NY unemployment claim stuck in limbo since February - already approved but no payments
I filed for NY unemployment back in February 2023 and have been in this ridiculous waiting game for over 4 months now. I've been certifying faithfully every single week like clockwork. I even received my approval letter within the first two weeks after filing! But guess what? Not a single payment has hit my account. I've been calling constantly - sometimes 15-20 times per week. Every time I manage to get through, I hear the same useless response: "We've escalated your case to priority status." They told me that back in April, and here we are in June with absolutely nothing to show for it. The last rep I spoke with just said there's literally nothing more they can do except wait for some special agent to review my case and call me. I've done everything right on my end. I've submitted all requested documents, responded to every message, certified weekly without fail. I'm at my wits end with this system. Has anyone else been trapped in this approved-but-not-paid purgatory for this long? Any suggestions on how to actually get someone to process my payments?

I waited for 6 months. Eventually I found out my claim was labeled as 'pending further review' even though I'd been approved. The system is completely broken. Keep calling and ask specifically about any flags or holds on your account.

•Thanks for the tip, i'll definitely ask about flags next time I call. 6 months is insane tho 😖

•For real, sometimes you gotta call and ask specific questions or they won't tell you whats actually wrong. I had a hold because of "verification issues" that no one mentioned for 3 months 🙄

After fighting with ny unemployment for almost 3 months, I finally found a solution! I used this service called claimyr.com that actually got me connected to a real agent within 30 minutes. I was so desperate after trying to call 50+ times myself. Talking to an actual human got my claim processed and the money was in my account 4 days later. Best decision I ever made considering how much backpay I was owed! Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•this sounds like a scam tbh. does it actually work or just take your money?

Mila Walker
•Not a scam at all! It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you when a real person picks up. I was skeptical too but was desperate after months of trying. Worked exactly as advertised.

•wait so you paid money... to call unemployment... when calling is free? 🤨

•Yeah but have you tried calling lately? It's impossible to get through. I spent 3 weeks calling hundreds of times and either getting busy signals or disconnected after waiting 2+ hours. The service waits on hold FOR you and only connects when there's an actual human. Was worth every penny when I got my $8000 backpay finally released.

•I actually tried this too after seeing it mentioned here. Got connected to someone in about 25 mins when I had been trying for weeks on my own. My issue was fixed that same day.

Try contacting your state representatives office!! That's what finally worked for me after 3 months of hell. I emailed my assemblyman with all my info and they had someone from ny unemployment call me within 48 hours. Good luck!

You need to check if your claim has a hold on it for identity verification. Happened to me and no one bothered to tell me for MONTHS until I finally reached an agent who actually knew what they were talking about. The system is a complete joke.

•Same thing happened to my cousin! The hold was because his previous employer contested it but NYSDOL never sent him the notice about it. Such a broken system

•How do I check for a hold? Do I need to talk to a specific department?

•You have to talk to an actual claims specialist, not just the first line customer service people. When you call, specifically ask if there are any holds or flags on your account and why. They might try to brush you off with "it's still processing" but don't accept that answer.

Listen carefully... the ONLY thing that worked for me was calling EXACTLY at 8:00:00 am. Not 8:01, not 7:59. Exactly when they open. I got through first try after suffering for months trying random times during the day. Also, Monday and Tuesday are the worst days to call - try Thursday afternoon if morning doesn't work.

•I'll definitely try this tomorrow morning. Do you call the regular number or is there a better direct line?

•I used the main claims number. Just have it pre-dialed and hit send EXACTLY at 8:00am. Good luck!

Honestly, the whole NY unemployment system is FUBAR. I literally had to contact my state senator's office after 5 months of nothing. Miraculously, got paid 2 weeks after they intervened. The system is designed to make people give up.

•This 100%. They count on people giving up. Saw a report that said NY has billions in unclaimed unemployment benefits because people get frustrated with the process.

•not just ny unemployment, its every state. the systems were built in the 1980s and they neva bothered to upgrade em 💀

I'm going through something similar right now - on week 11 of waiting. The most frustrating part is getting different answers from every person I talk to. One says "just keep waiting" another says "there's a problem that needs to be fixed" and another says "everything looks fine on our end" 🤬

Check your spam folder for emails from them!!! I was waiting for 3 months and then found out they had been sending me requests for additional documentation that were going straight to spam. By the time I found them it was too late and I had to start my claim over.

•Just checked - nothing in spam from them. I've been watching my email like a hawk.

Here's what you need to do to fix your NY unemployment claim that's stuck in limbo: 1) First, don't just call randomly. The system is overwhelmed and you need a strategic approach. Most people give up after being on hold for hours, which is exactly what they're counting on. 2) Check your online account for any outstanding tasks or messages. Sometimes there are document requests hiding in there that don't generate notifications. 3) Call precisely at 8:00 AM or try late afternoon around 3:30 PM when call volume typically dips slightly. 4) When you do get through, ask SPECIFICALLY if there are any holds, pending verifications, or employer disputes on your claim. The generic reps won't volunteer this information. 5) Request to speak with a tier 2 specialist or claims examiner - the frontline reps often can't actually fix problems. 6) If all else fails, I strongly recommend using Claimyr.com - it's a service that navigates the phone system and waits on hold for you, then connects you with an agent. I was stuck for 3 months before using it, and had my issue resolved in one call. 7) As a last resort, contact your state representative or assemblyperson. They have dedicated contacts at NYSDOL who can expedite claims. The key thing to understand is that many claims get stuck in automated verification loops, and only manual intervention by the right person can fix it. Don't give up - persistence is unfortunately necessary in this broken system.

•Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown. I'll definitely try the 8am call tomorrow and asking for a tier 2 specialist. If that doesn't work, I'll look into that claimyr service.

Noah Torres
•Can confirm about the tier 2 specialists. Regular reps literally have a script they follow and limited system access. You NEED to get to a claims examiner.

•I used claimyr after seeing it recommended here. Got through to someone after months of trying on my own. They fixed my issue in one call - worth every penny considering how much backpay I was owed.

4 months aint nothin lol. I waited 10 MONTHS for my claim to be processed during covid. The system is designed to make you wait so long you either give up or find a job before they have to pay you.

is your previous employer contesting your claim? that's usually what causes these long delays. my boss tried to say I quit when I was actually laid off, and it took 5 months to resolve.

•I don't think so, but how would I find out? Nobody at unemployment has mentioned anything about this to me.

•You have to specifically ask if there's an employer dispute on your claim. They won't volunteer that info unless you directly ask.

the trick is to select the spanish option when you call, then when someone answers just say you accidentally pressed the wrong option. wait times are way shorter and they all speak english anyway 😉

There's probably a verification problem they never told you about. My MIL had the exact same issue - approved but no payments for 3 months. Turns out they needed a copy of her birth certificate due to some ID verification thing, but they never bothered to tell her. Once she sent it in, payments started two weeks later.

Did u check ur payment history on the website? sometimes the payments are processed but not showing up in ur bank for some reason. worth double checking the online portal

Jacob Lewis
•Yeah I check it obsessively lol. Nothing there - just shows all the weeks I've certified but 0.00 for payment amounts.

This might sound crazy, but try faxing a letter to them explaining your situation. My brother had been waiting for months calling every day with no luck. He sent one fax and got a call back the next day. Sometimes the old school methods work better with these outdated systems.

•I think he used the main office fax: 518-457-9378 but double check that on their website. He just wrote a 1-page letter with his claim ID, contact info, and a brief summary of the situation.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for 15+ years (seasonal worker) and it has NEVER been this bad. The system was totally overwhelmed during covid and they still haven't recovered. Your only hope is to reach a senior agent who can actually fix things.

Have you tried the callback feature on their website? I couldn't get through by phone for weeks, then requested a callback online and actually got one 3 days later. The agent fixed my issue in 10 minutes.

•Wait what callback feature?? I don't see that anywhere on the site

•It's buried in there. Go to your dashboard > Contact Us > Request Callback. But honestly if you can't find it just use claimyr.com - it's basically the same thing but actually works reliably.

i had this EXACT problem. turns out my identity verification failed but they never bothered to tell me! I only found out when i finally got through to a tier 2 agent who actually looked at my file. had to upload my drivers license and ss card again. got paid 2 weeks later.

•How did you specifically ask for a tier 2 agent? Whenever I call I just get whoever answers
0 coins
Daniel Rogers
•You have to be direct. When they first answer, say "I need to speak with a claims specialist or tier 2 agent about a pending claim that's been approved but not paying." If they say they can help you, say "With all due respect, I've been told multiple times my claim is processing but it's been X months. I need someone who can actually see what's blocking my payments."
