MOHELA loan confusion: Need help with deferment process and identifying nursing-specific loans
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my student loans and could use some advice. A couple months back, I was told to cancel my auto payments to enroll in some new deferment process. Now my payments are delinquent and I'm not sure what to do. Also, I need to get a breakdown of my consolidated loans from MOHELA. A scholarship committee might pay off some of my nursing loans, but they need to know which ones are specifically for nursing. Anyone been through something similar or know how to get this info?

Ugh, I feel you. The whole student loan system is such a mess rn. 🤦♀️ I had a similar issue with deferment. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call MOHELA directly. Be prepared to wait on hold forever. 2. Ask about the Biden admin's deferment program and how to enroll. 3. Explain your situation with the delinquent payments. They might be able to retroactively apply the deferment. 4. For the loan breakdown, specifically request a detailed summary showing which loans are for nursing. 5. If the phone rep can't help, ask to speak with a supervisor or the department that handles loan details. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

This is solid advice! 👍 I'd add: make sure to get everything in writing. These loan servicers can be slippery af

Have you tried logging into studentaid.gov? Sometimes you can find a breakdown of your loans there. Might save you a phone call.

I did check there, but it doesn't show which ones are specifically for nursing after the consolidation. Thanks tho!

Yeah, studentaid.gov can be hit or miss. I swear they make it confusing on purpose 🙄

Yo, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of hold time. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/kfgsWnbb8cU

I get it, but think about how much your time is worth. For me, not spending 3 hours on hold was totally worth it

Quick tip: If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try reaching out to MOHELA on Twitter. Sometimes their social media team can help or at least escalate your issue.

Have you considered reaching out to your school's financial aid office? They might be able to provide documentation about which loans were for your nursing program specifically.

That's a great idea! I hadn't thought of that. I'll give them a call tomorrow.
