MOHELA: $3000+ payment taken from bank but not showing on account. No confirmation. Help!

Hey everyone, I'm having a frustrating issue with my student loan payment. I made a payment of over $3000 on my unsubsidized loan, which was taken out of my bank account on 9/27. The problem is, it's not showing up on my MOHELA account at all. I never got any confirmation of the payment either. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do?

I found a way to solve missing MOHELA student loan payment, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOw3oFx2cNk

Ugh, that sucks! I've had similar issues with MOHELA before. Have you tried calling their customer service? Be prepared to wait on hold for like an eternity tho 🙄

0 coins

Yeah, I've been trying to get through to them for days. It's so frustrating!

0 coins

Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have better luck getting through

0 coins

lol good luck. their customer service is a joke 🤡

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/kfgsWnbb8cU

0 coins

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

0 coins

It does! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time.

0 coins

20 bucks tho? Idk if its worth it...

0 coins

Trust me, when you've been trying to get through for weeks, $20 is nothing compared to the stress it saves you.

This happened to me last year! Here's what you need to do: 1. Document everything. Print out your bank statement showing the withdrawal. 2. Take screenshots of your MOHELA account showing no payment. 3. Write down all the times you've tried to contact them. 4. Send a certified letter to MOHELA explaining the situation and demanding they apply your payment. 5. If they don't respond within 30 days, file a complaint with the CFPB. It's a pain, but you gotta be proactive with these guys. Don't let them keep your money!

0 coins

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely follow these steps.

0 coins

This is solid advice. I'd also recommend CC'ing your state's attorney general on that certified letter. Sometimes that lights a fire under them.

0 coins

have you checked your spam folder for the confirmation email? sometimes mohela's emails end up there for me

0 coins

Man, I swear these loan servicers are the worst. It's like they're purposely trying to screw us over. 🤬 Hang in there, OP!

0 coins

For real tho. Sometimes I wonder if they're just hoping we'll give up and forget about it 🤔

0 coins

Quick question - did you make the payment through MOHELA's website or did you do a bank transfer? If it was a bank transfer, sometimes it can take a few extra days to post.

0 coins

I made it through their website. And it's been over a week now 😕

0 coins

Oof, yeah that's definitely not right then. Def follow up with them ASAP.

0 coins

Not to freak you out, but you might wanna check if there was any fraud on your account. I've heard stories of people's payments getting redirected. Might be worth giving your bank a call too, just to be safe.

bump for visibility. good luck OP!

This is so stressful! I had a similar situation with MOHELA last year where a $2,400 payment disappeared for almost 3 weeks. What finally worked for me was escalating through their complaint process - I filed a complaint through their website AND called their escalation line (different from regular customer service). The escalation team was actually helpful and found that my payment had been "stuck" in their system due to some processing error. They applied it retroactively and even waived the late fees that had accumulated. Don't give up - that's YOUR money and they need to account for it!

0 coins

This is really helpful! Do you happen to remember what number you called for the escalation line? I've been calling the regular customer service number but maybe there's a better way to get through to someone who can actually help.

Holy cow, $3000+ is a lot of money to just disappear! 😱 I feel for you - I've been through payment nightmares with MOHELA before too. One thing that helped me was logging into my online account and checking the "Payment History" section really carefully - sometimes payments show up there even when they don't appear on the main dashboard. Also, if you have your bank statement handy, try to match the exact amount and date when you call them - having those specific details ready made a huge difference when I had to dispute a missing payment. Really hope you get this sorted out soon, that kind of stress is the absolute worst! 💪

0 coins

Great advice about checking the Payment History section! I actually had something similar happen where my payment showed up there but not on the main page - turns out it was a display glitch on their end. @Isabella Costa definitely try this while you re'waiting to get through to customer service. And yeah, having all your bank details ready when you do call will save you so much time and frustration!

Oh my gosh, this exact same thing happened to me about 6 months ago with a $2,800 payment! It's absolutely terrifying when that much money just vanishes. Here's what I learned from my nightmare experience: First, definitely check if MOHELA has any "system maintenance" notices on their website - sometimes payments get delayed during those periods but they don't always tell you upfront. Second, when you do get through to someone (and you WILL eventually), ask them to check for "pending transactions" or "unposted payments" - my payment was sitting in some kind of limbo status for 2 weeks before they found it. Also, don't let them tell you to "wait a few more business days" - a week is already way too long for an electronic payment. Be polite but firm that this needs to be resolved immediately. I ended up having to speak to 3 different representatives before someone actually looked deeper into their system. You've got this - just stay persistent! 🙏

0 coins

This is such helpful advice, thank you! I never would have thought to ask about "pending transactions" specifically. It's crazy how these payments can just get stuck in limbo like that. I'm definitely going to use your tip about being firm with them - you're right that a week is way too long to wait. It's frustrating that we have to fight so hard just to get our own payments properly processed! 😤

I'm so sorry this is happening to you! Missing payment issues are absolutely nerve-wracking, especially with such a large amount. I went through something similar with MOHELA earlier this year - my $1,800 payment vanished for almost 2 weeks. What ended up working for me was keeping a detailed log of every call I made (date, time, representative name if they gave it, and what they told me). When I finally got someone who could help, having that documentation made them take me more seriously. Also, if you haven't already, try logging in at different times of day - I noticed MOHELA's system sometimes shows different information during off-peak hours vs busy times. And definitely save/screenshot everything you can from your bank showing the payment went through. You shouldn't have to fight this hard for your own money, but unfortunately that's the reality with these servicers. Stay strong and keep pushing - that $3000+ is rightfully yours and they need to account for it! 💪

This is really solid advice about keeping a detailed log! I wish I had thought of that when I was dealing with my own payment issues. The tip about logging in at different times is interesting too - I never realized their system might show different info depending on when you check. It's so frustrating that we have to become amateur detectives just to track our own payments, but you're absolutely right that having all that documentation makes them take you seriously. Thanks for sharing what worked for you - it gives me hope that there are ways to get through their system! @Keith Davidson did you ever find out what actually caused your payment to go missing in the first place?

0 coins

I'm really sorry you're dealing with this - having $3000+ disappear is absolutely terrifying! I actually work in banking and see this kind of issue more often than you'd think. Here's what I'd recommend: First, get a detailed transaction record from your bank showing the exact routing/account numbers the payment went to - this will help MOHELA trace where your money actually ended up. Second, when you call MOHELA, specifically ask them to check their "exception processing queue" - sometimes large payments get flagged for manual review and just sit there forgotten. Third, if you made the payment near a weekend or holiday, ask them to check if it got processed by a different batch system. I've seen payments get "lost" between their regular processing and their weekend/holiday processing systems. Also, document everything with timestamps - if this goes to a complaint, having detailed records will work in your favor. Don't let them brush you off with "wait 3-5 business days" - at over a week, this is definitely a problem that needs immediate attention. You've got every right to be frustrated, and don't give up until they find your money!

0 coins

Wow, this is incredibly helpful coming from someone who actually works in banking! I had no idea about the "exception processing queue" - that sounds exactly like what might have happened to my payment. The tip about checking routing/account numbers is smart too. @Luca Ferrari do you know if there s'a specific department at MOHELA that handles these exception cases, or do I just need to keep asking regular customer service to check that queue? I m'definitely going to ask about the weekend/holiday processing systems too since my payment was made on a Friday. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise - it s'giving me a much better roadmap for how to approach this!

This is absolutely unacceptable! I've been dealing with MOHELA for years and their payment processing issues are getting worse, not better. A few things that might help while you're fighting this battle: 1. Log into your account and download/save a PDF of your current account statement showing the missing payment - sometimes their system updates overnight and you want proof of what it looked like when you first noticed the issue. 2. Call your bank and ask them to provide you with a "trace number" or "reference number" for that specific transaction - this will help MOHELA track exactly where your payment went on their end. 3. If you used a debit card for the payment, ask your bank to do a "payment trace" - they can often see exactly which merchant account received your funds. The fact that you didn't get any confirmation email is a huge red flag. Even when MOHELA's system is glitchy, they usually send some kind of receipt. This sounds like your payment might have gotten stuck in their processing pipeline somewhere. Don't let them make you wait weeks for this to resolve - $3000+ is way too much money to just disappear into the ether! Keep us posted on what happens - rooting for you! 🤞

0 coins

This is such a comprehensive list of actionable steps! I especially appreciate the tip about getting a trace number from the bank - I never would have known to ask for that specifically. The point about no confirmation email is really concerning too. @GalaxyGuardian do you know roughly how long a "payment trace" typically takes? I'm worried about how much time is passing while my payment is just sitting somewhere in limbo. It's honestly shocking that we have to become payment detectives just to make sure our own money gets properly applied to our accounts!

I'm so sorry you're going through this! I went through something very similar with MOHELA about 8 months ago - a $2,200 payment that just vanished into thin air. The stress and anxiety of having that much money disappear is absolutely awful, especially when you're trying to be responsible and pay down your loans. Here's what I learned from my experience: MOHELA has what they call a "payment research department" that's separate from regular customer service. When you call, specifically ask to be transferred to "payment research" or "payment disputes" - don't let them keep you in the regular customer service queue. These specialists actually have access to different systems and can see pending/stuck transactions that regular reps can't. Also, I found it helpful to call first thing in the morning (like 8 AM EST) when their systems are less bogged down. And definitely have your bank statement ready showing the exact amount, date, and the last 4 digits of the account it was pulled from. The whole thing took about 10 days to resolve for me, but they did find my payment stuck in some kind of "manual review" status and applied it retroactively with no penalties. Don't give up - that money is yours and they absolutely need to account for it! Sending you good vibes that this gets sorted out quickly! 🤞💙

Mei Lin

This is exactly the kind of specific advice I was hoping to find! Thank you so much for sharing what worked for you @Kaylee Cook. I had no idea there was a separate "payment research department" - that could be a game changer. I've been stuck in the regular customer service loop and getting nowhere. The tip about calling at 8 AM EST is really smart too. It's both reassuring and frustrating to hear that this took 10 days for you to resolve - reassuring because it DID get resolved, but frustrating that we have to fight so hard for something that should be straightforward. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's giving me hope and a much better strategy moving forward! 🙏

This is absolutely infuriating and unfortunately way too common with MOHELA! I went through something similar last year with a $2,600 payment that disappeared for almost 3 weeks. Here's what I wish someone had told me from the start: First, immediately request a "payment confirmation number" or "transaction ID" from when you made the payment - even if you didn't get an email confirmation, they should have generated one in their system. If they can't provide this, that's a huge red flag that something went wrong during processing. Second, escalate immediately - don't waste time with regular customer service. Ask specifically to speak with their "Payment Processing Supervisor" or "Account Research Team." I spent way too long getting bounced around by regular reps who clearly didn't have access to the tools needed to actually investigate. Third, file a complaint with the CFPB while you're dealing with this - don't wait. Having an active complaint sometimes motivates them to resolve issues faster, and it creates an official paper trail if things get worse. Most importantly, document EVERYTHING with timestamps. Screenshot your account daily showing the missing payment, save all your bank records, and keep a log of every call you make. I cannot stress enough how important this documentation became when I finally got someone who could help. Your $3000+ didn't just evaporate - it's sitting somewhere in their system and they need to find it NOW. Don't let them make you wait any longer! 💪

This is incredibly thorough advice, thank you @Alice Pierce! The tip about requesting a "payment confirmation number" even without an email confirmation is brilliant - I never would have thought to ask for that. You're absolutely right that if they can't provide one, that's a major red flag about what went wrong during processing. I'm definitely going to ask for the "Payment Processing Supervisor" specifically instead of getting stuck with regular customer service again. And filing the CFPB complaint simultaneously is smart - I was thinking I should wait to see if MOHELA resolves it first, but you make a great point about creating that official paper trail right away. It's honestly ridiculous that we need this level of strategic planning just to track down our own payments, but I really appreciate you sharing what worked for you. This gives me a much more aggressive action plan to tackle this issue! 🙏

This is absolutely terrifying and I feel for you so much! Having over $3000 just disappear is a nightmare scenario. I actually had a similar issue with MOHELA about a year ago with a $1,900 payment, and here's what I learned that might help: When you do get through to someone (and definitely try that early morning call strategy others mentioned), ask them to check their "ACH processing logs" specifically. My payment had been processed but got stuck because of a "name mismatch" between what I had on file and what my bank sent - even though it was just a tiny difference in how my middle initial was formatted. Also, this might sound obvious but make sure to check if MOHELA applied your payment to a different loan than intended. Sometimes large payments get auto-applied to whatever loan has the highest interest rate, even if that's not what you selected. I've seen people panic about missing payments only to find out it went to their graduate loan instead of their undergrad loan. One more thing - if you're comfortable sharing, what method did you use to make the payment? Credit card, bank transfer, or direct debit? Different payment methods sometimes have different processing timelines and error patterns with MOHELA's system. Really hoping you get this resolved quickly - keep fighting for your money! 💪

0 coins

This is really helpful advice @TommyKapitz! The "ACH processing logs" tip is something I haven't seen mentioned before - that name mismatch issue sounds like exactly the kind of technical glitch that could cause a payment to get stuck. And you make an excellent point about checking if the payment got auto-applied to a different loan. I made the payment through MOHELA's website using my bank account (ACH transfer), and I specifically selected my unsubsidized loan, but now I'm wondering if I should double-check all my other loans just in case. It's honestly mind-blowing that we have to think about all these potential failure points just to make a basic payment. Thanks for sharing what you learned from your experience - every bit of insight helps when dealing with this mess! 😅

This is absolutely horrible and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! $3000+ is a huge amount to just disappear - I would be losing my mind right now. I haven't had this exact issue with MOHELA, but I've had my fair share of payment nightmares with them over the years. One thing I'd suggest that I haven't seen mentioned yet - check if your bank shows any "pending reversals" or "provisional credits" related to that transaction. Sometimes when payments get stuck in processing limbo, banks will show the initial debit but then there might be some kind of pending adjustment that isn't immediately obvious. Also, when you do get through to MOHELA (and definitely try all the great strategies others have shared!), ask them to send you a written summary of what they find via email. Even if it's just "we're investigating your payment dated X for amount Y," having something in writing makes them more accountable and gives you better documentation if you need to escalate further. The fact that so many people in this thread have had similar experiences really shows this is a systemic problem with their payment processing. That's both reassuring (you're not alone!) and absolutely infuriating that they haven't fixed these issues. Stay strong and keep pushing - that money belongs to you and they HAVE to account for it. Rooting for you! 🤞
