Need governor's office phone number for ny unemployment appeal that's been ignored
I filed an unemployment appeal back in October after getting denied benefits in September. It's now February and I STILL haven't heard anything from them. I've called the regular unemployment number like 30+ times - when I finally get through they just tell me to "keep waiting" and that they "can't do anything about appeals." I sent 5 follow-up emails through their contact form and got generic automated responses every time. My rent is coming due again and I'm completely out of savings after losing my job at that tech startup that downsized. I'm thinking my only option is to contact the governor's office directly to light a fire under someone. Has anyone successfully done this? What's the best number to reach someone who can actually help with unemployment appeals that are stuck in limbo?

The governor's office number is 518-474-8390. They also have an online contact form but who knows if anyone reads those. I've had better luck calling directly and being super persistent about your situation. Try calling early in the morning right when they open. Good luck!

•Thank you! Did you actually get somewhere when you called? Like did they help with your unemployment issue or just take a message?

•They took my info and someone called me back a week later. It didn't solve everything but at least got movement on my case.

•I tried that number and they just redirected me back to the regular unemployment line 🙄 total waste of time

After 2 months of getting nowhere with NY unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me through to an actual human at unemployment in like 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks! Once I talked to a real person, they found my appeal that had been sitting there and escalated it. Best money I've ever spent after all that frustration. Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds like a scam tbh. another company trying to profit off desperate people 🤔

•Not a scam at all! They literally just do the calling and waiting on hold FOR YOU, then connect you when a real agent picks up. Saved me hours of my life and I finally got my case resolved.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to get through for 3 weeks...

•It worked for me! They don't handle your claim or anything - they just get you past the impossible phone system so you can talk to an actual agent. Then you handle it yourself from there.

Try contacting your local state representative! I was in a similar situation (appeal sitting for 4 months!) and my assembly member's office was able to make some calls and get things moving. Google "NY state assembly member" plus your neighborhood to find yours.

The whole system is set up to make you give up. They WANT you to stop trying so they don't have to pay benefits. My advice? Document EVERYTHING. Every call, email, the person's name, date, time. Then when you do get through to someone important (governor's office, state rep, whoever), you can show them exactly how much the system has failed you.

There's actually an Unemployment Appeals Board that's separate from regular unemployment. Their number is 518-402-0205. I would try them directly rather than the governer's office. They're technically who handles appeals.

•Omg thank you! I didn't even know there was a separate board. Will definitely call them tomorrow morning.

Here's what worked for me with my stuck appeal: First, call the main unemployment line (888-209-8124) but instead of pressing options about existing claims, press the options for a NEW claim. Those agents usually have shorter wait times and while they might say they don't handle appeals, if you're nice sometimes they'll transfer you to someone who can help. Second, try the ombudsman's office at 888-209-8124 (press different options). Third, if still stuck, contact your STATE SENATOR (not assembly member). Mine got my appeal unstuck in 2 weeks after 3 months of nothing. Fourth, if all else fails, use Claimyr.com to get through to a live agent. They basically wait on hold for you then call you when someone picks up. It's the only reliable way I've found to get through the phone maze quickly. Don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating but persistence pays off.

•This is actually really good advice. I did the "pretend I'm filing a new claim" trick and got through to someone who helped.

•how did you find your state senator? is there a website that tells you which one is yours based on address?

•Yep! Go to nysenate.gov/find-my-senator and enter your address. Their offices deal with unemployment issues ALL THE TIME and usually have staff dedicated to it.

Check your mail carefully! My appeal notice came in an envelope that looked exactly like junk mail and I almost threw it away. The system is ridiculous.

Hey so I was in a very similar situation about 2 months ago. Appeal stuck forever, couldn't get anyone on the phone. I ended up sending a certified letter (yes, actual physical mail) to the Commissioner of Labor with all my details. Not sure if it was coincidence but my appeal was scheduled 2 weeks later. Worth a shot!

•Do you have the mailing address for the Commissioner? This sounds like a good idea

Former NY unemployment worker here. Appeals are completely backlogged right now due to staffing issues. The governor's office will just forward your info back to DOL. Your best bet is to call the main unemployment line early in the morning (like 7:59am right before they open) and specifically ask for a supervisor when you get through. Only supers can check the status of appeals in the system. Be polite but firm that you need this information.

•This is super helpful insider info, thanks for sharing! Do you know if there's any way to get prioritized if you're facing eviction?

Daniel Price
•Yes actually. If you're facing eviction, specifically tell them that when you call and ask them to note it in your file as a hardship case. It won't work miracles but it can move you up a bit in priority.

The NYC Bar Association has a free legal hotline that might be able to help: 212-626-7373. They helped my cousin with his appeal.
