Got 971 notice AND 570 hold on my tax transcript - multiple codes including 810 refund freeze - when will I receive the letter?

I checked my transcript yesterday and saw there's a 971 notice code dated 05/27/2025. I also have a 570 code from 04/25/2025 that shows my refund is on hold. I filed back in early April and my WMR tool has been stuck on 'still processing' for over a month now. Looking at my transcript in detail, I can see several codes: - 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding with date 04-15-2025 - 810 Refund freeze dated 01-31-2025 - 766 Credit to your account dated 04-15-2025 - Another 766 Credit to your account also dated 04-15-2025 - 768 Earned income credit dated 04-15-2025 - 570 Additional account action pending from 03-10-2025 - 971 Notice issued dated 02-17-2025 Does anyone know how long it usually takes to actually receive this notice in the mail? And what might it be about? My transcript shows several credits (766 codes) with a date of 06/15/2025, plus my EIC (768) and withholding credits. There's also that 810 freeze from 01-31-2025 that's concerning me. I'm really frustrated because I've been waiting since early April, and with all these codes showing up, I have no idea what's happening with my refund. The 570 "Additional account action pending" is especially worrying since it's been there for months now. Has anyone dealt with this combination of codes before and can tell me what to expect?

The 971 code simply means a notice or letter has been sent/will be sent to you. It typically takes 7-10 business days from the date on the transcript for you to receive the actual notice in the mail. Based on your codes, here's what's happening: - 570 code is an additional action pending on your account (refund hold) - 810 is a refund freeze which indicates they're reviewing something - Multiple 766 credits and 768 EIC with future dates means they've calculated your refund but haven't released it yet The most likely scenario is that your return has been flagged for review - probably due to the Earned Income Credit. The IRS routinely verifies EIC claims. The letter will explain what they need from you (if anything) or inform you about the delay. Check your mail carefully over the next week. If you don't receive anything within 2 weeks, you might want to call the IRS to find out what the notice is about.

Thank you for explaining! I was hopeing the notice would show up this week. I hate all this waiting.

0 coins

Is that true about EIC claims being reviewed more? I claimed it for the first time this year and I'm stuck in limbo too 😭

0 coins

Yes, EIC claims have a higher review rate. It's one of the most frequently audited tax credits because of historical issues with improper claims. Don't worry though - a review doesn't mean you did anything wrong!

0 coins

This is super helpful info. I have the exact same codes and was going nuts trying to figure it out!

0 coins

If you try calling the IRS good luck actually getting through lmao. I spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected 🙃

0 coins

the EXACT same thing happened to me! finally got thru using claimyr.com - it got me a callback from an actual agent who explained my delay reason

0 coins

I went through the same issue last month. Honestly, the best solution I found was using taxr.ai to actually understand what was happening with my transcript. Instead of guess work and trying to piece together what all those codes mean, it explained everything in plain English and gave me a timeline prediction. The tool literally read my transcript and told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when I'd likely receive it. Once I knew what was going on, my anxiety went wayyy down. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - it saved me so much time and confusion vs asking random people who might not know the full picture.

0 coins

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It analyzes your transcript and explains all the codes and what they mean specifically for your situation. It also gives you a personalized timeline and tells you if there's anything you need to do. So much better than trying to google every code and wondering if it applies to your specific case!

0 coins

Just tried it and WOW. Finally understand what's happening with my refund! This is exactly what I needed - why doesn't the IRS just explain things this clearly?? Everyone dealing with weird transcript codes needs to use this!

0 coins

another app trying to make money off people desperate to get their refunds...how is this any different from all the other 'solutions'?

0 coins

It's not just another app - it actually explains YOUR specific situation based on YOUR transcript. Saved me from calling the IRS 10 times and getting nowhere. But hey, if you prefer staying confused, that's your choice 🤷‍♀️

0 coins

is it free tho? seems sus

0 coins

Just tried it - worth every penny to finally understand wtf is happening with my taxes. Been pulling my hair out for weeks before this!

0 coins

So I was in the same boat last week - 971 code with no actual letter. Tried calling IRS and couldn't get through AT ALL. Then found this app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an IRS agent in like 20 minutes. The agent told me exactly what my notice was about (just verification for my address change) and released my refund on the spot! Seriously was the best money ive spent all year considering I was waiting on a hefty refund. Beats wasting hours on hold or waiting weeks for some vague letter.

0 coins

does this actually work? ive spent hours trying to call them myself

0 coins

Yes! It schedules a callback from the IRS so you don't have to wait on hold. Agent explained everything and fixed my issue in one call. After weeks of stress it was resolved in minutes.

0 coins

Hmm sounds suspiciously convenient. What's the catch? They ask for your SSN or something?

0 coins

No catch - it just navigates the IRS phone system and gets you in the callback queue. You talk directly to the IRS, not them. They just save you from the hold time hell.

0 coins

Thanks for this suggestion. I might try it if my notice doesn't arrive soon.

0 coins

Real talk - after 3 failed attempts calling IRS myself, I used this last tax season when I had a similar issue with a freeze code. Actually worked! Getting that callback was so satisfying after wasting hours on unsuccessful calls 😂

0 coins

I had a 971 code show up and got the notice in the mail about 8 days later. Mine was about them adjusting my refund amount (they actually increased it lol) so not all 971 notices are bad news!

0 coins

That gives me some hope! What was ur 570 date compared to ur 971 date? Mine are about 6 weeks apart

0 coins

My 570 and 971 were only about 1 week apart, so yours being 6 weeks apart might mean something different. The good news is once you get the notice, at least you'll know what's going on!

0 coins

The IRS is such a joke. They expect us to pay on time but take FOREVER to send refunds. I've been waiting 4 months for mine with the same codes. Called 14 times and can't get a human on the line. Then they'll probably charge ME interest if I'm late next year 🤡

0 coins

fr they're such hypocrites. "pay us immediately or face penalties" but then "oh we'll get to your refund whenever we feel like it" 🙄

0 coins

Pro tip - if you owe they take payment immediately. If they owe you, well... you might get it by Christmas 😂

0 coins

exactly! and they wonder why people hate dealing with taxes so much. its the double standard for me

0 coins

i waited 3 weeks for my 971 notice... turned out they just wanted verification of my identity. once i did the ID verify online my refund was released after like 9 days. check if you can do ID verify on the irs website maybe thats all they need

0 coins

Those codes typically mean you're under review. Most likely for the EIC based on what you've posted. The 971 notice usually arrives within 5-7 days of the date on your transcript. The 810 freeze plus the 570 pending action definitely indicates they're verifying something before releasing your refund.

0 coins

Thank you! That makes sense. I hope its just verification and not an audit 😰

0 coins

Ugh I'm in this exact situation too. Transcript updated with a 971 code yesterday (5/27) and I'm anxiously checking my mail every day. From what I've read online, the 810 freeze is the worst because it means a manual review. Some people wait months. I'm so fedup with the IRS rn

0 coins

Let me know when u get ur notice! I'll update this post when I get mine too so others know how long it takes

0 coins

Will do! Hopefully we both get good news soon 🤞

0 coins

Sometimes the notices never even arrive lmao. I had a 971 code in March and never got anything in the mail. Refund eventually processed after 2 months with no explanation. The IRS works in mysterious ways 💅

0 coins

Ok hear me out - check for electronic notices in your IRS online account. Login to the IRS website (if you have an account) and check the 'messages' or 'notices' section. Sometimes they send electronic versions of the notices that arrive before the paper mail. not many ppl know about this 👀

0 coins

I tried that already but nothing there unfortunately

0 coins

This is actually good advice tho. I found my CP12 notice online before it ever arrived in the mail. Saved me a week of wondering!

0 coins

with those specific codes (especially 810, 570, 971 combo) its most likely an income verification. they're probably checking if your W2 income matches whats reported. shouldn't be anything to worry about unless you made a mistake

0 coins

last year I had a similar situation, it took about 2 weeks to get the notice in the mail after it showed up on transcript. ended up being absolutely nothing - just them telling me they were holding my refund a bit longer for "extra verification" 🙄 got the money 3 weeks after that with no further contact.

0 coins

Thats actually reassuring. Sometimes no news is good news with the IRS!

0 coins

want some honest advice? CALL THEM. stop waiting around. ive seen these exact codes before and it could be anything from identity verification to a simple math correction. but you wont know until you talk to someone or get that notice. and waiting for mail could take forever.

0 coins

I've tried calling so many times but can't get through... any tips?

0 coins

honestly the only way i finally got through was using this service called claimyr.com - its not free but it saved me HOURS of hold time and my sanity. got a callback from the IRS within 45 mins.

0 coins

971 is just saying they sent or are gonna send a letter. The real issue is the 570 (pending action) and 810 (refund freeze) codes. Those mean they have questions and are reviewing something. The 971 letter will explain what they need from you. My bet is they want more info on your EIC claim since theres a 768 code. They're picky about that one.

0 coins

I just went through this! Got a 971 on my transcript around 5/12 and got the letter on 5/20. It was a CP05 notice saying they're reviewing my return and I don't need to do anything unless they ask for more info. Refund released 2 weeks after that.

0 coins

Same, got a CP05 a few weeks back. So annoying they make us wait with no explanation!

0 coins

Tip for anyone in this boat: download the IRS2Go app and check that instead of the website. Sometimes it updates faster than the website with more info. Also make sure your mail is secure - i had a notice stolen once and had no idea until i called!

Mei Liu

you know what helped me understand my transcript when I was in this situation? i used taxr.ai and it told me EXACTLY what my codes meant and when i could expect action. it noticed patterns in my transcript i would have missed. saved me so much anxiety. seriously check out https://taxr.ai

0 coins

I'm sick of seeing these ads everywhere. Does this actually work or is it just scraping info from IRS website that we can find ourselves?

0 coins

Mei Liu

It's not just scraping info - it analyzes YOUR specific transcript and tells you what's happening in YOUR case. Saved me from calling the IRS again and again. The personalized timeline was spot on for me - predicted my refund release within 2 days of when it actually happened.

0 coins

Ok I just tried it for my 971/570 situation and WOW. This explained my issue way better than any forum post. It even caught a pattern I missed that indicates my refund should be released next cycle. Thanks for sharing this!

0 coins

The IRS is behind on EVERYTHING this year. 971 usually means they adjusted something or need more info. But honestly with the 810 freeze you might be waiting a while. My brother had the same codes and it took 4 months to resolve 🥴

0 coins

Here's a tip nobody tells you: if you have those codes, especially 570 and 810, there's a good chance they just need to verify your income or identity. Instead of waiting for the letter, be proactive and do ID verification on irs.gov - search for "ID verify" on their site. Might speed things up!

0 coins

thank you! ill try that today

0 coins

I've been in your exact situation before! The 971 notice usually arrives within 7-10 business days of the date shown on your transcript. Given that yours is dated 02/17/2025, you should be getting it very soon if you haven't already. The combination of codes you're seeing - especially the 570 hold, 810 freeze, and 971 notice - typically indicates they're doing a manual review of your return. Since you have a 768 EIC code, there's a good chance they're verifying your Earned Income Credit eligibility, which is one of the most commonly reviewed credits. The good news is that your transcript shows multiple 766 credits with future dates, which means they've already calculated your refund amount - they just haven't released it yet while they complete their review. My advice: be patient for the letter (it's coming!), and once you get it, follow the instructions exactly. If it's just a standard review notice like CP05, you might not need to do anything except wait. If they need documentation, respond promptly to avoid further delays. Don't panic - this is more common than you think, especially with EIC claims. The review process is frustrating but usually resolves within 60-90 days once they get what they need.

0 coins

This is really helpful, thank you! I'm feeling a bit more optimistic now. The 60-90 day timeline is actually better than what I was expecting after reading some horror stories online. I'll keep checking my mail and try to be patient. It's just frustrating when you're depending on that refund money, you know?

0 coins

I've been through this exact scenario! Had a 971 code show up on my transcript and was checking the mail obsessively every day. The notice arrived about 9 days after the transcript date, so you should see it very soon. Looking at your codes, the 810 freeze combined with the 570 hold usually means they're doing income verification or checking your EIC eligibility. The fact that you have future-dated 766 credits is actually a good sign - it means they've processed your return and calculated your refund, they're just holding it during the review. One thing that helped me was setting up Informed Delivery with USPS so I could see what mail was coming each day. At least then I wasn't wondering if today would be the day! The waiting is absolutely brutal, but try not to stress too much. Most of these reviews are routine and resolve without you having to do anything except wait. Keep us updated when you get your notice - we're all rooting for you!

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I just signed up for Informed Delivery after reading your suggestion - that's such a smart idea. At least now I'll know if there's mail coming instead of running to the mailbox multiple times a day like a crazy person 😅 It really does help to know that the future-dated 766 credits are a good sign. I was so focused on the scary 810 freeze code that I didn't realize the other codes were actually positive indicators. Thanks for the encouragement - I'll definitely update once I get the notice!

0 coins

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in March and have been stuck with a 570 hold and 810 freeze for what feels like forever. Just got my 971 code yesterday (dated 05/28/2025) so I'm anxiously waiting for that letter too. What's really driving me crazy is that my transcript shows I have credits sitting there ready to go - I can see the 766 codes with future dates just like yours. It's like they've done all the math but just won't hit the "send refund" button until whatever review they're doing is complete. I've been checking my mail obsessively and even signed up for Informed Delivery after reading these comments (great suggestion btw!). The waiting is honestly the worst part because you have no idea if it's going to be a simple "we're reviewing your return, sit tight" letter or something that requires action on your part. Fingers crossed we both get our notices soon and they're the good kind that just say "thanks for your patience, money's coming!" rather than asking for a bunch of documentation. This whole process really makes you appreciate how much anxiety the IRS can cause with their cryptic codes and snail-pace communication.

0 coins

I feel your pain! The waiting really is the absolute worst part of this whole process. It's like they design it to maximize anxiety with those mysterious codes and zero communication about timelines. I've been in the same boat with my 971 code from 02/17 and still no letter - but reading everyone's experiences here is actually making me feel less alone in this mess. At least we know we're not the only ones dealing with the IRS bureaucracy black hole! Hopefully both our letters show up this week and it's just routine verification stuff. The fact that we both have those 766 credits sitting there gives me hope that the hard work is done and they just need to finish whatever review process they're doing. Hang in there! 🤞

0 coins

I'm in almost the exact same situation and this thread has been so helpful! I filed in early April too and have been stuck with the dreaded 570/810 combo on my transcript. Got my 971 code about a week ago and have been obsessively checking my mail ever since. What's giving me some hope after reading through all these responses is that most people seem to get their notices within 7-10 days, and a lot of the time it's just routine verification stuff - especially for EIC claims like we both have. The fact that your transcript shows those future-dated 766 credits means they've already calculated your refund amount, which is actually a good sign! I also signed up for Informed Delivery after seeing it mentioned here - game changer for reducing the daily mailbox anxiety! At least now I know when something's coming instead of wondering all day. The waiting absolutely sucks but it sounds like most of these reviews resolve within a couple months once they finish whatever verification they're doing. Keeping my fingers crossed that both our letters arrive soon and it's just a standard "we're reviewing your return, hang tight" notice rather than anything requiring documentation. This whole process really makes you appreciate how stressful dealing with the IRS can be!

0 coins

I'm dealing with the exact same codes right now! Filed in March and have been stuck with that 570/810 combo for months. Just got my 971 code on my transcript a few days ago (dated 05/26/2025) so I'm in the same anxious waiting period for the actual notice to arrive. What's been helping me cope is remembering that the 766 credits with future dates on your transcript are actually a positive sign - it means they've already processed your return and calculated your refund, they're just holding it during whatever review they're doing. The EIC verification makes total sense given your 768 code. I set up USPS Informed Delivery after reading the suggestions here and it's been a lifesaver for reducing the daily mailbox anxiety! At least now I know what's coming instead of making multiple trips to check. From everything I've read in this community, most people get their 971 notices within 7-10 business days of the transcript date, and the majority end up being routine review letters that don't require any action from you. The waiting absolutely sucks but try to stay positive - sounds like we're both in the final stretch of this process!

0 coins

Thank you for sharing your experience! It really helps to know I'm not alone in this situation. The USPS Informed Delivery tip is brilliant - I just signed up after reading about it multiple times in this thread. You're right that those 766 credits are probably a good sign that the processing is mostly done. I'm trying to stay patient but when you're depending on that refund money it's so hard! Hopefully we both get our notices this week and can finally get some clarity on what's happening. This whole process really shows how much the IRS needs to improve their communication with taxpayers.
