When does Washington ESD send out 1099-G forms for unemployment benefits?
I received unemployment benefits throughout 2024 and I'm starting to prepare my taxes. When should I expect to receive my 1099-G form from Washington ESD? I know they're supposed to send them out by January 31st but I haven't gotten mine yet and it's already mid-January. Should I be worried or do they usually come closer to the deadline? I need to know how much I received in benefits for my tax return.

Washington ESD typically sends out 1099-G forms by January 31st each year. They usually mail them in batches starting around mid-January, so you should receive yours within the next couple weeks. You can also access your 1099-G online through your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you need it sooner.

•Thanks! I didn't know I could access it online. I'll check my SAW account right now.

•Yes the online version is available usually a few days before the mailed copies go out. Very convenient for early tax filers.

I'm in the same boat - waiting for my 1099-G from Washington ESD. Last year mine came on January 28th so they definitely cut it close to the deadline. The waiting is always stressful when you're trying to get your taxes done early.

•At least I'm not the only one waiting! I was starting to think something was wrong with my address or something.

•Same here, still waiting. I called Washington ESD to ask about it but couldn't get through to anyone. The phone lines are always so busy.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about your 1099-G or any other issues, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It's been really helpful for getting answers when the phone lines are jammed.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Does it actually work better than calling directly?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was able to get through and verify some information about my claim that I couldn't figure out online. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I'll have to check that out. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about a different issue.

Just wanted to add that if you moved during 2024, make sure Washington ESD has your current address on file. I had to update mine last year and almost missed getting my 1099-G because it went to my old address.

•Good point! I did move in November. I should double-check that my address is updated in my account.

•How do you update your address with Washington ESD? Through the same SAW account?

Christian Burns
•Yes, you can update it through your SAW account or by calling them, though calling is usually more difficult.

For anyone wondering about the tax implications - unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level. Washington state doesn't have income tax so you don't need to worry about state taxes on it. Just make sure you report the full amount on your federal return.

•Wait, I thought unemployment wasn't taxable? This is news to me.

•It's definitely taxable federally. A lot of people don't realize this and get surprised at tax time. If you didn't have taxes withheld from your benefits, you might owe money.

•That's correct. You can elect to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits when you file your claims, but many people choose not to and then deal with it at tax time.

Does anyone know if the 1099-G shows the gross amount or net amount after any taxes that were withheld?
0 coins
Kiara Greene
•It shows the gross amount - the total benefits you received before any withholding. If you had taxes withheld, that will be shown separately on the form.

•Thanks, that makes sense. I had 10% withheld so I wanted to make sure I understood what number to use.

Ugh I hate tax season. Between waiting for my 1099-G from Washington ESD and all my other tax documents, it's so stressful. Why can't they just get everything out earlier?

•I feel you! I'm always anxious about getting all my documents in time to file early.

•At least Washington ESD is usually pretty good about meeting the January 31st deadline. Some other agencies are worse.

Quick question - if I only received unemployment for part of the year, will I still get a 1099-G?

Kiara Greene
•Yes, you'll receive a 1099-G regardless of how long you received benefits. Even if it was just for a few weeks, Washington ESD will send you the form.

•Good to know, thanks! I was only on unemployment for about 6 weeks so I wasn't sure.

For what it's worth, I got mine yesterday in the mail. So they are definitely going out now. Check your mailbox over the next few days!

I'm still waiting for mine too. Last year I had to call Washington ESD in February because mine never came and they had to reissue it. Hopefully that doesn't happen again this year.

•That's frustrating! Did they send it out quickly once you called?

•It took about a week after I called, but getting through to someone was the hard part. That's why I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier if I have issues this year.

Just a heads up - if you don't receive your 1099-G by February 15th, you should definitely contact Washington ESD. They're required to provide it and can reissue it if there was a problem with the original mailing.

•Good to know there's a specific timeframe to wait. I'll mark my calendar.

•Yeah, don't wait too long or it'll delay your tax filing. Better to call sooner rather than later.

I've been checking my SAW account daily and my 1099-G just appeared online this morning! So they're definitely updating the online versions now even if the mail hasn't arrived yet.

For anyone who's new to this - you can also contact Washington ESD if there are any errors on your 1099-G. Sometimes they have incorrect amounts or missing information that needs to be corrected before you file your taxes.

Payton Black
•How would you know if there's an error? Do you just compare it to your payment history?
0 coins
Angel Campbell
•Exactly - check it against your payment history in your SAW account. The amounts should match up with what you actually received.

One more thing - if you had unemployment benefits from multiple states in 2024, you'll need to wait for 1099-G forms from each state. Washington ESD will only send you the form for benefits received from Washington state.

Summer Green
•Good point! I moved to Washington from Oregon mid-year so I'll need to watch for forms from both states.

Amun-Ra Azra
•Yes, exactly. Each state handles their own 1099-G forms separately.
