. Talking to an actual agent got my backpay released within days! Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this actually legit? I've been burned by so many fake 'solutions' since this whole nightmare started 🤔

•100% legit. I was desperate after trying for weeks. They just do the hold time for you - honestly saved my sanity and my bank account.

•It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. After weeks of trying myself and getting nowhere, having someone finally fix my claim was priceless.

•Think what you want, but when you've been waiting 10+ weeks for money you're owed and can't pay rent, you'll try anything. This actually worked for me when nothing else did.

The DoL is a complete joke right now. Same boat - waited 12 weeks with zero communication, then suddenly got all my payments at once last thursday. No explanation, no notice, nothing. Keep certifying weekly and document EVERYTHING.

Have you checked your account messages or email? Sometimes they send requests for additional information but don't make it obvious. If they need something and don't get it, your claim just sits there.

•I check every single day and there's nothing - no emails, no messages in the system, nothing in my spam folder. It's like my claim just disappeared into the void.

•Have you tried logging in during non-peak hours? Sometimes the message center doesnt load properly when the server is busy. Try like 6am or midnight.

This is my COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE to getting your ny unemployment claim unstuck after dealing with this for months: First, keep certifying every single week no matter what - you'll get backpay for all weeks properly certified once approved. Next, you need to actually TALK to someone. The phone system is designed to prevent this. Your options: 1) Call exactly at 8:00:00 am when they open (set an alarm for 7:59) 2) Try the alternate numbers: many people have luck with the TCC line or fraud department who can transfer you 3) Email unemployment.nysdol@labor.ny.gov with your FULL name, last 4 of SSN, and phone number in EVERY email 4) Contact your state assemblyperson's office - they have special contacts 5) If desperate, use claimyr.com - they wait on hold for you then call when an agent picks up. This is what finally worked for me after 9 weeks of nothing. When you finally reach someone, be polite but firm. Ask specifically: "What is the exact status of my claim and what is causing the delay?" Get the agent's name and ID if possible. Don't give up - the system is overwhelmed but persistence pays off!

•Thank you for this detailed breakdown!! I'm going to try all of these approaches. Did you have to provide any additional documents once you got through?

•In my case they needed proof of employment for a job I had 18 months ago that wasn't even part of my current claim. The system is weird like that. Just have all your W2s, paystubs etc ready when you call.

what's ur claim status show when u log in? if it says 'pending' thats different from 'processing' - pending usually means there's an identity verification issue.

Klaus Schmidt
•It says 'processing - claim benefits in review' and has said that since week 2. No change at all.

Have u tried Twitter? Seriously. Tweet @NYSLabor with your issue (no personal info) and they sometimes respond and help. Worked for my roomate after 5 weeks of nothing.

I had same issue last month! Turned out they had my SSN wrong by ONE digit. Check all your info is 100% correct. One tiny error can hold everything up.

•How did you figure out that was the problem? Did they tell you or did you spot it?

•I finally got thru to a person who checked my file and spotted it. I had no way of knowing myself until they told me.

•This is what drives me crazy - we could have simple issues but no way to know without talking to a human!!

CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR'S OFFICE!! They have special channels to DOL. My claim was stuck for 6 weeks, called my senator, and magically my claim was fixed 3 days later. Better than waiting on the regular line.

ppl out here acting like 8-9 weeks is a long time 😂 I waited TWENTY THREE WEEKS for my claim to process. The system is beyond broken.

•23 weeks?!? How did you survive financially for that long without benefits???

Try calling right when they open or right before they close. Those are the best times to get through. Also, if you press 7-3-1-9 after the main menu sometimes it gets you to a diff department who can transfer you.

THE TRICK that worked for me: tell them you think your identity might have been stolen. They transfer you to fraud dept IMMEDIATELY and those guys can actually fix your claim. I waited 7 weeks, did this, got paid the next day.

•Isn't that technically lying though? Could that cause more problems?

Natasha Petrov
•Not really. You're not filing a fraud claim, you're just saying you're concerned because you haven't heard anything in 2+ months which is reasonable.

whatever u do DON'T stop certifying weekly. my cousin gave up after no response for weeks and then had to start the whole process over again when he finally got through.

Check your spam folder everyday!! I missed an ID verification email and it delayed my claim by 2 months. They sent it from a weird email that looked like spam.

I stumbled upon a 3rd party service that gets you through to unemployment agents - they basically wait on hold for you at claimyr.com. I was skeptical but talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after waiting 9 weeks on my own. Worth checking out if you're desperate.

•lol believe what you want. when you've been waiting months for money with bills piling up, you'll be willing to try anything that works. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent.

•can you explain how it actually works tho? like do they just conference you in or what

•they have automated systems that dial and navigate the phone menus, then wait on hold. when an actual human picks up, they call your phone and connect you. saves hours of hold time.

Did you work out of state at all in the last 18 months? That can cause major delays because they have to verify with other states.

Klaus Schmidt
•Nope, just one job here in NY for the past 2 years.

the person who said contact your state rep is RIGHT. My brothers claim was stuck for 11 weeks. One email from our assembly member's office and it was fixed in 48 hours.
