NY unemployment stopped payments - can I get them restarted after months of job hunting?

I was receiving NY unemployment for about 4 months after I got laid off from my job in healthcare. Then in February they suddenly stopped my payments without any explanation. I've been applying for jobs consistently since then - had about 12 interviews but no offers yet. It's now been almost 3 months without any income and I'm falling behind on rent and utilities. I've tried calling the unemployment office about 20 times but can never get through to a human. The website just shows my claim is 'pending' with no other info. Anyone know if it's possible to get my payments restarted? Or if I need to file a completely new claim? I've documented all my job applications (over 70 at this point) and I'm seriously struggling financially.

If your claim was active but payments stopped, you don't need to file a new claim usually. Sounds like you got flagged for some kind of review. Only way to fix it is to talk to a real person at NY unemployment. The system is completely broken and designed to frustrate you into giving up 😑

thats what I was afraid of... any tips on how to actually get someone on the phone? I've been trying for months

its literally IMPOSSIBLE to reach them by normal methods. i spent 3 weeks trying every single day

Yeah they make it nearly impossible. Set aside a whole day, call right when they open (like literally start dialing at 7:59), and keep redialing. It took me 67 attempts once to get through.

After trying for weeks to get through the regular phone lines I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent! Talking to a human got my payments unfrozen within 48 hours. Best money I've spent considering how much was stuck in limbo. Check out this demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds like one of those sketchy ads that pop up everywhere. Did it actually work or just take your money? 🤔

I was super skeptical too but it worked exactly as advertised. They just automate the calling/holding part and then connect you when they get a person. Saved me from literally being evicted since I got 2 months of backpay.

wait this is a real thing? what exactly do they do?

They basically call NYSDOL for you and stay on hold (sometimes for hours) then when a human picks up, they connect that person to your phone. Saved me from having to sit on hold all day.

In my experience, when payments suddenly stop, it's usually because of one of these reasons: 1. You missed a weekly certification 2. They're doing an identity verification (this is common) 3. You reported something that flagged your account 4. They're reviewing your work search activities You NEED to talk to someone. The website is useless for resolving these issues. Keep calling and try different times of day.

Same thing happened to me last summer! Turns out they flagged my account for "identity verification" but NEVER TOLD ME. I only found out after finally getting through to someone. Such a broken system 🤮

Did you have to submit additional documents when that happened? And how long did it take to resolve once you talked to someone?

Yeah had to upload my ID, SS card, and a utility bill through their portal. After I talked to someone and submitted those docs it took about 10 days to start getting paid again + all my backpay.

Have you checked your mail/email? Sometimes they send requests for additional info and if you miss responding to those letters they'll cut you off. Check your spam folder too!

I've been checking everything religiously. Nothing in mail or email (including spam). Thats why its so frustrating - no explanation at all!

THIS IS HOW TO FIX YOUR ISSUE (coming from someone who works adjacent to the system): What you're experiencing is extremely common. When payments stop suddenly with no explanation, it's almost always because your claim got flagged for manual review. This happens randomly, but also if any information looks inconsistent or if employer info doesn't match perfectly. The ONLY way to resolve this is to speak directly with a claims specialist (not just a front-line rep). Here's what you need to do: 1. Do NOT file a new claim - this will only complicate things and potentially create a duplicate issue 2. Keep certifying every week even though you're not getting paid - this creates a record that will allow for backpay 3. Getting through on the phone is nearly impossible through normal methods. I've seen clients have success with claimyr.com which automates the calling process and connects you when they reach a human 4. When you do get through, specifically ask for a "claims specialist" and say your payments stopped without notification and you need a "claim review" 5. Have all your job search records ready to provide if asked The NY unemployment system is deliberately understaffed and difficult to navigate. Keep pushing and documenting everything. You're entitled to these benefits if you qualify!

Thank you so much for this detailed answer! This is incredibly helpful. I'm going to try claimyr.com today since I've wasted so much time already.

Can confirm this works. Was in almost exact situation and using a calling service got me through to a claims specialist who fixed everything in one call.

try reaching out to your state rep! I emailed mine after 2 months of no payment and magically got a call from unemployment 3 days later. they have special channels to escalate cases.

the ny unemployment system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so people give up. they save millions by making it hard to get ur rightful benefits. don't give up!!

this is 100% true. I worked for a state agency (not NY) and we were literally trained on how to get people off the phone without resolving issues. It's disgusting.

yup it's all about metrics. if they can show lower unemployment numbers by just making it impossible to collect, they look better politically 🤡

I lost 4 months of benefits before i could finally get through. Kept all my job search records and they eventually paid me everything they owed. DONT STOP CERTIFYING WEEKLY even if you're not getting paid!!

call at exactly 7:30 AM when the system first opens. thats the only time ive ever gotten through without waiting 3+ hours

This doesn't work anymore. I tried this strategy for weeks and still couldn't get through. Too many people know this trick now.

Have you tried submitting a message through their contact portal? Sometimes that works better than calling. But u still need to follow up like crazy.

-

Sofia Rodriguez

Yep, sent 4 messages over the past 2 months. Got one automated response saying 'your message has been received' and nothing else.

My payments suddenly stopped last november...found out someone had filed a fraudulent claim using my info in another state! check if that could be happening

Got a random letter from Ohio unemployment (I live in NY) about my "claim" there. Had to file police reports and everything. What a nightmare.

Contrary to what everyone is saying, I actually got through on the phone by calling the unemployment office for a DIFFERENT state first, then asking them to transfer me to NY. Somehow that bypassed the main queue. Worth a try! 🤷‍♀️

ur gonna laugh but try sending them a fax. seriously. the old school methods sometimes work better cuz nobody uses them anymore. my brother got his issue fixed in a week after faxing them a letter about his situation

I've been in your exact situation. It's so frustrating! I gave up on calling after 3 weeks of failed attempts and used claimyr.com instead. Worth every penny when I got my $6,400 in backpay unfrozen. Don't give up - they're counting on you to just walk away from money that's rightfully yours.

Was the backpay automatic once you resolved the issue?

Yep! Once they fixed whatever the flag was on my account, all the weeks I had been certifying for showed up as paid about 3 days later. Such a relief.
