How to find unemployment W2 from Washington ESD - can't locate mine anywhere

I received unemployment benefits throughout 2024 but I can't find my 1099-G tax form anywhere. I thought Washington ESD was supposed to mail it to me by January 31st but nothing has arrived. I need it to file my taxes but I'm not sure how to get a copy. Has anyone else had trouble finding their unemployment tax form from Washington ESD? I checked my SecureAccess Washington account but don't see it there either.

The form you're looking for is called a 1099-G, not a W2. Washington ESD should have mailed it to your last known address. You can also access it through your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account under the tax documents section. If you moved recently and didn't update your address, that could be why you haven't received it.

Oh right, 1099-G not W2. I did move last year but I thought I updated my address. Let me check the tax documents section in my SAW account.

Make sure you're logged into the right account. I had two different accounts somehow and was looking in the wrong one for months.

I had the same problem last year. Washington ESD was really behind on sending out the 1099-G forms. You can request a duplicate through your online account or call them directly. Just be prepared for long wait times on the phone.

0 coins

How long did it take when you called? I've been trying to get through for days but keep getting disconnected.

0 coins

Took me about 3 hours of calling before I got through. Try calling right when they open at 8am.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to try Claimyr. I used it last month when I needed to speak with someone about my claim status. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents without waiting on hold. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Is that legit? I've never heard of paying someone to help you call a government office.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Check your spam folder too! Mine ended up there somehow and I almost missed it. Also make sure Washington ESD has your current email address in their system.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll check spam. I don't think they have my email though, I always got paper mail from them.

For future reference, you can also request to receive your 1099-G electronically through your SAW account. It's faster and more reliable than waiting for mail. The electronic version is usually available by mid-January.

0 coins

How do you set that up? I want to make sure I don't have this problem next year.

0 coins

Log into your SAW account, go to Profile settings, then Document Delivery Preferences. You can choose electronic delivery for tax documents there.

0 coins

This is so frustrating! The IRS deadline doesn't change just because Washington ESD is slow with their paperwork. I'm in the same boat - no 1099-G received and can't get through on the phone.

0 coins

You can actually file your taxes without the 1099-G if you know how much you received. Just keep records of the unemployment payments you got throughout the year.

0 coins

Really? I thought you had to have the actual form. How do you know what to put for the tax withholding amount?

0 coins

I finally got through to Washington ESD about this yesterday using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The agent told me they had an issue with their mailing system in January and some 1099-G forms didn't go out. They're working on getting duplicates sent out but it might take another few weeks.

0 coins

That's helpful to know! So it's not just me. Did they say anything about electronic copies being available sooner?

0 coins

She said electronic copies should be available in SAW accounts by now, but if you're not seeing it there might be a technical issue. They can email you a copy if you provide your email address.

0 coins

Same issue here. I moved twice last year so I'm not surprised mine got lost in the mail. Going to try the electronic option through my SAW account.

0 coins

Make sure you updated your address with Washington ESD each time you moved. I forgot to do that once and it caused all sorts of problems.

PSA: If you received unemployment benefits, you DO need to report it on your taxes. The 1099-G shows how much you received and any taxes that were withheld. Don't ignore it just because the form is late.

0 coins

This is important! I know someone who didn't report their unemployment income and got in trouble with the IRS later.

0 coins

Wait, unemployment is taxable? I thought it was just assistance money.

0 coins

Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You should have had the option to have taxes withheld when you filed your weekly claims.

I got mine in the mail last week, but it was sent to an old address. Luckily my landlord forwarded it to me. The date on it shows it was mailed in late January, so they are going out, just slowly.

0 coins

That gives me hope! I'll check with my old apartment complex to see if they have any mail for me.

You can also call the IRS if you really can't get your 1099-G in time. They have procedures for filing without all your tax documents, but you'll need to be able to explain what happened.

0 coins

The IRS is probably even harder to reach than Washington ESD these days.

0 coins

True, but they do have an online chat option during tax season that's sometimes faster than calling.

0 coins

Update: I finally found mine in my SAW account! It was under 'Tax Documents' but I had to scroll down past other forms to see it. Thanks everyone for the help!

0 coins

Awesome! I'm going to check my account again right now.

0 coins

Great news! I should probably check mine too instead of waiting for the mail.

0 coins

For anyone still having trouble, I used Claimyr again today to get through to Washington ESD about a missing 1099-G. The agent was able to email me a copy immediately. Much faster than waiting for mail or trying to navigate the website.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I'm desperate but don't want to spend a fortune.

0 coins

It's worth it for the time savings. Check their website at claimyr.com for current pricing. They have that demo video too that explains everything.

0 coins

Just a heads up - if you're using TurboTax or similar software, you can usually import your 1099-G directly from the IRS database even if you don't have the physical form. Might be easier than trying to get it from Washington ESD.

0 coins

That's a good point. Most tax software can pull that information automatically now.

0 coins

I'm still waiting for mine too. This is ridiculous - it's almost March and they still haven't sent out all the tax forms. How are we supposed to file our taxes on time?

0 coins

You can file for an extension if you need more time. But honestly, the electronic version through SAW is probably your best bet at this point.

0 coins

I tried that but my SAW account says there are no tax documents available. I think there's a glitch in their system.

0 coins

SUCCESS! I finally got through to Washington ESD (took 4 hours of calling) and they confirmed my 1099-G was sent to my old address. The agent updated my address and emailed me a copy within 10 minutes. Persistence pays off!

0 coins

Congratulations! That gives me hope. I'm going to keep trying to call them.

0 coins

4 hours? That's insane. This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to save people from this kind of frustration.

Final update from me: I ended up using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD about my missing 1099-G. The whole process took about 20 minutes and the agent emailed me the form immediately. Wish I had done this weeks ago instead of trying to call myself repeatedly. Sometimes you just have to accept that the system is broken and find a workaround.

0 coins

Thanks for the update! I think I'm going to try that service too. This has been way too stressful.

0 coins

Good to know it worked for you. I might need to try that for other Washington ESD issues I've been having.
