NYDOL questioning my UI claim over <10 hours of gig work + missing January backpay. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my unemployment claim. I recently did some part-time gig work, less than 10 hours, and now the system is questioning my claim. On top of that, I haven't received my back pay for January. I'm worried my unemployment might stop, and I just started receiving it. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any advice on how to handle this when I talk to an agent?

Ugh, been there done that. The system is so finicky when it comes to gig work. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your docs from the gig job - pay stubs, invoices, everything. 2. Write down exactly how many hours you worked and how much you got paid. 3. When you talk to the agent, be super clear about the gig work being less than 10 hours. 4. Don't forget to bring up the missing January back pay! 5. If they ask for more docs after the call, send 'em ASAP. Good luck, hope it works out for you!

This is solid advice 💯 I'd add: keep a log of every call you make, who you talk to, and what they say. It'll save you headaches later.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I get the skepticism, but it's legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money, ya know? 🤷♂️

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line for you?

It took about an hour and a half, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They called me when an agent was on the line. Way better than wasting a whole day.

Have you tried reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help push things through faster.

I hadn't thought of that! Do you know how I'd go about contacting them?

Just google '[your area] state representative' and you should find their office contact info. Send an email explaining your situation. They usually have staff dedicated to helping with these issues.

This! 👆 They counted my gig work against me at first, but I appealed and won. Don't give up!

Anyone else notice how the system seems to flag literally ANY amount of gig work? It's like they're trying to discourage people from even trying to make extra money. 🙄

Yep, it's a catch-22. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The whole system needs an overhaul.

Pro tip: When you finally get through to an agent, ask for their employee ID or name. It helps if you need to follow up later. Also, see if they can give you a direct number or extension for next time.

OP, make sure you're reporting your gig work correctly on your weekly claims. Even if it's just a few hours, you gotta disclose it. Better safe than sorry!

Definitely! I reported it, which is why they're questioning my claim now. Just hope it doesn't mess everything up. 😰
