Can't log into Nelnet for FAFSA loan payment - not receiving verification codes

I'm so frustrated right now. I've been trying to make my monthly payment on my student loans through Nelnet (which services my federal loans from FAFSA), but I can't even log into my account! Every time I try to log in, it's supposed to send me a verification code via text or email, but NOTHING is coming through. I've checked spam folders, verified my contact info is correct on file, and even called their customer service line only to be disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. I'm worried about missing my payment deadline and having it affect my credit score. Has anyone else had this problem with Nelnet recently? Is there a workaround to get into the account or an alternative way to make payments when their 2FA system isn't working? My loan repayment is already stressful enough without tech issues!

Yep, this happened to me last week. Nelnet's authentication system has been glitchy since they updated their portal. What worked for me was trying to log in very early in the morning (like 5-6am) when server traffic is lower. Their system gets overwhelmed during peak hours. Also, if you're worried about making your payment on time, you can call their automated payment line at 888-486-4722. You don't need to log in online - just have your account number ready (it's on any previous statement or letter from them).

Thank you! I didn't know about the automated payment line. I'll try that tomorrow morning. Do you know if they send a confirmation email when the payment goes through that way?

nelnet is THE WORST servicer for fed loans imo. i had them for 3 years and nothing but problems. they randomly lost my income certification twice and tried to put me in standard repayment when i was supposed to be on IBR. good luck getting anyone on the phone too lol

0 coins

SAME. They also applied my extra payments to future interest instead of principal even though I specifically indicated where I wanted it to go. Had to call 4 times to get it fixed.

I work in financial aid at a community college, and we've had several students report this exact issue with Nelnet in the past two weeks. Their IT department confirmed they're having problems with their SMS and email delivery systems for verification codes. While they work on fixing it, here are some alternate ways to make your payment: 1. Use their automated phone system as mentioned above 2. Mail a check to: Nelnet, P.O. Box 2970, Omaha, NE 68103-2970 (include your account number) 3. If you've previously set up auto-pay, those payments should continue even if you can't log in 4. Visit www.studentaid.gov and make a payment through the federal portal (slower but works) Don't worry too much about your credit score - Nelnet is legally required to give a 15-day grace period after the due date before reporting a late payment.

This is SO helpful, thank you! I had no idea I could make payments through studentaid.gov directly. I just checked and my loan details are visible there, so I'll try that route first. Good to know about the grace period too.

I had this EXACT problem with Nelnet last month! After trying everything (literally everything), I found that if you use a different browser than your normal one, sometimes it works. Like if you normally use Chrome, try Firefox or Edge instead. Their cookies/cache system gets weird sometimes. Also, if you're still having trouble reaching a human at Nelnet to help, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual person at Nelnet in about 5 minutes instead of waiting for hours. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or see a demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you back when they've got a representative on the line. Saved me so much frustration when I was dealing with my loan consolidation issues.

0 coins

I just tried the different browser trick and still no luck, but thanks for the suggestion! That Claimyr service sounds interesting - I'll check out the demo. At this point I'll try anything because I really need to talk to an actual human at Nelnet.

0 coins

is that service legit? sounds too good to be true tbh. never heard of a way to skip phone queues before

0 coins

It's definitely legit - I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They don't skip the queue exactly, they just handle the waiting and menu navigation part for you so you don't have to sit with your phone for hours. When an agent finally answers, they connect you.

my roomate works at the fafsa call center (not nelnet but they know stuff) & said nelnet had a security breach they aren't talking about publicly. that's why the codes aren't sending. they said it could be a few more days b4 its fixed. just fyi

0 coins

I haven't heard anything official about a security breach, but I'd be very careful about sharing this kind of information without confirmation. It could cause unnecessary concern. What we do know for certain is that they're having technical difficulties with their verification system.

I experienced this same frustrating situation with Nelnet last month. After several failed attempts to receive verification codes, I discovered a workaround that might help you. Try accessing your account from the StudentAid.gov dashboard instead of going directly to Nelnet's website. When you log into StudentAid.gov with your FSA ID, you can view your loan details and there should be a link to your servicer account that sometimes bypasses the normal verification process. If that doesn't work, I recommend calling Nelnet at 888-486-4722 early in the morning (before 8am Eastern) when call volumes are lower. Ask them to temporarily disable the two-factor authentication on your account due to the technical issues. They can do this for 7 days while you make your payment. Don't worry about missing a payment - federal student loans have a built-in grace period, and you can always request forbearance retroactively if needed. The most important thing is documenting your attempts to pay (take screenshots, note call reference numbers, etc.).

0 coins

Thank you for these detailed suggestions! I'll definitely try the StudentAid.gov dashboard approach first thing tomorrow. And I hadn't thought about asking them to temporarily disable 2FA - that's a great idea if I can actually reach someone. I'll start calling at 7am and hope for the best.

Have u checked if your phone number/email on file with them is actually correct? Sometimes they have old contact info and that's why verification codes don't come through. Happened to me when I changed my phone number but forgot to update it with them.

0 coins

Yes, I double-checked both my email and phone number on file (I can see them on my paper statement from last month), and they're definitely correct. That would have been an easy fix though!

I used to have Nelnet for my FAFSA loans too. Their website constantly had problems! I eventually got so fed up I refinanced with SoFi just to get away from them. Their customer service was terrible anytime I had issues with my income-driven repayment plan documentation. Anyway, before I refinanced, I found that using their mobile app sometimes worked when the website didn't. Have you tried that option? The app had a different login system that didn't always require the verification code.

0 coins

I actually didn't know they had a mobile app! Just downloaded it and will give it a try - thanks for the suggestion. I'm not in a position to refinance right now since I'm working toward PSLF, but it's good to know others have had similar frustrations.

0 coins

Oh if you're going for Public Service Loan Forgiveness definitely DON'T refinance! You'd lose eligibility for PSLF. Hope the app works for you!

Update for everyone in this thread: I just received an official notice that Nelnet has confirmed they're experiencing a system-wide issue with their multi-factor authentication system. They expect it to be resolved within 72 hours. In the meantime, they're automatically applying a 15-day grace period to all accounts with payments due during this timeframe. They're also temporarily expanding their phone payment staff. If you call 888-486-4722 and select option 1, then option 3 for "technical difficulties," you should get routed to a special team that can take your payment over the phone without requiring account login.

0 coins

Thank you so much for this update! Just called the number with those options and finally got through to someone who helped me make my payment. They confirmed they're having widespread issues with their verification system. Such a relief to have this resolved!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been having the exact same issue with Nelnet for the past week - no verification codes coming through at all. It's such a relief to know it's not just me and that there's actually a system-wide problem they're working on. I tried calling the regular customer service line three times and kept getting disconnected after long holds. But after reading through all these comments, I'm going to try that special phone payment option that @Liam Sullivan mentioned, and also attempt the early morning login trick. Has anyone else noticed if this affects their auto-pay customers too? I have auto-pay set up but I'm paranoid it might not go through if their whole system is having issues. I'd rather make a manual payment just to be safe this month. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions - this community is so helpful when dealing with these frustrating servicer problems!

I'm dealing with this exact same frustrating situation right now! I've been trying to log into my Nelnet account for three days to make my payment, and like you, I'm not receiving any verification codes via text or email. I've checked my spam folders multiple times and confirmed my contact info is correct. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea this was a widespread issue with their authentication system. I'm definitely going to try calling that automated payment line at 888-486-4722 that several people mentioned, and also attempt the early morning login approach. It's such a relief to know there's a 15-day grace period and that this won't immediately impact our credit scores. The stress of potentially missing a payment deadline on top of already dealing with student loan payments is just overwhelming. Thank you for posting about this - it's so validating to know we're not alone in dealing with Nelnet's technical issues. Hopefully they get their system fixed soon, but at least now we have some workarounds to make our payments on time!

I'm going through the exact same thing! It's so frustrating when you're trying to be responsible and make your payment on time, but the system won't even let you log in. I've been stressed about this for days thinking it was just me. I just tried that automated phone payment line (888-486-4722) that others mentioned and it actually worked! I was able to make my payment without needing to log into the website at all. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes and they gave me a confirmation number. Definitely recommend trying that if you haven't already. It's such a relief to know this is a known issue and not something we did wrong. Thanks for sharing your experience - it helps knowing we're all dealing with this together!

I'm experiencing this exact same issue and it's so frustrating! I've been trying to log into my Nelnet account for the past few days to make my monthly payment, but no verification codes are coming through either via text or email. I've tried everything - checking spam folders, clearing my browser cache, even trying different devices. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful though! I had no idea this was a widespread system issue with their authentication. I'm definitely going to try calling that automated payment line at 888-486-4722 that several people mentioned, and I might also give the early morning login approach a shot. It's such a relief to know about the 15-day grace period too - I was really worried about this affecting my credit score. The stress of potentially missing a payment deadline is bad enough without having to deal with technical issues on top of it. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions. This community is so helpful when dealing with these servicer problems. Hopefully Nelnet gets their system fixed soon, but at least now we have some solid workarounds to make our payments on time!

I'm so glad I found this thread too! I've been dealing with the exact same verification code issue for almost a week now. It's such a relief to know this is a widespread Nelnet problem and not something wrong with my account specifically. I actually just got off the phone with that automated payment line (888-486-4722) after reading everyone's suggestions, and it worked perfectly! No login required, just needed my account number which I found on my last statement. The whole process took about 8 minutes and they gave me a confirmation number right away. For anyone still struggling with this - I'd definitely recommend the phone payment route over trying to troubleshoot the website login. Save yourself the frustration! And knowing about that 15-day grace period really takes the pressure off too. Thanks to everyone who shared their workarounds and experiences. This community has been a lifesaver during such a stressful situation!

I'm having the exact same issue! I've been trying to access my Nelnet account for the past four days to make my payment, and like everyone else here, no verification codes are coming through at all. I've checked spam, tried different browsers, even had my partner try logging in from their computer - nothing works. Reading through all these responses has been such a relief though - I was starting to think there was something wrong with my account specifically. It's frustrating that Nelnet hasn't been more transparent about this being a system-wide issue, but at least we have each other to share solutions! I just tried the automated phone payment line at 888-486-4722 that so many people recommended, and it worked like a charm! Took maybe 7 minutes total and I got a confirmation number. For anyone still struggling, I'd definitely go this route rather than wasting time trying to troubleshoot the website. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and workarounds - this community is amazing for helping each other navigate these servicer headaches. Hopefully Nelnet gets their act together soon, but at least we know how to work around it now!

I'm dealing with this same nightmare! Been locked out of my Nelnet account for 5 days now with no verification codes coming through. It's such a relief to find this thread and realize it's not just me going crazy. Just called that 888-486-4722 number everyone's been recommending and wow - actually got through and made my payment in under 10 minutes! No website login needed, just had my account number from an old statement. Got a confirmation number too which gives me peace of mind. This whole situation really highlights how terrible Nelnet's communication is - they should have sent out notices about this system-wide issue instead of leaving us all to figure it out ourselves. Thank goodness for communities like this where we can help each other out! Definitely saving that phone number for future reference.

It's incredibly frustrating when you're just trying to make your payment on time. Thank you all for sharing these workarounds! I had no idea about the automated phone payment line at 888-486-4722. Just tried it based on everyone's recommendations and it worked perfectly - was able to make my payment in about 8 minutes without needing to log into the website at all. They gave me a confirmation number which is such a relief. It's really disappointing that Nelnet hasn't been more transparent about this being a system-wide authentication issue. If it weren't for this community thread, I would have thought something was wrong with my account specifically. The stress of potentially missing a payment deadline on top of regular student loan anxiety is just awful. Really grateful for everyone sharing their experiences and solutions here - this is exactly why these communities are so valuable when dealing with servicer problems!

I was in the same boat just a few days ago - completely panicked thinking I was the only one having this problem. That automated phone line has been a real lifesaver for so many of us. It's frustrating that we had to figure this out ourselves instead of Nelnet being proactive about communicating the issue, but at least we know there's a reliable workaround now. Thanks for sharing your success story - it gives me confidence that this solution will keep working while they hopefully fix their authentication system. Definitely keeping that number handy too in case this happens again!

I'm going through this exact same nightmare with Nelnet right now! Been trying to log in for the past 5 days to make my payment and absolutely no verification codes are coming through - not to my phone, not to my email, not even in spam. I was starting to panic thinking my account got hacked or something. This thread is such a blessing - I had no clue this was happening to so many people! Just tried that automated payment line at 888-486-4722 that everyone's been mentioning and OH MY GOSH it actually worked! Took maybe 6 minutes total and I got my confirmation number. Such a huge relief. It's honestly ridiculous that Nelnet hasn't sent out any kind of notice about this system-wide issue. How are we supposed to know that the problem isn't on our end? Thank goodness for communities like this where we can actually help each other navigate these servicer disasters. For anyone else dealing with this - definitely skip the website entirely and just call that number. Don't waste your time trying to troubleshoot their broken authentication system. The phone payment process is actually way easier than their clunky website anyway!

I'm so glad you were able to get your payment through! I've been following this thread as someone new to dealing with federal student loans, and it's been really eye-opening to see how common these technical issues are with Nelnet. I don't have my loans with them yet (still in school), but reading everyone's experiences and solutions here has been incredibly valuable for when I eventually have to deal with loan servicers myself. It's amazing how this community has come together to help each other navigate what could have been a really stressful situation for so many people. The fact that you all had to figure out these workarounds yourselves instead of getting clear communication from Nelnet is pretty concerning though.
