When does Washington ESD send out W2 forms for unemployment benefits?
I received unemployment benefits for most of 2024 and I'm trying to figure out when Washington ESD sends out the W2 forms. Tax season is coming up and I need to know when to expect it. Does anyone know the typical timeline for when they mail these out? Also, is there a way to access it online through the SAW portal or do I have to wait for the physical mail?

Washington ESD usually sends out 1099-G forms (not W2s) for unemployment benefits by January 31st. It's a 1099-G because unemployment is considered income but not wages from an employer. You should receive it in the mail, but you can also access it online through your SecureAccess Washington account.

•Oh right, 1099-G not W2. Thanks for the correction! Do you know if there's a specific section in the SAW portal where I can find it?

•Yes, log into your SAW account and look for the tax documents section. It should be under your unemployment services dashboard once they're available.

•Good point about the address. I moved last year so I better check that my address is updated in the system.

•You can update your address through the SAW portal in your profile settings. Just make sure to do it soon since they'll be preparing to mail these out.

I'm still waiting for mine from last year! Anyone else have issues with Washington ESD not sending tax forms? I've called like 50 times and can never get through to an actual person.

•I had the same problem last year. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to ESD agents without all the busy signals and hold times. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm so frustrated with trying to call ESD directly.

•Yeah it worked for me when I had an adjudication issue. They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redialing.

The 1099-G will show the total amount of unemployment compensation you received during 2024. Make sure to save a copy because you'll need it for your tax return. Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level and in Washington state there's no state income tax so you don't need to worry about that part.

•Wait, unemployment is taxable? I thought it wasn't because it's benefits not wages.

Emma Swift
•Yes, unemployment compensation is taxable income. You should have had the option to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits, but if you didn't, you'll owe taxes on the full amount when you file.

•Oh no, I didn't have taxes withheld. This is going to be a big tax bill.

•Yes, they'll send it to whatever mailing address you have on file with Washington ESD, including PO boxes. Just make sure your address is current in the system.

I'm dealing with the same thing but I'm also worried because my claim went through adjudication for like 6 weeks last year. Will that affect when I get my 1099-G? Some of my payments were delayed because of the adjudication process.

Emma Swift
•No, the adjudication delays won't affect your 1099-G. It will show all unemployment compensation you actually received in 2024, regardless of when the payments were processed or if there were delays.

•That's a relief. I was worried I'd have to wait longer or something.

Pro tip: if you're doing your taxes early, you can usually access the 1099-G online before the physical copy arrives in the mail. I did this last year and got my refund faster.

•That's smart! I want to file early this year so I'll definitely check online first.

•Same here. The online version is usually available a few days before they mail them out.

what if you moved and forgot to update your address? asking for a friend lol

•Your 'friend' should update their address in the SAW portal ASAP and then contact Washington ESD to request a duplicate 1099-G be sent to the correct address. You can also access it online once it's available.

This is my first time dealing with unemployment taxes. Do I need to do anything special on my tax return or just enter the amount from the 1099-G?
0 coins
Emma Swift
•Just enter the amount from the 1099-G as income on your tax return. It goes on the same line as other unemployment compensation. If you had taxes withheld from your benefits, that will also be shown on the 1099-G.

•Thanks! I did have taxes withheld so hopefully I won't owe much.

I never got my 1099-G last year and ended up having to estimate for my taxes. The IRS wasn't happy about that. Make sure you get yours!

•Yikes! Did you ever figure out what happened? Did Washington ESD not send it or was it a mail issue?

•Turned out my address was wrong in their system. I had moved and forgot to update it. Took forever to get it sorted out.

The Washington ESD website says they're required to send 1099-G forms by January 31st, but in my experience they usually get them out a few days before that deadline. Last year I got mine on January 28th.

•Good to know! I'll start checking my mail around January 25th then.

•Same, I usually get mine the last week of January.

Quick question - if I received unemployment in 2024 but my claim started in December 2023, will the 2024 1099-G show all the payments I got in 2024 or just the ones from the 2024 claim year?

Emma Swift
•It will show all unemployment compensation you received during calendar year 2024, regardless of when your claim started. The 1099-G is based on calendar year, not benefit year.

•Perfect, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Has anyone tried calling Washington ESD to ask about their 1099-G? I'm wondering if they can tell you the amount over the phone if you need it for early tax filing.

•I tried calling last year but could never get through. The hold times are insane. That's actually when I discovered Claimyr - they help you get connected to ESD agents without the endless busy signals.

Benjamin Kim
•Really? How does that work?

•You basically give them your info and they handle calling ESD for you. When they get an agent on the line, they connect you. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com if you're interested.

don't forget that if you had taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits, that amount will also be on the 1099-G. i made the mistake of not noticing that and thought i owed more taxes than i actually did

•Good catch! I definitely want to make sure I don't miss that. The withholding amount is in a separate box on the form, right?

I'm actually an accountant and I see this question a lot. Washington ESD is pretty good about getting the 1099-G forms out on time. If you don't receive yours by February 15th, definitely contact them because something went wrong.

•That's helpful to know! I'll mark my calendar to follow up if I don't get it by mid-February.

•As a tax professional, do you recommend waiting for the 1099-G or is it safe to use the online version?

Ryan Vasquez
•The online version is just as valid as the paper copy. I tell my clients to use whichever they get first if they want to file early.

This thread is super helpful! I was stressing about when to expect my tax forms. Sounds like I should have it by the end of January and can check online if I want to file early.

•Same here. I was worried I'd have to wait until March or something.
