Transcript shows weird 570 and 971 codes after acceptance on March 12 but no letters received - what's happening?

My return was accepted on March 12th and I've been waiting for my refund ever since. When I check WMR it just says "still being processed" with no bar. I finally got access to my transcript today and it shows a 570 (additional account action pending) and 971 (notice issued) with the same date of April 29th. It's already May 5th and I haven't received any letters or notices in the mail. My cycle code is 20221405. The weird thing is that transcript shows the refund amount I was expecting but with these hold codes. Does anyone know what this means or how long I might have to wait? Never had this happen before.

Natasha Volkov

Tax professional here. This is a common pattern we're seeing this year. The combination of 570 and 971 codes with the same date typically indicates that the IRS has found something they want to verify on your return, but it doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong. A few things to know: • The 570 code is a temporary hold on your refund • The 971 code means they've issued a notice • Notices can take 7-14 days to arrive after the date shown • Sometimes the IRS resolves issues before you even receive the notice Check your transcript again in a few days. If you see a 571 code (which resolves the 570) and/or an 846 code (refund issued), then the issue was resolved. If no notice arrives within 2 weeks of the April 29 date, you might want to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for long wait times.

Thank you so much! I'll keep checking my transcript. Is there any way to find out what the issue might be before I get the notice?

Unfortunately, the transcript doesn't tell you what specific issue triggered the review. It could be anything from a math error to identity verification to a mismatch with employer-reported information. The notice should explain exactly what's happening.

i had this EXACT situation last year. turns out they needed to verify some income i reported from a 1099. the super frustrating part was that i never got the notice they claimed to have sent! i finally had to call them to figure it out

That's what I'm worried about - that I'll never get the notice! How long did it take to resolve once you called?

took about 3 weeks after i called to get my refund. suuuuper annoying but at least it got resolved. if u don't get a notice by like May 15th definitely call them

I've been through this nightmare and honestly the best thing I did was use taxr.ai to actually understand my transcript. I was in the same position - got the 570/971 codes, no letter, and was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was happening. With taxr.ai I got a complete breakdown of my transcript that explained exactly what was happening in plain english and what my next steps should be. Saved me hours of googling and guessing! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript. You upload your transcript and it breaks down all the codes, explains what's happening with your return, tells you what to expect next, and gives personalized recommendations. It even told me exactly what day my refund would likely be issued and it was spot on!

Omg I just tried taxr.ai and I'm blown away! I've been staring at these codes for weeks trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. Taxr gave me more information in 2 minutes than I got in 3 hours of googling. EVERYONE with transcript issues needs to use this!! It even predicted when my refund would come! 🙌

Trust me the price is WORTH IT! I've been dealing with the IRS for 2 months with zero progress. This tool actually gave me clear answers in minutes instead of the endless runaround. Best money I've spent this year

Same boat, except I got the 570/971 codes back in February and STILL haven't received a notice. I was pulling my hair out til I found a way to actually talk to a real person at the IRS. Used this calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks before. The agent told me they needed verification for some income that didn't match their records. Fixed it right there on the phone and got my refund 2 weeks later.

is that one of those services where you have to pay just to talk to the irs? seems sketchy

Isabella Santos

Yeah you pay but honestly after wasting HOURS trying to get through myself, it was the best money I ever spent. The IRS phone system is completely broken - I tried calling 23 times and kept getting disconnected. Claimyr got me a callback from an actual IRS agent who fixed my issue.

I've heard about claimyr but was nervous to try it. does it actually work? did you have to give them any personal info?

They don't need any personal tax info - they just navigate the IRS phone system for you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks. Worked exactly as promised and saved me so much frustration.

The IRS is such a mess this year. I had these same codes and what happened was they reduced my refund by $42 because of a math error. But the system still shows the original refund amount until they process the adjustment. Could be something minor like that.

So frustrating! 🤬 I'm on week 13 with the same codes. Finally got my notice last week - turns out they needed me to verify identity. But the system is so backed up I can't get verified online and the phone lines are always busy. This system is broken beyond belief.

For identity verification - try calling exactly at 7am EST when they open. That's the only way I finally got through after trying for days.

I had this exact same issue. Used claimyr.com to get through to someone at IRS. Was absolutely worth it cause talking to an actual agent got my ID verified and refund released within 2 weeks.

If ur refund was accepted then you should be receiving communication from dem. i usually receive emails frm the IRS with updates. make sure to check ur spam folder to!!

0 coins

-

Sean O'Connor

The IRS does NOT email people about their tax returns or refunds. That's actually a common scam. They only communicate by postal mail for these types of notices.

Call them!!! Don't wait for the notice. I had the exact same situation and waited 6 weeks for a notice that never came. When I finally called, they told me they needed documentation I could have sent weeks earlier. Such a waste of time.

Your cycle code (20221405) actually tells you a lot. The first 4 digits (2022) is the year, the next digit (1) means it's processed on a weekly cycle (not daily), and the 405 means it was processed in the 5th week of IRS processing. Weekly accounts are updated on Fridays, so check your transcript again tomorrow and you might see changes.

after waiting 3 months for my refund last year, i finally broke down and used taxr.ai - it analyzed my transcript and told me exactly what was wrong (income verification issue) and what to do about it. saved me SO much stress. could have gotten my refund way earlier if i'd found it sooner! https://taxr.ai

Check if you claimed any credits like EIC or ACTC. Those automatically get extra scrutiny and can trigger these codes. Also check if you had unemployment compensation or marketplace insurance - those are common triggers for verification.

This is the most useless agency in the entire government. How can they put holds on your money without even telling you why? And then when you try to call it's impossible to get through. I'm dealing with this same exact issue for the second year in a row!

OP, mine was accepted on March 3, got 570/971 codes for April 15, still no notice as of May 8. Used claimyr.com to reach an agent yesterday cause I was tired of waiting. Found out they had a question about my W2 income and resolved it over the phone. Agent told me refund should be released within 2 weeks. Just FYI.

I had this happen. The 570 code always scares people, but sometimes it's nothing major. Mine was a simple math error they corrected themselves. The refund amount showed the original amount until they fully processed the correction. Ended up getting $124 less than originally expected, but it was processed without me having to do anything. Refund came about 3 weeks after these codes appeared.

0 coins

-

Oliver Schmidt

That would be the best case scenario. Did you ever receive the notice they said they sent?

Yeah got it about 2 weeks after the date on transcript. By then the refund was already being processed lol. Basically just explained they fixed my math error.

honestly whatever it costs is worth it compared to the stress of dealing with the IRS. my refund was over $3k and i was losing my mind waiting. taxr gave me actual answers instead of the cryptic codes.

I've worked in tax prep for 10 years. Here's what's likely happening: The IRS found a discrepancy or something that needs verification. With their current backlog, it can take 6-8 weeks from the time you see these codes until resolution if you just wait. If you're anxious to get your refund, call them at 1-800-829-1040 but prepare to wait 1-2 hours or get disconnected.

Early morning (7-8am EST) on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday tends to be slightly better. Mondays and Fridays are the worst. Also, the closer to the end of the month, the busier they get.

They're trying to catch fraud but it's just causing delays for everyone. My tax guy said they're flagging way more returns than usual for verification.

my theory is they're holding refunds longer to earn interest on the money 🤔 they do this every year but its getting worse

OP, if you look at your Account Transcript (not just the Return Transcript), do you see any Transaction Codes like 420 (audit) or 424 (examination/audit closed)? Those would tell you more about what's happening.

I only see the 570 and 971 codes, no audit codes thankfully! Just those two with the same April 29 date.

just check WMR every day. the day it changes from "still being processed" to "approved" means your refund is coming within a week. transcript updates are usually a day or two behind the WMR tool.
