Is unemployment taxable in Washington - confused about tax filing

I'm getting ready to file my taxes and realized I have no idea if unemployment benefits are taxable. I received UI benefits from Washington ESD for about 6 months last year after getting laid off from my retail job. The total was around $12,000. Do I need to report this on my tax return? I never got any tax forms from Washington ESD in the mail, so I'm not sure what to do. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so I'm pretty lost.

Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable at the federal level. You should have received a 1099-G form from Washington ESD showing the total amount you received. Check your mail again or log into your Washington ESD account to download it.

I checked my account but don't see any tax documents. Where exactly would they be located?

Look under the 'Correspondence' section in your Washington ESD account. The 1099-G should be there as a downloadable PDF.

Yeah unemployment is definitely taxable income. I learned this the hard way my first year getting benefits - ended up owing like $800 at tax time because I didn't have taxes withheld from my weekly payments.

Wait, you can have taxes withheld? How do you set that up?

0 coins

When you file your weekly claims there's an option to have 10% federal tax withheld. You have to select it each week though, it doesn't automatically continue.

0 coins

Actually you can set up automatic withholding by calling Washington ESD directly. I used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent who helped me set it up permanently. Way easier than remembering to check the box every week.

The 1099-G forms were mailed out in late January, so you should have received yours by now. If you moved during your benefit period, it might have gone to your old address. You can request a duplicate through your Washington ESD online account.

That might be it - I moved in December. How do I request a duplicate?

Log into your secure account and look for 'Request duplicate tax documents' or something similar. It should be under account settings or correspondence.

ugh this is so confusing why don't they just automatically take taxes out like regular paychecks do??? I'm probably gonna owe a ton of money now

They do give you the option to withhold taxes, but it's not automatic. The system assumes people might prefer to get the full amount and handle taxes themselves.

I had the same panic when I realized unemployment was taxable. If you can't pay everything at once, the IRS has payment plan options that aren't too bad.

For anyone having trouble accessing their 1099-G or dealing with Washington ESD, I highly recommend checking out Claimyr. They helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD when I needed my tax documents. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Never heard of that service before. Is it legit?

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

Just a heads up - even though Washington state doesn't have income tax, you still need to report your unemployment benefits on your federal return. Don't forget about that!

Good point, I almost forgot we don't have state income tax here. At least that's one less thing to worry about.

I'm dealing with the same thing right now. Got my 1099-G but the amount seems wrong - it shows more than I think I actually received. Anyone else have this issue?

The 1099-G shows the total amount paid to you, including any weeks that might have been adjusted or corrected later. Check your payment history in your Washington ESD account to verify.

That makes sense. I did have one week that got paid twice by mistake and then they took it back. Probably shows up as two separate payments on the 1099-G.

Pro tip: if you received unemployment benefits, you might also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit even if your total income was low. Worth looking into when you file.

Really? I thought you needed to have worked to get that credit.

Unemployment counts as earned income for some tax purposes. Definitely worth checking with a tax preparer or using tax software that can figure it out for you.

I was in a similar situation last year. Ended up owing about $1,200 in federal taxes on my unemployment benefits. Now I always have them withhold the 10% to avoid that surprise.

Ouch, that's a big hit. Did you have to pay penalties for underpayment?

0 coins

Luckily no, because my total tax owed was less than $1,000 after all deductions. But it was still a shock I wasn't prepared for.

For those who can't find their 1099-G online - I had to call Washington ESD to get mine reissued. Took forever to get through but they were able to email me a copy the same day. If you need to reach them quickly, that Claimyr service someone mentioned actually works pretty well.

How much does Claimyr cost? I'm already tight on money from being unemployed.

I think it varies depending on what you need, but for me it was worth it to avoid spending my whole day trying to get through to Washington ESD.

Don't forget that if you had taxes withheld from your unemployment, you might actually get a refund! I was worried about owing money but ended up getting $300 back.

Emily Parker

That's encouraging! I didn't have anything withheld but maybe my other deductions will help.

Quick question - does anyone know if the extra $300 weekly payments from 2021 are also taxable? I'm still getting caught up on old tax returns.

Ezra Collins

•

Yes, all unemployment benefits including the federal supplements are taxable. Should all be included on your 1099-G.

Layla Sanders

•

Thanks, that's what I figured but wanted to double check.

I'm a tax preparer and see this confusion every year. Yes, unemployment is taxable federal income. Always report the full amount from your 1099-G. If you're missing the form, Washington ESD is usually pretty good about reissuing them quickly.

Good to know there's a professional here! Do you see a lot of people who forget to report their unemployment?

0 coins

More than you'd think, especially first-time filers. The IRS will catch it eventually since they get copies of all 1099-G forms, so it's better to report it correctly from the start.

This thread is super helpful! I was panicking about my tax situation but sounds like it's pretty straightforward once you have the right forms.

0 coins

Ezra Collins

•

Exactly, it's really not that complicated once you understand that unemployment is just treated like any other income source.

0 coins

One more thing to consider - if you received unemployment benefits and also had a job during the same year, make sure your total withholding covers both income sources. I got hit with underpayment penalties because I didn't adjust my W-4 when I started working again.

Emily Parker

•

That's a good point. I did start a new job in November so I'll need to make sure everything adds up correctly.

0 coins

Yeah, definitely worth double-checking. The combination of unemployment and regular wages can sometimes put you in a higher tax bracket than expected.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr last month to get through to Washington ESD about a different issue and they were able to help me access my 1099-G online. Much faster than trying to call myself. The website is claimyr.com if anyone needs it.

I keep seeing people mention this service. Might have to try it myself since I can never get through to Washington ESD when I call.

It's definitely worth trying if you're stuck. They have a good track record of getting people connected to actual Washington ESD agents.
