MOHELA showing I owe $ during supposed retroactive forbearance - anyone else?
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my student loans and MOHELA. I'm supposed to be on forbearance, but I just got a notice saying I owe money. This doesn't make sense because the forbearance should be retroactive. I think I might be on an IDR plan now, but I'm pretty sure I should still be in forbearance. Has anyone else dealt with this? It's so frustrating to get conflicting information.

Ugh, MOHELA strikes again! š I swear they're always messing something up. Have you tried calling them? Be prepared to wait on hold for like 3 hours tho lol

ā¢Yeah, I've been trying to call but the wait times are insane. It's like they don't want us to actually talk to anyone š¤¦āāļø

ā¢Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through in only 45 minutes last week!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/kfgsWnbb8cU

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

ā¢Totally legit! I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Definitely worth it for important calls.

ā¢How does it work exactly? Do you have to give them your phone number?

ā¢Yeah, you give them your number so they can connect you when an agent picks up. It's all automated tho, no sketchy middlemen or anything.

I've been dealing with MOHELA for months now, and let me tell you, it's a complete circus šŖš¤” Here's what I've learned: ⢠Always, ALWAYS get everything in writing. If someone tells you something over the phone, ask them to email you a summary. ⢠Keep a detailed log of every interaction, including dates, names, and what was discussed. ⢠If you're supposed to be on forbearance, make sure you have the official forbearance approval document. They might have "lost" it. ⢠Check your account online regularly. Sometimes they make changes without notifying you. ⢠If you're on an IDR plan, double-check that they're using your correct income information. ⢠Don't be afraid to file a complaint with the CFPB if they're not resolving your issues. Hang in there, OP. It's a long game, but you'll get it sorted out eventually!

ā¢Wow, thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely start keeping better records. Have you had any luck getting retroactive forbearance applied?

ā¢Yes, but it took about 3 months and multiple calls. Be persistent and don't let them brush you off!

Have you checked your credit report recently? Sometimes these mix-ups can affect your credit score. Might be worth keeping an eye on that too.

Plot twist: what if we all just... stopped paying? š They can't come after all of us, right?

ā¢Don't even joke about that. My cousin tried something similar and it totally wrecked his financial future.

Hey OP, what kind of forbearance are you supposed to be on? There are different types and the rules can vary. Might help to clarify that when you talk to them.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I've been in the same boat with FedLoan. These servicers are all the same - incompetent and unhelpful. Hang in there!

Have you considered reaching out to your congressperson's office? Sometimes they can help cut through the red tape with federal loan servicers.

ā¢I hadn't thought of that! Do they really help with individual cases?

ā¢Yep! Their constituent services can be surprisingly helpful. Worth a shot!

This is such a frustrating situation! I had something similar happen last year where MOHELA was showing I owed money during what should have been administrative forbearance. Turned out they had processed my IDR application but somehow "forgot" to apply the forbearance period that was supposed to cover the gap. A few things that helped me: - Ask specifically about "administrative forbearance" vs regular forbearance - they're different - Request they pull up your loan history timeline to see exactly when each status change occurred - If you submitted any paperwork recently (like IDR recertification), ask if that triggered the forbearance removal The retroactive part is key - they should be able to backdate any corrections once they figure out what went wrong. Don't let them tell you it's "too late" to fix retroactively. Good luck! š¤

ā¢This is super helpful, thank you! I think you might be onto something with the administrative forbearance vs regular forbearance distinction. I did submit an IDR recertification recently, so that could definitely be what triggered this mess. I'm going to ask them specifically about that when I finally get through to someone. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain the difference! š

I'm dealing with something similar right now! MOHELA has been a nightmare to work with. What I've found helpful is requesting a "loan status history" document that shows all the changes to your account over time. This helped me catch where they made errors in applying my forbearance dates. Also, if you're on an IDR plan, double-check that they're calculating your payment correctly based on your most recent income info. Sometimes they use outdated data which can mess up your payment amount. The whole system is so confusing and they definitely don't make it easy for us! Keep pushing back and don't accept vague answers - make them explain exactly why you owe money during a forbearance period.

ā¢This is really great advice! I never knew you could request a "loan status history" document - that sounds like exactly what I need to figure out where things went wrong. I'm definitely going to ask for that when I call. You're so right about not accepting vague answers too. I feel like every time I've called before, they just give me the runaround without actually explaining anything. Thanks for the tip about double-checking the IDR payment calculation too - I honestly have no idea if they're using the right income info or not. This whole mess is so stressful but it helps to know I'm not the only one dealing with MOHELA's chaos! š
