When does NY unemployment release funds to Key Bank debit cards?

Been getting my NY unemployment benefits on a Key Bank card for the past 3 weeks. The timing seems totally random though? Sometimes the money shows up at midnight, sometimes not until late afternoon. Does anyone know what the actual schedule is for when Key Bank releases the funds after certification? I certified Sunday and still nothing showing on my card today (Tuesday). Getting nervous since I have rent due soon.

The standard release is 1-2 business days after certification, but Key Bank specifically tends to post deposits between 6-8am. However, I've noticed that if you certify very early Sunday morning, funds sometimes appear Monday. If you certify later on Sunday, it's usually Tuesday morning. Also, make sure your payment status shows 'released' in your NY.gov account before looking for it on your Key Bank card.

Thanks! Just checked and my payment status still says 'pending' in my account. That might explain it. Guess I'll keep checking.

key bank is THE WORST!!! i switched to direct deposit cause they kept randomly freezing my card for "fraud" when i was just buying groceries!! took 9 days to get my money one time

Yikes, that sounds awful! I'm definitely going to look into switching to direct deposit. Did it take long to set up?

Mine hits my Key Bank card Tuesday afternoons most weeks. But sometimes Wednesday morning if there's a holiday or system delays. I always certify Sunday night around 10pm.

I certified Sunday afternoon around 2pm. Wonder if certifying later would make it more consistent? Might try that next week.

If your payment is still pending after 3 days, you might want to call NYSDOL to check if there's an issue with your claim. Sometimes there are random holds they place that they don't notify you about. I had this happen last month and had to call to get it resolved. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it when you need to talk to someone urgently about missing payments.

Oh that's good to know. If it's not there by tomorrow I'll definitely need to call. Wait times are ridiculous so I'll check out that service. Thanks!

Does that service actually work? I tried calling unemployment like 50 times last month and never got through.

Yes, it worked for me twice now. They basically call on your behalf and transfer you once they get an agent. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Key Bank release schedule is typically: - Certify Sunday: Funds available Tuesday morning - Certify Monday: Funds available Wednesday morning - Waiting period: 1-2 business days after DOL releases payment However, system maintenance, holidays, high volume periods, and payment holds can all delay this timeline. If your NY.gov account shows 'pending' for more than 3 business days, there may be an issue requiring resolution with an agent. Note that 2025 processing times have been slightly longer than previous years due to DOL's new verification system.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown! That makes sense. I didn't know about the new verification system - maybe that's causing some delays too.

This happened to me a couple weeks ago!!! I was freaking out because I needed to pay my phone bill. Turns out my certification had an issue because I answered one of the questions wrong (about looking for work). I had to call and fix it. The money didn't show up on my Key Bank card until they fixed it. Did you answer all the certification questions correctly??

I think I answered everything right, but now I'm second-guessing myself. If it doesn't show up tomorrow I'll definitely call to check.

Yes! Their app is terrible. I use the website on my phone browser instead. Works better.

Just to update on some recent changes - in March 2025, NYSDOL implemented a new payment processing system that occasionally delays first-time payments by 24-48 hours longer than usual. This mostly affects new claims, but can sometimes impact existing claims if there was a break in your certification or if you recently updated any information. This could explain some of the inconsistency you're experiencing.

I did update my address about a month ago. I wonder if that's still affecting things. Really appreciate all this information!

UPDATE: Money finally hit my Key Bank card this morning (Wednesday). No idea why it was delayed but at least it came through! This system is so stressful when you're depending on the money.
