FAFSA verification codes not sending to texts or emails - widespread issue?

So frustrated right now! I've been trying to log into my FAFSA account since 6 AM to finish my 2025-2026 application before the priority deadline, but the system won't send verification codes to either my email or phone. I've requested codes at least 8 times, checked spam folders, verified my contact info is correct, and even tried using my parent's phone number instead. Nothing is coming through! I've checked with 3 friends who are also trying to submit today, and they're having the exact same problem. Has the studentaid.gov system crashed? Anyone else experiencing this? Any workarounds? I NEED to get this submitted today or I might miss out on my school's priority aid consideration!

yep same here. tried for like 2 hours this morning. verification texts not coming thru at all. site must be glitching bad today

Ugh, this is the worst timing! Did you find any way around it? I tried using the "forgot password" option thinking maybe that would bypass the verification code, but no luck.

This appears to be a widespread issue today. The Federal Student Aid system occasionally experiences these verification code delivery problems during high-traffic periods, especially near priority deadlines. A few recommendations: 1. Try accessing the site during off-peak hours (very early morning or late evening) 2. Use a completely different browser or device if possible 3. If you have documentation of your attempts today (screenshots), keep those as evidence in case you need to appeal a missed deadline 4. Many schools will grant extensions if there are documented FSA system issues The good news is these outages typically resolve within 24-48 hours.

Not always true. Last year the same thing happened to me and it took them FOUR DAYS to fix it!! And my school refused to give me an extension even with screenshots. The whole FAFSA system is a joke.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue - both as a student (for my graduate FAFSA) and as a parent trying to contribute to my son's application. I've been trying since yesterday afternoon. Called their support line and waited 2 hours before being disconnected. Is there any official acknowledgment of the problem? I'm worried about missing our school's May 1st priority deadline for the Parent Plus loan consideration.

Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual FAFSA agent without the endless wait times. I was dealing with verification code issues last week (probably the same system problem) and was going insane with 3+ hour wait times. Used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an agent in about 10 minutes who confirmed it was a system issue and flagged my account so I wouldn't be penalized for the delay. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

This is definitely a known issue that started early this morning. I work in a university financial aid office and we've received multiple reports from students. I've confirmed with FSA that their SMS and email verification systems are experiencing technical difficulties. Important things to know: 1. FSA is aware and working on a fix 2. They've assured us no student will be penalized for delays caused by this issue 3. Most schools (including ours) are being instructed to honor priority deadlines for affected students Document your attempts with screenshots if possible. The issue is occurring in their identity verification system that handles the two-factor authentication, not in the main application system.

Thank you so much for this information! That's a huge relief. Do you know if we need to submit any kind of formal documentation to schools about being affected by this issue, or will they automatically extend deadlines?

Just to add to the confusion - I finally got a verification code after trying for 6 hours, but when I entered it, the system said it was invalid! Has anyone successfully gotten past this stage today? I'm wondering if I should just give up and try again tomorrow, but I'm worried about my school's SAI calculation priority deadline...

If you received a code that was rejected as invalid, that's likely because the codes expire after 10 minutes. With the system delays today, many codes are arriving after they've already expired. I recommend continuing to try but documenting each attempt. Again, schools are being instructed to accommodate students affected by this verified system issue.

THIS IS WHY THE WHOLE FAFSA SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! Every single year there's some new disaster. Last year it was the delayed rollout, now it's verification codes. They completely overhaul the system and cant even get basic functionality right. Meanwhile students lose out on thousands in financial aid because of THEIR technical errors. And dont even get me started on how they calculate the SAI now... completely unfair to middle class families. Sorry for the rant but im SO DONE with this garbage system.

for real tho. my cousin missed out on a full ride scholarship last year cuz of fafsa delays and ended up taking out loans instead. system is trash

Update: Federal Student Aid has now posted an official notice on their website acknowledging the verification code delivery issue. They estimate it will be resolved by tomorrow morning. They've also stated they're working with schools to ensure students aren't penalized for this technical problem. If your school has a priority deadline today, I recommend emailing your financial aid office with: 1. Screenshots showing your attempts to log in 2. A link to the FSA system status page showing the outage 3. A request for deadline accommodation due to the verified system issue Most institutions will be understanding given this is a documented problem.

Thanks for the update! I just checked their Twitter and they've confirmed it there too. I've already emailed my financial aid office with screenshots. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly.

Just wanted to share that I finally got through after trying since yesterday! The verification codes started working again around 11 PM last night. For anyone still having issues, I noticed the codes were coming through much faster when I used my school email address instead of my personal Gmail. Not sure if that was coincidence or if there's something with how different email providers are handling the FSA messages. Also, make sure to check your "Updates" or "Promotions" tabs in Gmail - one of my codes ended up there instead of my main inbox. Don't give up! The system seems to be stabilizing.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm going to try using my .edu email address instead of my personal one. I hadn't thought about checking the other Gmail tabs either - that's a great tip. It's such a relief to hear that people are finally getting through. I've been stressed all day thinking I was going to miss my deadline!

This is super helpful! I've been stuck on this issue for two days now. Just tried switching to my university email address and got a verification code within 5 minutes - it actually worked! For anyone else reading this, definitely try using your .edu email if you have one. Also worth clearing your browser cache completely before trying again. Thanks so much for sharing what worked for you!

This is amazing - thank you for posting this update! I was just about to give up for the day but decided to try your suggestion about using my .edu email. Switched from my Yahoo account to my college email and boom - verification code arrived in under 2 minutes and actually worked! I'm finally logged in and submitting my FAFSA now. You might have just saved my financial aid prospects! For anyone else still struggling, definitely try different email addresses if you have them available.

I'm having the exact same problem! Been trying since 5 AM this morning and absolutely nothing is coming through - no texts, no emails, checked every folder. This is so stressful because I also have a priority deadline today. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm going to try switching to my .edu email like Aisha suggested and also document everything with screenshots just in case. It's honestly ridiculous that this keeps happening every year with FAFSA. At least it sounds like schools are being understanding about extensions due to the system issues. Will update if I manage to get through!

Good luck Sophie! I'm in the same boat - been trying since yesterday with no luck. Just switched to my .edu email based on Aisha's tip and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The screenshot documentation is definitely a good idea too. It's so frustrating that we have to deal with this technical mess when we're already stressed about financial aid deadlines. At least it sounds like the system is slowly getting better. Let us know if the email switch works for you too!

Just wanted to add my experience to help others - I was stuck for almost 24 hours but finally got through this morning! What worked for me was a combination of switching to my .edu email (thanks Aisha!) and trying during off-peak hours around 6 AM. I also cleared my browser cookies completely before attempting again. The verification code came through in about 3 minutes and actually worked on the first try. For anyone still struggling, don't lose hope! The system definitely seems more stable now than it was yesterday. Also, if you're worried about missing deadlines, definitely reach out to your school's financial aid office proactively - they've been really understanding about these technical issues from what I've heard.

Thanks Connor! This is really encouraging to hear. I've been dealing with this issue for over a day now and was starting to panic about my deadline. I'm going to try your approach - switching to my .edu email, clearing cookies, and attempting during early morning hours. It's such a relief to see that people are finally getting through. I really appreciate everyone sharing what's working for them. Definitely going to contact my financial aid office today as well just to be safe. Fingers crossed this nightmare is finally coming to an end!

I'm so relieved to find this thread! I've been pulling my hair out since yesterday trying to get verification codes. Been refreshing my email and checking my phone constantly with no luck. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm definitely going to try the .edu email trick that Aisha shared - that seems to be working for a lot of people. I also like Connor's suggestion about trying during off-peak hours. I've already taken screenshots of all my failed attempts just in case I need to appeal to my school's financial aid office. It's honestly insane that we have to deal with this level of technical incompetence when our financial futures are on the line. Thank you everyone for sharing your solutions and keeping each other updated - this community support is honestly the only thing keeping me sane right now!

Hang in there Luca! I just went through the same frustration yesterday and I totally understand how stressful this is. The .edu email switch really does seem to be the game changer - I was skeptical at first but it worked for me too after nothing else did. Also try completely logging out of any existing FAFSA sessions and starting fresh with a cleared browser cache. The early morning timing (like 5-7 AM) seems to help avoid the peak traffic too. You're smart to document everything with screenshots - that saved me when I had to explain the delay to my financial aid office. Don't lose hope, the system really is getting more stable! Keep us posted on how it goes!

I'm dealing with this same nightmare right now! Been trying to access my FAFSA since 4 AM and absolutely nothing is working. After reading through all these responses, I'm definitely going to try switching to my .edu email address since that seems to be the magic solution for so many people here. It's incredibly frustrating that we have to troubleshoot basic system functionality during such critical deadlines, but I'm grateful for everyone sharing what's actually working. Going to clear my browser cache, try the .edu email, and attempt this during early morning hours tomorrow if it still doesn't work today. Already screenshotted all my failed attempts just in case. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and solutions - this thread is honestly a lifesaver when the official FAFSA support is basically non-existent!

I feel your pain Amina! I've been lurking on this thread all day watching everyone's struggles and solutions. Just wanted to chime in as someone who was in the exact same boat yesterday - the .edu email switch really is like magic! I was skeptical reading all these success stories but figured I had nothing to lose. Switched from my Gmail to my university email and got a code within 10 minutes that actually worked. Also definitely try the early morning approach - seems like 5-6 AM is the sweet spot when the system isn't overloaded. Keep those screenshots handy too! My school's financial aid office was super understanding when I showed them evidence of the technical issues. You've got this - hang in there and don't give up!

Just wanted to give everyone an update - I finally got through this morning around 6 AM using the .edu email trick that Aisha shared! I had been stuck for almost 48 hours using my personal Gmail account with zero success. Switched to my university email address, cleared my browser cache completely, and tried during those early morning hours when traffic is lower. The verification code came through in about 7 minutes and worked perfectly on the first try. I'm now successfully logged in and submitting my FAFSA. For anyone still struggling: definitely try your .edu email if you have one, clear ALL browser data (cookies, cache, everything), and attempt during off-peak hours like 5-7 AM. Also keep documenting your attempts with screenshots - my financial aid office was very understanding when I showed them evidence of the technical issues and confirmed they won't penalize students for these system failures. Thanks to everyone in this thread for sharing solutions and keeping each other motivated. This community support made all the difference during such a stressful situation!

This is such great news Aria! I'm so relieved to hear another success story. I've been following this thread religiously because I'm still stuck in verification code hell myself. Your step-by-step breakdown is really helpful - I think the key details are switching to .edu email, clearing ALL browser data (not just cache), and trying during those super early hours. I'm definitely going to set my alarm for 5 AM tomorrow and try your exact approach. It's honestly crazy that we've had to become tech support experts just to access financial aid, but I'm so grateful for everyone sharing what actually works. Thanks for taking the time to update us even after you got through - that's really thoughtful and gives the rest of us hope!

I'm experiencing this exact same issue right now! Been trying since yesterday afternoon with absolutely no luck - no verification codes coming through to either my phone or email despite multiple attempts. This is so incredibly stressful with priority deadlines looming. Reading through all the success stories here, I'm definitely going to try switching to my .edu email address since that seems to be the breakthrough solution for so many people. Will also try the early morning approach (5-6 AM) when the system traffic is lighter, and make sure to completely clear my browser cache first. Already have screenshots of all my failed attempts documented just in case I need to provide evidence to my financial aid office. Thank you to everyone sharing what's actually working - this thread is honestly keeping me sane during this nightmare! Will report back if the .edu email switch works for me too.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now Amelia! Been stuck for over 24 hours and was starting to lose hope until I found this thread. The .edu email solution that Aisha discovered really does seem to be the key - I've seen so many success stories here using that approach. I'm planning to try it first thing tomorrow morning around 5 AM when the system isn't overloaded. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to figure out these workarounds ourselves when this should just work properly, but I'm so thankful for everyone sharing their solutions here. Definitely keep those screenshots - seems like most schools are being understanding about these documented system failures. Fingers crossed we both get through soon!
