When does Washington ESD send out tax forms for unemployment benefits?
I received unemployment benefits for most of 2024 and I'm starting to think about taxes. Does anyone know when Washington ESD typically sends out the 1099-G forms? I want to make sure I get mine so I can file my taxes on time. Also, do they mail them or are they available online through the SecureAccess Washington portal?

They usually mail 1099-G forms by the end of January. You should receive yours by early February at the latest. They're also available online through your SAW account if you need to access them sooner.

•Good to know! I'll check my SAW account in a few weeks if I don't get anything in the mail.

•Yeah I got mine last year around January 28th, so pretty much right at the deadline.

Question about this - do they send forms even if you had taxes withheld from your benefits? I elected to have 10% taken out each week.

•Yes, you'll still get a 1099-G showing the total amount you received and how much was withheld for taxes. You need both pieces of information for your tax return.

•Makes sense, thanks for clarifying that!

I'm still waiting on mine from last year actually... been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks but can never get through. Anyone else having this problem?

•I had the same issue trying to reach them about my 1099-G. Ended up using claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent. It's a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and get connected. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that before but might be worth trying. I'm getting desperate at this point.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle the calling and waiting for you then connect you when an agent picks up.

Pro tip - if you need your 1099-G urgently, you can often access it through your online account before the physical copy arrives. Just log into SecureAccess Washington and look under your unemployment documents.

•That's really helpful! I'll bookmark that for when tax season gets here.

•Wish I'd known this last year when I was scrambling to find mine right before the tax deadline...

Just a heads up - make sure your address is updated with Washington ESD if you moved during the year. I almost missed mine because it got sent to my old place.

•Good point! I did move in November so I should probably double check that.

•Yeah definitely update it ASAP. You can do it through your SAW account pretty easily.

•How long does it take for the address change to go through? I just updated mine last week.

Does anyone know if there's a difference in timing between regular UI and other programs? I was on standby for part of the year.

Aisha Abdullah
•All unemployment benefits get reported on the same 1099-G form regardless of the program type. Standby, regular UI, it all goes on one form with the total amount.

•Okay cool, so I just need to wait for one form then.

Ugh I'm dreading tax season... unemployment benefits are taxable income right? This is my first time dealing with this.

•Yes, unemployment benefits are considered taxable income at the federal level. Washington state doesn't have an income tax so you don't worry about state taxes, but you'll need to report it on your federal return.

•Well that's something at least! Thanks for the info.

•If you didn't have taxes withheld you might want to set aside some money for when you file. I learned that the hard way...

This might be a dumb question but what if I only received benefits for like 2 weeks? Do they still send a form?
0 coins
Aisha Abdullah
•Yes, they send a 1099-G for any amount of benefits received during the tax year, even if it was just a few weeks.

•Okay good to know, I'll watch for it then.

Last year mine came on January 31st, literally the last possible day. I was starting to panic thinking they forgot about me lol

•Same here! I think they send them out in batches throughout January.

•That makes me feel better about waiting. I was worried something was wrong if I didn't get it by mid-January.

For anyone who needs to reach Washington ESD about tax forms or anything else, I second the recommendation for that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it myself when I had questions about my benefit amounts on my 1099-G and got through to someone within an hour instead of calling all day.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•It's pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves you. Way less frustrating than spending all day hitting redial.

Word of warning - if you had an overpayment or any issues with your claim during the year, make sure the amounts on your 1099-G are correct. I had to dispute mine last year because they included benefits I had to pay back.

•Oh wow, I never thought about that. How do you dispute a 1099-G if the amounts are wrong?

StormChaser
•You have to contact Washington ESD directly to get a corrected form issued. It's a pain but necessary for accurate tax filing.

Is there a way to get an electronic copy emailed instead of waiting for mail? I'm traveling for work and won't be home much in February.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•Not emailed directly, but you can download it from your SecureAccess Washington account once it's available. That's usually faster than waiting for mail anyway.

•Perfect, that'll work great for my situation. Thanks!

Just want to add that if you're doing your own taxes, make sure you know which box on your tax form to put the unemployment income. It's not the same place as regular wages.

•Good reminder! It goes on line 7 of the 1040 form if anyone's wondering.

Does the 1099-G show if you had any child support or other garnishments taken out of your benefits?
0 coins
Aisha Abdullah
•The 1099-G typically shows the gross amount you received before any garnishments. Garnished amounts usually aren't shown on the form since you didn't actually receive that money.

•That makes sense, thanks for explaining that.

Anyone know if there's a way to get your 1099-G faster if you need it for early tax filing? My tax preparer wants to get started ASAP.

•The online version through SAW is usually available before the mailed copy arrives. That might be your best bet for early filing.

•You could also try calling Washington ESD to see if they can expedite it, though good luck getting through without using something like Claimyr to help with the connection.

This thread is super helpful! I've been stressed about tax season since this was my first year on unemployment. Sounds like I just need to be patient and wait for the form to arrive.

•Same here! Glad I'm not the only one who was worried about the timing.

•Yeah this is way more straightforward than I thought it would be.

One more thing to remember - keep a copy of your 1099-G with your tax records. You'll need it if there are ever any questions about your filing.
