Washington ESD unemployment benefits - does tax unemployment benefits affect my return?
Quick question about taxes on Washington ESD unemployment benefits. I received about $8,200 in unemployment last year and I'm trying to figure out if this affects my tax return. Do I need to report unemployment benefits as income? Washington ESD sent me some kind of 1099 form but I'm not sure what to do with it. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so I'm pretty confused about the whole tax situation.

Yes, unemployment benefits from Washington ESD are considered taxable income by the IRS. You should have received a 1099-G form showing the total amount you received. You'll need to report this on your federal tax return.

•Thanks! I did get that 1099-G form. Do I need to pay taxes on the full amount or is there some kind of deduction?

•You'll report the full amount as income, but you may have had taxes withheld if you elected that option when filing your weekly claims.

I had the same question last year. The 1099-G from Washington ESD shows the total benefits paid, but check if you had federal taxes withheld. You can see this in your eServices account under payment history.

•How do I check if taxes were withheld? I don't remember making that choice when I was filing my weekly claims.

•Log into your Washington ESD account and look at your payment details. If you had 10% withheld for federal taxes, it should show there.

Just dealt with this exact situation. If you're having trouble accessing your Washington ESD account to check your withholding status, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers about my tax documents.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my 1099-G.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was stuck in the same phone loop you probably are. The service basically helps you get through the busy signals and connects you to a real person.

Important note - even if you didn't have taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits, you still have to report the income. You might owe money when you file depending on your other income for the year.

•This is why I always elect to have taxes taken out. Better safe than sorry come tax time.

•I wish I had known this when I was filing my weekly claims. Now I'm worried I'm going to owe a bunch of money.

The 1099-G should show both the total benefits AND any federal taxes that were withheld. Mine showed $0 withheld because I didn't elect that option, so I ended up owing about $800 extra on my return.

•Ouch, $800 is a lot. I really hope I elected to have taxes withheld but I honestly can't remember.

•You can always check your old weekly claim confirmations if you saved them. They usually show if you elected tax withholding.

Don't forget about state taxes too if you live in a state that taxes unemployment benefits. Washington state doesn't have income tax, but if you moved during the year you might need to file in another state.

•I stayed in Washington the whole time, so I guess I don't have to worry about state taxes. That's one less thing to stress about.

Had this same panic last year lol. If you can't find your 1099-G or it has wrong info, you definitely need to call Washington ESD to get it sorted before you file. Don't just guess at the numbers.

•Good luck getting through to them on the phone though. I tried for literally weeks last year.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist I guess. Sometimes you gotta pay a little to save your sanity when dealing with government agencies.

Pro tip: if you're doing your own taxes, most tax software will walk you through entering unemployment income. Just have your 1099-G handy and it's pretty straightforward.

•I was planning to use TurboTax. Hopefully it makes it easy to enter the unemployment info.

•Yeah TurboTax handles it well. Just make sure you enter the amounts exactly as they appear on your 1099-G.

Quick question - does anyone know if the $10,200 unemployment exclusion from 2021 is still a thing? I thought I heard something about that but wasn't sure if it applied to 2024 taxes.

Alicia Stern
•No, that was only for 2020 unemployment benefits and it was a one-time COVID relief measure. For 2024, all unemployment benefits are fully taxable.

•Darn, I was hoping that was still available. Thanks for clarifying.

Make sure you keep copies of all your unemployment documents including your 1099-G. You'll need them if you ever get audited, plus they're helpful for reference if you end up on unemployment again.

•Good point. I'll make sure to save everything in a tax folder.

I'm in the same boat - got unemployment last year and trying to figure out the tax situation. The amount on my 1099-G seems higher than what I remember receiving though. Is that normal?

Alicia Stern
•The 1099-G shows the total gross amount before any deductions. If you had union dues or other deductions taken out, your actual deposit would be less than what's on the form.

Dominic Green
•That makes sense. I did have some deductions so that probably explains the difference.

Anyone know what happens if Washington ESD made an error on the 1099-G? Like if they overstated the amount I received?

Alicia Stern
•You'd need to contact Washington ESD to get a corrected 1099-G issued. Don't just adjust the numbers yourself on your tax return.

•This is another situation where Claimyr could help you get through to Washington ESD quickly to resolve the issue. Tax season deadlines don't wait for government phone systems.

Just finished my taxes and included my unemployment benefits. Ended up owing about $600 more than expected, but at least it's done. Make sure you budget for the extra tax liability if you didn't have withholding.

•Thanks for the heads up. I really need to check if I had taxes withheld or I might be in for a surprise.

•Better to know now than be shocked when you file. Check your Washington ESD account or call them to verify.

Does anyone know if there are any deductions or credits that can help offset the tax on unemployment benefits? Seems unfair to pay taxes on money you got because you lost your job.

Alicia Stern
•There aren't specific deductions for unemployment income, but you might qualify for other credits based on your overall income level. The Earned Income Tax Credit has different thresholds that might help.

•I'll look into that. Every little bit helps when you're dealing with an unexpected tax bill.

For what it's worth, I always recommend having taxes withheld from unemployment benefits if you end up in that situation again. It's one less thing to worry about at tax time.

•Definitely learned my lesson on this one. I'll remember that for the future.

Final thought - if you're really struggling to get information from Washington ESD about your 1099-G or tax withholding status, don't wait until the last minute. Tax deadline will be here before you know it.

•Exactly. I waited too long last year and ended up having to file an extension because I couldn't get my unemployment tax documents sorted out in time.

•That's why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Sometimes you need to use every tool available to cut through the bureaucracy and get things done on time.
