PFL claim denied by EDD due to employer wage misunderstanding - need help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my PFL claim. I filed it after my SDI benefits ended, but it got denied. The reason? They said my employer is paying full wages. Thing is, my employer is only paying part of my wages to top up the EDD pay to 100%. I answered 'yes' on the claim form about employer paying wages, but specified 'other'. Now I'm stuck. Anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to get this sorted out?

Ugh, classic EDD mixup. 🙄 Sounds like they misunderstood your partial wage situation. Here's what I'd do: 1. Gather docs showing your employer's partial payments 2. Call EDD and explain the misunderstanding 3. Mention you answered 'yes' but specified 'other' on the form 4. Ask them to correct your claim 5. Request confirmation of changes in writing Good luck! The system's a mess, but hang in there!

Have you tried emailing them? I had luck with PFL@edd.ca.gov. Make sure to include your receipt number and all the details. Might take a few weeks for a response tho.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a shot. Did you follow up with them if you didn't hear back?

•Yeah, I sent a follow-up after 2 weeks. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that jazz. 😉

Man, I feel for you. EDD is such a nightmare to deal with. I've been in the same boat and it took FOREVER to get things straightened out. Hang in there!

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Have you tried reaching out to your HR department? They might be able to help clarify the wage situation with EDD. Worth a shot!

OMG the EDD is such a joke 🤡 I swear they deny claims just for fun sometimes. Keep pushing and don't give up!

•C'mon guys, they're probably just overworked and understaffed. Cut 'em some slack.

Pro tip: keep a detailed log of all your interactions with EDD. Dates, times, who you spoke to, what was said. It'll help if you need to escalate your case later.

•That's smart, I'll start doing that. Thanks!

Anyone know how long it typically takes for EDD to make corrections once you get through to them?

•In my experience, it can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. But I've heard horror stories of it taking months. 😬

•Took 6 weeks for me. The waiting game is the worst part.

Have you considered reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along with EDD.

This is why I always tell ppl to be super careful when filling out those forms. One wrong answer and BAM, denied. The system is rigged I tell ya.

•Totally agree. It's like they're looking for any excuse to deny claims. 🙄

I'm going through something similar right now! The partial wage situation is so confusing on their forms. @Oliver Becker's advice looks solid - I'm definitely going to try calling them with all my documentation ready. It's frustrating how one misunderstood checkbox can derail everything. Has anyone had success getting through to them on the phone lately? I've been trying for days with no luck. 😤

•@Zara Ahmed I feel your pain! 😔 The phone situation is brutal right now. I ve'been trying for over a week myself. @Malik Jackson mentioned that claimyr.com service earlier - might be worth considering if you re desperate'to get through. Also, don t forget'about the email option @Emma Davis suggested PFL@edd.ca.gov . Even (though)it takes longer, at least you get your case documented in writing. Hang in there, we re all in'this together! 💪

Just went through this exact same issue last month! 😤 The partial wage reporting is such a trap on their forms. What worked for me was calling first thing in the morning (around 8:01 AM) and having a letter from my employer ready that specifically outlined: 1) Exact amount they're paying me, 2) That it's supplemental to EDD benefits (not full wages), and 3) The dates this arrangement covers. When I finally got through, the rep was actually pretty helpful once I explained the "other" selection clearly. Also heads up - they might ask you to resubmit some forms, so don't panic if they say that. The whole process took about 3 weeks total but I did get my back pay once it was sorted. Good luck! 🍀

•This is super helpful @Cameron Black! 🙏 The employer letter idea is brilliant - I bet having that documentation spelled out clearly makes all the difference. The 8:01 AM tip is gold too, I'll definitely try that tomorrow morning. It's reassuring to hear you got your back pay eventually, gives me hope that this mess can actually be resolved. Did you have to provide any additional documentation beyond the employer letter, or was that enough to get things moving?

Similar thing happened to me a few months ago! The key is being super specific when you talk to EDD - don't just say "partial wages," explain that your employer is supplementing your benefits to bring you to 100% of your normal pay, not replacing the EDD benefits entirely. I had to submit a wage statement from my employer showing the exact breakdown. Also try calling right when they open at 8 AM - way better chance of getting through. The whole thing took about a month to resolve but I did get all my back payments. Don't give up! 💪

•@Atticus Domingo Thanks for sharing your experience! That s'really helpful to know the specific language to use when explaining the situation. I m'definitely going to try the 8 AM calling strategy - seems like that s'the golden time everyone s'mentioning. A month feels like forever when you re'waiting for benefits, but it s'good to know the back payments do come through eventually. Did your employer provide anything specific in that wage statement that helped clarify things with EDD?

This exact same thing happened to me! 😩 The EDD system is so confusing when it comes to partial wage situations. I made the same mistake - answered 'yes' to employer paying wages but they completely ignored the 'other' specification. What finally worked for me was getting a detailed letter from HR explaining that they're only paying a supplemental amount to top off the EDD benefits, NOT full wages. I also had to call multiple times and specifically ask them to look at the 'other' section of my original claim. It took about 2-3 weeks to get sorted, but I did get all my back pay. Don't give up - the system is broken but persistence pays off! 💪

•@KhalilStar This is exactly what I needed to hear! 🙌 It's so frustrating that they completely ignore the 'other' specification - like why even have that option if they're not going to read it? I'm definitely going to get that detailed HR letter you mentioned. Did you have any specific language or format that worked best for the letter? And when you called, did you have to explain the whole situation from scratch each time or were they able to see notes from previous calls? Thanks for giving me hope that persistence actually works with these people! 😅

I went through this EXACT same situation earlier this year! 😤 The partial wage thing is such a minefield with EDD. Here's what finally worked for me: I called at exactly 8:00 AM (set multiple alarms!) and had my employer provide a letter on company letterhead that specifically stated: "Employee is receiving supplemental wages to bring total compensation to 100% of regular salary, NOT replacement wages for EDD benefits." The key phrase that helped was emphasizing it's "supplemental" not "replacement." I also made sure to reference my original claim where I selected "other" and explained that detail got overlooked. Took about 3 weeks total but I got all my back pay. The rep told me this happens ALL the time because their system flags any "yes" to employer wages without properly reviewing the details. Hang in there - it's fixable! 🤞

•@Kelsey Chin This is incredibly helpful! 🙏 The specific wording about supplemental "vs" replacement "wages" is genius - I bet that distinction makes all the difference to them. I m'definitely going to use that exact language when I get my HR letter. It s'both frustrating and reassuring to know this happens ALL "the time -" like, why haven t'they fixed their system to properly handle the other "option" if it s'such a common issue? 🤦♀️ But at least it means there s'a clear path to resolution. Setting those alarms for 8 AM sharp tomorrow! Thanks for the detailed breakdown, this gives me so much more confidence going into the call.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! 😫 Filed my PFL claim after SDI ended and got denied because they think my employer is paying full wages when they're actually just supplementing to bring me to 100%. I also marked "yes" with "other" but it seems like they completely ignored that part. Reading through all these responses is giving me hope though - sounds like this is a super common problem with their system. I'm going to try the 8 AM calling strategy tomorrow with a detailed HR letter ready. @Oliver Becker @Cameron Black @Kelsey Chin your step-by-step advice is incredibly helpful! It's frustrating that we have to jump through so many hoops for what should be a straightforward situation, but at least there's a clear path forward. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! 🙏

•@Emma Wilson You re'definitely not alone in this! 😤 I m'actually going through something similar right now too. It s'wild how many of us are dealing with the exact same partial "wage misunderstanding issue" - makes you wonder why EDD hasn t'fixed their system yet if it s'happening to so many people! The advice from everyone here has been a lifesaver though. I m'planning to call tomorrow morning at 8 AM sharp with my HR documentation ready. We should definitely update this thread with our progress - might help other folks who run into this same trap! Good luck with your call tomorrow! 🍀

Wow, reading through all these experiences is both frustrating and reassuring! 😅 I'm actually going through a very similar situation right now - my PFL claim got denied for the exact same reason even though I clearly marked "other" for the employer wage question. It's crazy how many people are dealing with this same system glitch! I've been trying to get through on the phone for over a week with no luck, but all the advice here about calling at exactly 8:00 AM is gold. Definitely going to try that tomorrow. Also planning to get that detailed HR letter everyone's mentioning - the "supplemental vs replacement" language distinction seems to be key. Has anyone tried the appeals process if the phone calls don't work out? Just wondering if that's another avenue to explore. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences - it's so helpful to know we're not alone in this mess! 🙏
