Need governor's office number to escalate my NY unemployment claim that's been pending for 3 months
I've been trying to reach someone at the unemployment office since July. My claim has been pending for over 3 months now with no movement whatsoever. I've called the regular unemployment number like 40+ times, always get the same automated message saying high call volume then it hangs up on me. I've sent 6 messages through their online messaging system and gotten zero responses. My rent is now 2 months behind and my landlord is threatening eviction. I heard that calling the governor's office can sometimes help escalate your claim when you're getting nowhere with regular channels. Does anyone have that phone number or any other contact that might actually help? I'm desperate at this point - haven't received a single payment and running out of options.

I was in a similar situation last year. Waited 4 months with no movement on my claim! Try calling 518-474-8390 for the governor's office. When you call, be ready with all your info - claim number, dates you applied, list of all the times you've tried contacting DOL. Make it clear that you've exhausted all normal channels. The more specific you are about your attempts to resolve this through proper channels, the more likely they'll help. Good luck!

Thank you so much!!! I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning. Did they actually help you get your claim fixed when you called?

They took my info and said they'd forward it to a special dept at DOL. Got a call back from DOL 5 days later and my payments started the following week. Not instant but wayyy faster than waiting forever!

518-474-8390 doesn't work anymore, tried it last week and they just transfer you back to the same useless DOL number 🙄

Really? That sucks! Maybe they changed it recently. It worked for me about 6 months ago.

After weeks of getting nowhere with ny unemployment, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually worked! They called DOL for me, stayed on hold, and then connected me with an actual human agent. Talking to a real person got my claim unstuck in one day after being stuck for 2 months. Seriously the best decision I made - worth every penny to finally get my benefits flowing. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

It's 100% real. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. They just handle the hold time and connect you when a real person answers. You still talk to the agent yourself.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch. You pay them to wait on hold instead of you. Then when an agent picks up, they call you and connect you. Saved me literally days of my life.

I used this too! After 3 weeks of trying to get through myself, I got connected to a rep in about 2 hours. Finally got my backpay sorted out.

The official executive chamber number is 518-474-8390 but good luck getting anyone helpful. I tried calling 10+ times and either got voicemail or was told they "don't handle individual unemployment cases" 🤡

Try contacting your local state representative instead of the governor. They usually have dedicated staff that handles constituent services and can escalate things with DOL. Find yours here: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator

This is actually a great idea. I didn't think of contacting my state rep. I'll try both approaches.

I second this! My state assemblyman's office got my claim fixed in 2 weeks after I spent 3 months getting nowhere with DOL directly.

The entire NY unemployment system is broken beyond belief. I spent 5 months trying to get my claim fixed and ended up homeless because of it. The governor's office just refers you back to DOL, and DOL never picks up. It's a cruel joke. Your best bet is to contact a local news station - they HATE bad press and magically fix claims when a reporter starts asking questions.

This!!!! I emailed the consumer investigation team at ABC7 and suddenly got a call from a supervisor at DOL the next day. Coincidence? I think not!

That's actually brilliant. Which news station did you contact? And do you have contact info for their consumer team?

I didn't personally go the news route but have seen it work for others. Try Nina Pineda at 7 On Your Side or the NBC4 Better Get Baquero team.

Here's what worked for me with ny unemployment: I found my state senator's email (not the US senator) and sent a detailed email explaining my situation. Their office contacted DOL on my behalf and I got a call from a DOL supervisor within 48 hours. Don't waste time with the governor's office - they're swamped and won't prioritize individual cases. Go local!

Yep, state legislators actually care about helping constituents because you're a potential voter. Governor's office is too removed from day-to-day problems.

The whole system is designed to make u give up. Its not broken, its working EXACTLY how they want it to work. They make it impossible to get through, hope ppl just stop trying, and then they can keep the money. Been this way for years but got 100x worse since covid.

Facts 💯 They owe me $8,600 in back benefits and I'll probably never see a dime of it.

Not true. I got all my backpay eventually. The system is definitely broken, but it's not a conspiracy to keep your money. It's just incompetence and outdated technology.

Look I'm gonna give you the ACTUAL solution that worked for me after 6 months of hell with NYSDOL. You need to do all of these things simultaneously: 1) Call your state assembly member AND state senator (both offices). Send emails AND physical letters with your claim info. 2) Use claimyr.com to get through to an agent directly. Yes, you pay for it, but it works. I wasted hundreds of hours trying to call myself before discovering this service. 3) Send a formal complaint to the NY Department of Financial Services. They regulate insurance matters and unemployment falls under this umbrella. 4) Contact the Ombudsman office for NYSDOL: 1-800-662-1220 I did all four of these things in one week, and suddenly my 6-month frozen claim was processed and I received over $14,000 in backpay. Don't give up, and don't rely on just one method. Hit them from all directions. The squeaky wheel gets the grease in this broken system. Be persistent but polite with everyone you contact. Document EVERYTHING - names, dates, reference numbers from calls. Good luck!

Thank you for such a detailed plan! I'll start working on this today. That Claimyr service someone else mentioned sounds promising too if it can actually get me to a human.

I had success emailing the Commissioner of Labor directly. The email format is firstname.lastname@labor.ny.gov - just look up who the current commissioner is. Put "URGENT: Claim #XXXXX Pending for 90+ Days" in the subject line. Be brief, professional and include your contact info and claim number. Got a call back within 72 hours.

This actually works?? I'm shocked a commissioner would respond to a random email.

It's not the commissioner personally responding, but they have staff that monitors these emails and flags urgent cases. If your subject line clearly shows you've been waiting an excessive amount of time, it gets prioritized.

Hate to be that person but have you tried Twitter? Tweet at the DOL and the Governor with your issue (don't include personal info). Sometimes public shaming is the only way to get attention.

The system is intentionally understaffed and the phone system is designed to kick you off so their call stats look better. After trying for weeks, I used claimyr.com and got through to an agent who fixed everything in one call. Best decision ever, wish I'd known about it months earlier.

i'm looking at this claimyr thing right now... did you actually talk to a real DOL agent or was it some third-party service?

It's a real DOL agent. Claimyr just handles the calling and waiting on hold part. When an actual DOL agent picks up, you get a call connecting you directly to them. Then you handle your business as usual.

They don't promise to fix unemployment. They just get you through to an actual agent who can help you. Big difference. All they do is wait on hold so you don't have to.

Governor's office: 518-474-8390 DOL Commissioner's office: 518-457-9000 NY Attorney General (file a complaint): 800-771-7755 Hit them from all angles. The system is designed to wear you down.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I tried Claimyr as a last resort. Got connected to a DOL agent within 1.5 hours. Say what you want but it literally saved my sanity and got my claim fixed.

When all else fails... I hate to say it but filing for a hearing sometimes works. Go to your account and request a hearing about your claim. It forces them to look at your file. I waited 5 months of nothing, filed for a hearing, and suddenly got a call from DOL 3 days later apologizing for the delay and fixing my claim on the spot.
