Does Washington ESD unemployment send a W2 for benefits received?
I received unemployment benefits for about 6 months last year and I'm wondering if Washington ESD automatically sends out W2 forms or if I need to request one? Tax season is coming up and I want to make sure I have all my documents. I know the benefits are taxable income but I'm not sure how to get the tax form. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Washington ESD doesn't send W2s - they send 1099-G forms instead. You should receive it by January 31st if you had benefits last year. Check your SecureAccess Washington account online, they usually post them there first.

•Oh that makes sense! I was looking for the wrong form. Thanks for clarifying that.

•Yeah I made the same mistake my first year on UI. 1099-G is what you need for taxes.

You can download your 1099-G directly from the Washington ESD website once they're available. Just log into your account and look for tax documents section.

•Perfect, I'll check my account tomorrow. Do you know if they mail paper copies too?

•Yes they mail them but the online version is usually available weeks earlier.

I never got mine last year and had to call Washington ESD like 20 times to get through! The phone system is impossible. Anyone know a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr.com - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•The early morning calls work better - try calling right at 8am when they open.

just to clarify the 1099-G shows the total amount you received in unemployment benefits for the tax year. make sure the amount matches what you actually got because sometimes there are errors

•Good point, I should double check that against my records. What happens if there's a mistake?

•you'd need to contact Washington ESD to get a corrected 1099-G issued. keep good records of your weekly payments

I'm still waiting for mine from 2023! Washington ESD is so slow with everything. Filed my taxes late because of it.

•That's unusual - they're required to send them by January 31st. You should definitely follow up on that.

•Yeah I know they're supposed to but good luck getting through to them to complain about it

Another question - do I need to pay taxes on all the unemployment benefits or just federal? I'm confused about state taxes in Washington.

•Washington state has no income tax, so you only owe federal taxes on unemployment benefits. The 1099-G will show what you need to report to IRS.

•Lucky us living in Washington! Most other states would tax it too.

Pro tip: if you had taxes withheld from your unemployment payments, that will also show on the 1099-G. Don't forget to claim those withholdings on your tax return.

•I did have taxes withheld so that's good to know. Thanks for the reminder!

The Washington ESD website has a whole section about tax documents under the 'After You Apply' menu. Lots of helpful info there about 1099-G forms and when they're available.

•I'll check that out. Sounds like they have good resources on their website.

Make sure you save your 1099-G! You'll need it for your tax return and it's good to keep for your records. I always download the PDF and print a copy.

•Good advice, I'll make sure to save copies once I get it.

I had to request a duplicate 1099-G last year because I lost mine. You can do it online through your Washington ESD account or call them. The online option is definitely easier if it's available.

•How long did it take to get the duplicate? I might need to do the same thing.

•About a week through the mail, but you can usually get it instantly online if you're logged into your account.

Does anyone know if the 1099-G includes information about overpayments? I had to pay back some benefits and I'm not sure how that affects my taxes.

•Overpayments can be tricky for taxes. The 1099-G usually shows gross benefits paid, but you may need to account for repayments separately. I'd recommend talking to a tax professional about that situation.

•Thanks, that makes sense. I'll probably need some tax help this year anyway.

FYI if you can't access your 1099-G online and need to call Washington ESD, I had good luck using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Much better than trying to get through on your own.

•Is that service legit? Seems too good to be true that they can actually get you through to Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. They just handle the waiting and calling for you. Check out their demo video if you're curious how it works.

Remember that if you received benefits in multiple states, you'll get separate 1099-G forms from each state. But since you're asking about Washington ESD specifically, you'll just get the one from them.

•Good to know, though I only received benefits from Washington so I should just have the one form.

The 1099-G deadline is firm - January 31st. If you don't receive yours by mid-February, definitely contact Washington ESD because something went wrong.

•Got it, I'll mark my calendar to follow up if I don't see it by then.

One last thing - make sure your address is current with Washington ESD if you want the mailed copy. You can update it in your SecureAccess Washington account.
