$4,331 Refund Stuck with 570/971 Codes - EIC of $3,090 on Hold Since April 17

I just checked my transcript and I'm concerned about what I'm seeing. There's a 570 code dated 04-18-2023 showing "Additional account action pending" and a 971 notice dated 04-25-2023 coming. My refund includes EIC of $2,090.00 and the account balance shows -$3,331.00 but nothing is moving. Here's what my transcript shows: --- ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT --- ACCOUNT BALANCE: -3,331.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Apr. 18, 2023 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Apr. 18, 2023 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): -3,331.00 INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED: EXEMPTIONS: 03 FILING STATUS: Single ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: 7,739.00 TAXABLE INCOME: 0.00 TAX PER RETURN: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: 0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: 0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: 0.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) Apr. 15, 2023 PROCESSING DATE Apr. 18, 2023 TRANSACTIONS CODE | EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION | CYCLE | DATE | AMOUNT 150 | Tax return filed | 20231305 | 04-18-2023 | $0.00 76221-472-79638-3 806 | W-2 or 1099 withholding | 04-16-2023 | -$555.00 766 | Credit to your account | 04-16-2023 | -$686.00 768 | Earned income credit | 04-16-2023 | -$2,090.00 570 | Additional account action pending | 04-18-2023 | $0.00 971 | Notice issued | 04-25-2023 | $0.00 Looking at the processing dates, my return was processed on April 18, 2023 (cycle 20231305), but everything seems to be stuck. The account balance plus accruals still shows -$3,331.00 with $0.00 in accrued interest and penalties as of Apr. 18, 2023. My transcript shows withholding of $555.00 and another credit of $686.00. My AGI is only $7,739.00 with taxable income of $0.00, filing as Single with 3 exemptions. Has anyone gone through this or know what these codes mean? Really worried about why my refund isn't moving when all the credits and withholding add up to $3,331.00 ($555 withholding + $686 credit + $2,090 EIC). The transcript says "This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data" at the bottom, so I know this is official information. I'm just stuck trying to understand what the 570 and 971 codes mean and why my refund seems to be held up.

The transcript shows a delayed refund situation typical of EIC verification. Your total expected refund of $4,331.00 breaks down into three components: $455.00 in withholding from W-2/1099, a $786.00 credit, and $3,090.00 in Earned Income Credit (EIC). The transaction codes tell an important story: While your return was processed on April 17, 2023 (cycle 20231305), code 570 indicates the IRS has temporarily frozen your refund for review. This is followed by a 971 code dated April 24, 2023, meaning they're sending you a notice explaining the delay. Your financial details show a very low AGI of $7,739.00 with zero taxable income, filing as Single with 3 exemptions. This combination, especially with a significant EIC claim, often triggers additional verification by the IRS. The fact that there are $0.00 penalties and interest accruals suggests this is a routine review rather than a compliance issue. The negative account balance of -$4,331.00 represents your pending refund amount, which perfectly matches the sum of your credits ($455 + $786 + $3,090). Watch your mail for the notice referenced by code 971 - it will explain what additional information, if any, the IRS needs to process your refund.

Thank you! Any idea how long these reviews usually take? Getting worried since I really need this money 😓

Generally 30-60 days, but could be faster. Keep an eye on your mail for that 971 notice, it'll explain exactly what they need.

Hey! Instead of playing detective with these codes, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your refund. It's only $1 and way better than guessing. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Check your wage and income transcript too. Sometimes they hold it if the W2 info hasn't been processed yet.

The notice will probably ask for verification of your income for EIC. Had the same thing happen last year, took about 6 weeks total.
