FAFSA verification codes not sending to texts or emails - widespread issue?
So frustrated right now! I've been trying to log into my FAFSA account since 6 AM to finish my 2025-2026 application before the priority deadline, but the system won't send verification codes to either my email or phone. I've requested codes at least 8 times, checked spam folders, verified my contact info is correct, and even tried using my parent's phone number instead. Nothing is coming through! I've checked with 3 friends who are also trying to submit today, and they're having the exact same problem. Has the studentaid.gov system crashed? Anyone else experiencing this? Any workarounds? I NEED to get this submitted today or I might miss out on my school's priority aid consideration!

AuthorUgh, this is the worst timing! Did you find any way around it? I tried using the "forgot password" option thinking maybe that would bypass the verification code, but no luck.

Not always true. Last year the same thing happened to me and it took them FOUR DAYS to fix it!! And my school refused to give me an extension even with screenshots. The whole FAFSA system is a joke.

Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual FAFSA agent without the endless wait times. I was dealing with verification code issues last week (probably the same system problem) and was going insane with 3+ hour wait times. Used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an agent in about 10 minutes who confirmed it was a system issue and flagged my account so I wouldn't be penalized for the delay. This is definitely a known issue that started early this morning. I work in a university financial aid office and we've received multiple reports from students. I've confirmed with FSA that their SMS and email verification systems are experiencing technical difficulties. Important things to know: 1. FSA is aware and working on a fix 2. They've assured us no student will be penalized for delays caused by this issue 3. Most schools (including ours) are being instructed to honor priority deadlines for affected students Document your attempts with screenshots if possible. The issue is occurring in their identity verification system that handles the two-factor authentication, not in the main application system.

Just to add to the confusion - I finally got a verification code after trying for 6 hours, but when I entered it, the system said it was invalid! Has anyone successfully gotten past this stage today? If you received a code that was rejected as invalid, that's likely because the codes expire after 10 minutes. With the system delays today, many codes are arriving after they've already expired. I recommend continuing to try but documenting each attempt. Again, schools are being instructed to accommodate students affected by this verified system issue.

THIS IS WHY THE WHOLE FAFSA SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! Every single year there's some new disaster. Last year it was the delayed rollout, now it's verification codes. They completely overhaul the system and cant even get basic functionality right. Meanwhile students lose out on thousands in financial aid because of THEIR technical errors. And dont even get me started on how they calculate the SAI now... completely unfair to middle class families. Sorry for the rant but im SO DONE with this garbage system.

Update: Federal Student Aid has now posted an official notice on their website acknowledging the verification code delivery issue. They estimate it will be resolved by tomorrow morning. They've also stated they're working with schools to ensure students aren't penalized for this technical problem. If your school has a priority deadline today, I recommend emailing your financial aid office with: 1. Screenshots showing your attempts to log in 2. A link to the FSA system status page showing the outage 3. A request for deadline accommodation due to the verified system issue Most institutions will be understanding given this is a documented problem.

Just wanted to share that I finally got through after trying since yesterday! The verification codes started working again around 11 PM last night. For anyone still having issues, I noticed the codes were coming through much faster when I used my school email address instead of my personal Gmail. Not sure if that was coincidence or if there's something with how different email providers are handling the FSA messages. Also, make sure to check your "Updates" or "Promotions" tabs in Gmail - one of my codes ended up there instead of my main inbox. Don't give up! The system seems to be stabilizing.
