How long is NY unemployment claim review? Mine's been pending for a month
I got laid off from my retail management position about six weeks ago when the store closed. Filed for unemployment benefits right away in early February. My claim has been stuck in 'review status' for almost 4 weeks now and I'm starting to worry. I call every day but can't get through to anyone - just the automated message saying my claim is still under review. The website doesn't give any additional info. I've sent emails through the messaging system but only get generic responses saying 'be patient'. My savings are almost gone and rent is due next week. Has anyone experienced a similar delay? Is this normal for new claims right now? My friend who applied last year got approved within a week, so I'm confused why mine is taking so long.

After struggling to get through on the phone for weeks, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a real agent within an hour! They basically do the calling/waiting on hold for you. They called me when an agent picked up. Talking to an actual person got my claim moving and I had money in my account 2 days later. Best decision I made after wasting so much time on hold! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•They use some kinda system that keeps redialing until someone answers. Then they connect you. For me it took about 40 mins but I've heard ppl say it sometimes takes a few hours depending on call volume. Way better than doing it yourself tho!

•I actually used it last month when my claim got frozen for 'verification'. Worked exactly like they said. Got a real person who fixed my issue in 10 minutes 💯

The review period is all over the place these dyas. My sister waited 3 weeks, my neighbor waited 6 weeks, and I waited 10 DAYS. Makes zero sense how they process these things. The NY unemployment system needs a serious overall.

I've been working with the NY unemployment system for over 10 years and can provide some insights on what's happening with your claim. First, the 4-week review period is unfortunately becoming more common. The department is dealing with staffing shortages and an increase in fraud prevention measures, which slows down processing. Some things you can do: - Keep detailed records of all your attempts to contact them - Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM Monday morning - Contact your state representative's office - they often have direct channels - Make sure you're continuing to certify weekly even while waiting - Check if there's a specific document they need but failed to request If you need to speak with someone urgently (which I recommend), many people have had success using claimyr.com to get through the phone system. It's designed specifically to navigate the hold times and connect you with an agent. Hang in there - most claims do eventually get processed, but the system is frustrating by design.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I've been certifying weekly, but I didn't think about contacting my state rep. Will definitely try that!

•Can confirm about the state rep thing - my brother's claim was stuck for 7 weeks until he contacted his assembly person. Fixed in 3 days after that.

mine took 7 weeks and then they denied me for no reason. had to appeal. finally got it sorted but took 3 months total. NY unemployment is a complete joke.

•Oh no, that's awful! Did they give any reason for the denial?

Has anyone had any luck getting through on the phone? I've tried calling over 50 times and can never get past the automated system.

This is the new normal. The system is overloaded and they're short staffed. My claim took 6 weeks to process last August and my coworker's took 5 weeks in december. Keep certifying every week while you wait!

•Good tip! Just checked and there's nothing there besides the generic 'claim received' message. I'll keep checking daily though.

my cousin works for NY unemployment (not in claims tho) and she said theyre still dealing with a HUGE backlog plus all the new fraud prevention stuff slows things down. 4-6 weeks is the new normal sadly

it varies a lot, but 4-6 weeks seems standard now. mine took 5 weeks and my roomate's took 3. if you can get through on the phone you might be able to speed it up

If you're still waiting after 4 weeks, there might be something flagged on your account. Did you work out of state at all in the last 18 months? That can cause delays. Also check if your former employer is contesting the claim - that's another common holdup.

Anastasia Popov
•I haven't worked out of state, but I hadn't considered my employer might be contesting it. How would I find that out?

•you'd need to get someone on the phone. they won't tell you that info through the message system usually. try claimyr.com - worked for me when i was in a similar situation.

Took 7 weeks for me. Keep certifying every week while u wait so u get backpay for all those weeks once approved. The system is overwhelmed right now.

anyone notice how NY unemployment is somehow WORSE now than during the pandemic? how is that even possible? they had way more claims then and somehow did better lol

•they got extra federal funding back then. now they're back to normal state budgets which means understaffed and overworked

Call, call, call! Don't just wait. You need to be proactive. My claim was stuck for 5 weeks until I finally got through to someone who told me they were missing ONE document that they never told me they needed. Fixed in 2 days after that.

There's a weird glitch in the system right now where some claims are getting stuck in review. My husband and I both filed on the same day (we worked at the same company), his went through in 10 days and mine took 6 weeks. No explanation for the difference.

Four weeks is becoming standard due to increased fraud prevention measures. If you want to expedite things, try these steps: 1. Call at 7:55am - right before they open 2. Try the callback feature on their website (though it's hit or miss) 3. Contact your state assembly person or senator's office 4. Make sure you're checking your online account for document requests 5. Continue certifying weekly If you're desperate to get through on the phone quickly, I had success using claimyr.com - they kept calling until they got through and then connected me with an agent. Saved my sanity after trying for weeks.

the whole system is FUBAR right now. my claim sat in limbo for 6 weeks then was randomly approved with no explanation. keep certifying every week while you wait so you don't miss out on payments.
