MOHELA login broken? SSN not recognized, can't make student loan payment. Help!

I'm having a nightmare trying to log into my MOHELA account to make a payment on my student loan. I've tried using my SSN and email, as well as my parents' info, but nothing works. The system keeps saying there's no account connected to any of the info we're entering. Has anyone else run into this? It's so frustrating because I need to make a payment and I can't even get through to a real person without putting in the SSN first. Any advice on how to get this sorted out?

Ugh, MOHELA's website is the worst! I had a similar issue last month. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? Sometimes that helps. If not, you might need to call them directly and speak to a rep to verify your account info.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a try. Did you manage to get through to someone on the phone? It seems impossible to reach a human there 😫

0 coins

Yeah, it took forever but I finally got through. Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. Less wait time!

clearing cache didnt work for me. ended up having to fax them my info. what year is this, 1995? 🙄

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/kfgsWnbb8cU

0 coins

Sounds sketchy. Is this legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

0 coins

I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

0 coins

How does it actually work? Do they just have a bunch of people sitting around making calls all day?

0 coins

Nah, it's all automated. They use some kind of AI to navigate the phone menus and detect when a human picks up. Pretty cool tech actually!

Have you checked if your loan was transferred? Sometimes MOHELA takes over loans from other servicers and there can be a gap where your info doesn't work. Happened to me last year and it was a HUGE headache 😤

0 coins

OK, listen up because I've been through this rodeo before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Double-check all your personal info. Sometimes even a small typo in your address can mess things up. 2. If you're sure everything's correct, request a manual account review. You can do this by sending a secure message through their website (if you can access that part) or by mailing a letter. 3. In the meantime, you can make payments by phone or mail. It's old school, but it works. 4. If all else fails, file a complaint with the CFPB. That usually lights a fire under them. 5. Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every failed login attempt. You might need it later. Hang in there, OP. The system's a mess, but you'll get it sorted eventually! 💪

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely try these steps. Really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out!

This is gold 👌 Saving this for future reference!

lol welcome to the wonderful world of student loans 🤡 where nothing works and we're all drowning in debt

0 coins

ain't that the truth 😭 feels like we're all in the same sinking boat

0 coins

Have you tried turning it off and on again? 😂 jk jk... but seriously, sometimes their site goes down for maintenance. Maybe try again in a few hours?

0 coins

This happened to me too! Turns out they had my birthday wrong in their system. One digit off and suddenly I didn't exist 🙄 Def call them and verify ALL your info.

0 coins

Oh wow, I hadn't even thought of that. I'll definitely check that when I get through. Thanks for the tip!

Unpopular opinion: maybe this is a sign from the universe that you shouldn't pay your loans 👀 (I'm kidding, please don't do this, it'll wreck your credit

0 coins

lmao don't tempt me 😂

Not gonna lie, you had me in the first half 🤣

PSA: Always keep copies of your loan documents! I learned this the hard way. Makes it easier to prove your case when stuff like this happens.

Been there! MOHELA's system is notorious for these issues. A few things that worked for me: 1) Try using different browsers (Chrome vs Firefox vs Safari) - sometimes their site has compatibility issues. 2) Make sure you're using the EXACT SSN format they expect (with or without dashes). 3) If you recently moved or changed any personal info, that might be causing the mismatch. 4) As a last resort, you can make payments by phone at 1-888-866-4352, though there's usually a small fee. Don't stress too much - this is unfortunately super common with their platform. You'll get it sorted! 🤞

I've been dealing with MOHELA for years and their system is absolutely terrible. Here's what usually works for me when this happens: First, try using your SSN without any dashes or spaces - sometimes their system is picky about formatting. Also, make sure you're using the exact email address you originally registered with (not a forwarded one). If you've moved recently or changed your name, that could be causing the issue too. In the meantime, you can still make payments by calling their automated phone system at 1-888-866-4352 - there's usually a small processing fee but at least you won't be late. I'd also recommend setting up autopay once you get back in, because dealing with their login issues every month is a nightmare. Good luck! 🤞

0 coins

This is super helpful! I didn't realize the SSN formatting could be such an issue. I'll definitely try the different formats and check my email address too. The autopay suggestion is smart - once I get this mess sorted out, I'm definitely setting that up so I don't have to deal with their broken login system every month. Thanks for the detailed advice!

Oh no, this is so frustrating! I went through something similar a few months ago. Here's what ended up working for me: First, try logging in using just your SSN with no dashes or spaces - their system can be really picky about formatting. Also, double-check that you're using the exact email address you originally signed up with (not a forwarded email). If you recently moved or had any name changes, that could be causing the mismatch too. While you're troubleshooting, you can still make your payment by calling their automated line at 1-888-866-4352 - there's usually a small fee but it beats being late on your payment. I'd also suggest trying different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) since their website sometimes has compatibility issues. If none of that works, definitely file a complaint with the CFPB like Diego suggested - that really does light a fire under them! Document everything and don't give up. MOHELA's system is notoriously glitchy but you'll get through this! 💪

This is such great advice! I'm definitely going to try the SSN formatting thing first - I had no idea that could make such a difference. The phone payment option is a good backup plan too, even with the fee. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to pay our loans, but I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and tips. Makes me feel less alone in dealing with this mess! 🙏

I feel your pain! MOHELA's system has been acting up a lot lately. I had the exact same issue last week - couldn't log in with my SSN or email, kept getting "no account found" errors. What finally worked for me was using a completely different device (switched from my laptop to my phone) and trying during off-peak hours (like early morning or late evening). Their servers seem to get overloaded during business hours. Also, make sure you're going to the right URL - I accidentally ended up on an old cached version of their site once and wasted hours trying to log in there! If you're still stuck, try the "forgot password" option even if you know your password is correct - sometimes it forces a system refresh that fixes these glitches. Hang in there, you're definitely not alone in this struggle! 😤

0 coins

Oh wow, the different device trick is something I hadn't thought of! I've been trying on my laptop all day but maybe I should switch to my phone or tablet. The server overload thing makes total sense too - I was trying during lunch break when probably everyone else is also trying to access their accounts. Thanks for the tip about checking the URL too, I'll make sure I'm on the right site. It's crazy how many workarounds we need just to access our own loan accounts! 🤦‍♀️

This is such a common issue with MOHELA - you're definitely not alone! I went through this exact nightmare about 6 months ago. Here's what I learned from my experience: 1) Try using your SSN in different formats (with dashes, without dashes, with spaces) - their system is incredibly finicky about this. 2) Clear your browser data completely and try in an incognito/private window. 3) If you've had any recent address changes or name updates, that could be causing the mismatch. 4) Try accessing the site at different times - their servers get overwhelmed during peak hours. In the meantime, you can make payments through their automated phone line to avoid late fees. I know it's frustrating, but don't give up! Once you get back in, I'd highly recommend setting up autopay so you don't have to deal with their broken login system every month. Keep us updated on what works for you! 🤞

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'm going to try the SSN formatting variations first - it's wild that something so simple could cause such a huge headache. The incognito window tip is smart too, I hadn't thought of that. I'm definitely planning to set up autopay once I get back in because dealing with this login nightmare every month would drive me crazy. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you! 🙏

Ugh, this exact thing happened to me last month! MOHELA's system is absolutely broken. What worked for me was trying my SSN in every possible format - with dashes, without dashes, with spaces, etc. Turns out they were expecting it without any formatting at all. Also try using a different browser or clearing your cache completely. In the meantime, you can make payments over the phone at 1-888-866-4352 (there's a small fee but better than being late). Their customer service is terrible but if you call right when they open at 8am you might actually get through to someone. Document everything in case you need to file a CFPB complaint later. This whole system is a joke but you'll get it sorted eventually! 😤

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience! The SSN formatting thing seems to be a recurring theme here - I can't believe something so basic can cause such major issues. I'll definitely try all the different formats first thing tomorrow morning. The 8am call tip is gold too, I've been trying to call during lunch breaks when everyone else is probably doing the same thing. It's honestly ridiculous that we need to jump through all these hoops just to pay our loans, but at least knowing I'm not the only one dealing with this makes me feel a bit better. Really appreciate the detailed advice! 🙏

This is so reassuring to hear! I was starting to think I was going crazy or doing something wrong. The SSN formatting issue seems to be the most common culprit based on everyone's responses. I'm definitely going to try the no-dashes version first thing in the morning. The autopay suggestion is brilliant too - once I get through this mess, I never want to have to deal with their login system again! Thanks for the encouragement and the phone number backup plan. It's wild that we all have to become IT troubleshooters just to pay our student loans 😅

I am having the same problem

0 coins

@Bunny McIntyre So frustrating that this is happening to multiple people! Have you tried any of the SSN formatting tricks people mentioned above? Seems like entering it without dashes or spaces is the magic solution for a lot of folks. Also the phone payment option at 1-888-866-4352 might be a good backup while you troubleshoot. We re'all in this together! 😤

Same boat here! Just dealt with this exact issue two weeks ago. Here's what worked for me: 1) Try your SSN without any formatting (no dashes, spaces, nothing) - MOHELA's system is ridiculously picky about this. 2) Use the exact email you registered with originally, not any forwarded ones. 3) Clear your browser completely and try in incognito mode. 4) If you've had any recent address changes or moved, that could be the culprit too. In the meantime, you can make payments by phone at 1-888-866-4352 (small fee but beats late payments). Pro tip: call right at 8am when they open for the shortest hold times. Their system is honestly garbage but you'll get through it! Once you're back in, definitely set up autopay so you don't have to deal with this monthly headache. Document everything just in case you need to file a CFPB complaint later. You got this! 💪

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Been trying to log in for the past two days with no luck. What's really frustrating is that I can see my loan balance when I call their automated line, so I know the account exists, but the website acts like I don't exist. I tried the SSN without dashes trick that everyone's mentioning and still nothing. Has anyone had success reaching them through social media? Sometimes companies respond faster on Twitter when you call them out publicly 😏

0 coins

@Henrietta Beasley Ugh, the fact that you can see your balance on the phone but not online just proves how broken their system is! I haven t'tried the social media route yet but that s'actually genius - public shame might be the only thing that gets their attention 😂 Have you tried using a completely different device? I saw someone mention switching from laptop to phone worked for them. Also maybe try during super off-peak hours like 2am when their servers aren t'getting hammered. This whole situation is beyond ridiculous!

I'm going through this exact same nightmare right now! Been locked out for 3 days and it's driving me insane. Based on everyone's advice here, I'm going to try the SSN without dashes first thing tomorrow morning, then work through all the other formatting options. It's honestly mind-blowing that in 2025 we're still dealing with systems this broken - like, how hard is it to build a functional login page? 🤦‍♂️ Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences though, makes me feel way less alone in this mess. Definitely saving that phone number for backup payments. Once I finally get back in (fingers crossed), autopay is happening immediately so I never have to deal with this again!

@Khalid Howes I totally feel your frustration! I ve'been lurking in this thread because I m'having the exact same issue - it s'like MOHELA s'system just randomly decides to forget we exist 🙄 The SSN formatting thing seems to be helping a lot of people, so definitely worth trying that first. I m'also going to try the early morning login suggestion since their servers probably aren t'as overloaded then. It s'crazy that we all have to become tech support specialists just to pay our loans! Thanks everyone for sharing your solutions - this community is a lifesaver when dealing with MOHELA s'broken systems!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Been trying to log in for the past hour with no luck. Reading through all these responses is both reassuring (I'm not alone!) and infuriating (how is their system THIS broken?). I'm going to try the SSN without dashes trick first, then work through clearing cache and trying different browsers. The phone payment backup at 1-888-866-4352 is clutch - thank you everyone for sharing that! It's wild that we need a whole troubleshooting guide just to access our own loan accounts. MOHELA really needs to get their act together 😤

@Aisha Ali Right there with you! I just started having this issue today and found this thread while frantically googling for solutions. It s'honestly both comforting and terrifying to see how many of us are dealing with the exact same problem - like, how does a major loan servicer have such a fundamentally broken login system? 🤯 I m'definitely going to try the SSN formatting variations everyone s'mentioned. The fact that we need a whole community troubleshooting session just to pay our bills is absolutely ridiculous. Thanks for the phone number backup - at least we have options while their website decides to work again!

OMG this thread is giving me PTSD flashbacks! I went through this exact same nightmare about 3 months ago and it took me almost 2 weeks to get it resolved. Here's what finally worked for me after trying literally everything: 1) The SSN formatting thing is 100% real - try it with no dashes, no spaces, exactly 9 digits 2) Make sure your browser isn't auto-filling any fields with saved info that might be slightly off 3) Try logging in at like 6 AM or really late at night when their servers aren't dying 4) If you've EVER had any name changes (even hyphenated names), that can mess things up The thing that actually solved it for me was calling them and having them manually reset my online account profile. Took 45 minutes on hold but the rep was able to see that my account existed but there was some weird data mismatch in their system. In the meantime, definitely use that phone payment line - the $3 fee is worth not stressing about late payments. And yes, once you get back in, SET UP AUTOPAY immediately! I learned my lesson and never want to deal with their broken login again 😅 Hang in there - this is frustratingly common but it does get resolved eventually!

0 coins

@Bethany Groves This is exactly the kind of detailed breakdown I needed to see! The manual account reset option gives me hope - I ve'been so focused on trying to fix it myself that I didn t'even think about asking them to reset things on their end. 45 minutes on hold sounds painful but honestly worth it if it actually solves the problem. The browser auto-fill tip is really smart too, I bet that s'been messing me up without me realizing it. Thanks for sharing your whole journey - knowing someone else made it through this mess and came out the other side is keeping me sane right now! Definitely doing autopay the second I get back in 🙏

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread! I had the exact same issue last month and what worked for me was actually logging out of ALL my other accounts first (bank, email, etc.) then clearing my entire browser cache and cookies, restarting my browser completely, and THEN trying to log into MOHELA. Apparently their system gets confused if you have too many financial sites open at once? Makes no sense but it worked! Also, try typing your SSN super slowly - I know it sounds weird but I swear their system times out if you type too fast. The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous but at least we're all suffering together 😂 Hope some of these tricks help!
