Do you get a W2 from unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I received unemployment benefits for about 6 months last year through Washington ESD and I'm starting to think about taxes. Do I get a W2 form for the unemployment payments or is it some other tax document? I can't find anything in my mail yet and tax season is coming up fast. This is my first time dealing with unemployment benefits so I'm not sure what to expect for the tax paperwork.

You get a 1099-G form, not a W2. Washington ESD should mail it to you by the end of January. It shows how much unemployment you received and any federal taxes that were withheld.

•Thanks! Should I be worried if I haven't gotten it yet? It's almost February.

•They have until January 31st to mail them out. Check your address on file with Washington ESD to make sure it's current.

Yeah it's definitely a 1099-G not a W2. W2s are for employment income, 1099-G is for government payments like unemployment benefits.

•I always get confused about all these tax forms lol

•The 1099-G will show the total benefits paid and any federal tax withholdings. You'll need it to file your taxes.

If you can't reach Washington ESD by phone to check on your 1099-G, try using Claimyr at claimyr.com - they help you get through to actual agents. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. The Washington ESD phone lines are always busy when I try calling.

•I used Claimyr last month when I needed to update my address for tax documents. Actually got through to someone in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold.

You can also check your Washington ESD account online to see if there's a digital copy of your 1099-G available for download. Sometimes that's faster than waiting for the mail.

•Good idea! I'll log into my account and check right now.

•Yes, they usually post them online around the same time they mail them out.

stupid question but do I have to pay taxes on unemployment money?? I thought it was like welfare or something

•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level. Washington state doesn't have income tax so no state taxes on it here.

•That's why they give you the option to have federal taxes withheld when you file your weekly claims. If you didn't withhold, you might owe come tax time.

•ugh great, another thing I didn't think about when I was unemployed

I never got my 1099-G last year and had to call Washington ESD like 50 times before someone finally helped me get a copy. What a nightmare that was.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr would have saved you hours of frustration. They specialize in getting you connected to Washington ESD agents.

•Wish I had known about that back then! Will definitely keep it in mind for the future.

Important note: if you moved during your unemployment period, make sure Washington ESD has your current address or you won't get your 1099-G mailed to you.

•I did move in December! How do I update my address with them?

Keisha Robinson
•You can update it online through your Washington ESD account or call them. If you call, you might want to use that Claimyr service others mentioned to actually get through.

The IRS expects you to report unemployment income even if you don't get the 1099-G, so keep your own records of what you received.

•Good point. I should be able to see all my payments in my Washington ESD account history.

•Yes, your payment history online will show exactly what you received and when. Very helpful for tax prep.

Just remember the 1099-G shows the year the money was PAID to you, not necessarily the year you earned it. So if you got paid in January 2024 for claims from December 2023, it goes on your 2024 taxes.

•That's a really good point that trips people up every year. It's all about when you actually received the payment.

If anyone is still having trouble getting their 1099-G from Washington ESD, I had success with Claimyr recently. Worth the small fee to avoid the phone runaround.

•How much does it cost? Might be worth it if I can't get through myself.

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was reasonable for the time it saved me. Check their website for current pricing.

Pro tip: if you chose to have taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits, make sure the amount on your 1099-G matches what you expected. Sometimes there are discrepancies.

•Contact Washington ESD immediately to get a corrected 1099-G issued. Don't file your taxes with incorrect information.

I work at a tax prep place and we see this confusion every year. 1099-G for unemployment, W2 for wages. Keep them separate when you file.

•do you know if TurboTax handles unemployment forms okay? or should I go to a real person

•TurboTax handles 1099-G just fine. It will ask you about unemployment income and walk you through it step by step.

Washington ESD is supposed to send 1099-G forms by January 31st. If you don't get yours by early February, definitely follow up with them.

•Good to know the deadline. I'll give it another week or two before I start worrying.

•And if you need to call them about it, Claimyr can help you get through instead of sitting on hold forever.

Don't forget that if you received unemployment in multiple states, you'll get a separate 1099-G from each state's unemployment agency.

•I only got benefits from Washington ESD so I should just get one form then.

Ravi Sharma
•Correct, just one 1099-G from Washington ESD in your case.

The 1099-G will also show any overpayments that were recovered, which can affect your taxes too. Make sure you understand all the boxes on the form.

Yara Nassar
•I don't think I had any overpayments but I'll make sure to check when I get the form.

•Box 2 shows any overpayments that were repaid. Most people will have zero in that box.

If you're doing your own taxes, make sure you enter the unemployment income in the right section. It's not the same as wages or self-employment income.

Yara Nassar
•Where does it go exactly? I'm planning to use tax software.
0 coins
AstroAce
•Most tax software will have a specific section for unemployment income where you enter the 1099-G information. It should be clearly labeled.

Quick reminder that unemployment benefits are subject to federal income tax but not Social Security or Medicare taxes. That's why they don't show up on a W2.

Yara Nassar
•That actually makes sense now why it's a different form. Thanks for explaining!

Emma Davis
•Exactly right. It's considered income for federal tax purposes but not wages for FICA purposes.

Last year I had to call Washington ESD three times before I got someone who could help me with my missing 1099-G. This year I'm just going to use that Claimyr service if I have any issues.

Make sure to keep a copy of your 1099-G for your records. You'll need it if the IRS ever has questions about your unemployment income.

•You should keep tax documents for at least 3 years, sometimes longer depending on your situation.

The form will show your SSN, name, address, and the total unemployment compensation paid. Double check that all the personal info is correct before using it to file taxes.
