DSS system says new phone number already in use - How to update?
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble updating my phone number for my benefits. I just got a new number last week, and when I tried to update it online, the system said it was already in use. I haven't had any previous accounts or applications with this number, and I haven't received any notifications about my benefits. Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do when I talk to the agent?

Ugh, their system is always messed up 🙄 I had a similar issue when I changed my address. You'll probably have to call and explain the situation to an agent. Be prepared to wait on hold for like 3 hours tho lol

•3 hours? You got lucky! I was on hold for 5 hours last time I called 😭

•Pro tip: call right when they open. I usually get through in under an hour that way.

•Good idea! What time do they open?

•I think it's 8 AM, but double-check on their website to be sure.

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting for hours. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of waiting. Totally worth the $20 imo.

•How long did it take for them to call you back?

•It took about 2 hours for me, but I've heard it can vary depending on how busy they are. Still better than being stuck on hold yourself!

This happened to me last year. Turns out someone had used my new number for their account by mistake. When you talk to the agent, ask them to check if theres any mix-up with account numbers. They might need to manually override it in there system.

Have you tried updating your info through the mobile app? Sometimes it works better than the website. Worth a shot before you spend hours on the phone 🤷♂️

•I didn't even know there was an app! I'll give that a try, thanks!

•The app is trash tbh. Always crashes when I try to do anything important 🙄

Here's what you need to do when you finally get through to an agent: 1. Explain that you recently got a new phone number (give them the exact date if possible). 2. Tell them you tried to update it online but got an error saying it was already in use. 3. Emphasize that you've never used this number for any previous accounts or applications. 4. Ask them to check if there's been a mix-up or if the number is incorrectly associated with another account. 5. Request that they manually update your phone number in the system. 6. If they say they can't do it, ask to speak with a supervisor. 7. Make sure to get a confirmation number or some kind of written proof that your number has been updated. 8. After the call, try logging in again to verify the change. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
