NYDOL $0 benefits - only worked 1 quarter last year due to age discrimination. Help!

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my unemployment claim. I only worked one quarter last year with a decent salary, but the other three quarters were really low because it was tough finding work due to my age. Now my claim is showing $0 benefits. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on what I should say when I finally get through to someone at unemployment?

Ugh, that sucks. I've been there. You might want to ask about using an 'alternate base period' when you talk to them. It could help them consider your more recent earnings instead of the whole year.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely bring that up. Do you know if they're usually open to using alternate base periods?

In my experience, they can be. Just explain your situation clearly. Age discrimination is real, and they might have some programs to help. Good luck!

Alternate base period saved my butt last year. Definitely worth asking about!

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at unemployment. I used this site called claimyr.com. It's a calling tool that dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of frustration.

20 bucks tho? 🤔 The system is so broken we gotta pay just to talk to someone smh

I get it, but for me it was worth it. Time is money, ya know? 🤷‍♂️

Listen up, because this is important: 1. When you call, ask about the 'alternate base period' like others have mentioned. This can help if your recent earnings are better. 2. Inquire about any special programs for older workers. Many states have initiatives to combat age discrimination. 3. Be prepared with exact dates and earnings for your last job. The more info you have, the better. 4. If they say you don't qualify for regular unemployment, ask about Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) if it's still available in your state. 5. Don't take no for an answer. If the first person can't help, politely ask to speak with a supervisor. 6. Document everything. Get the name of who you spoke to and take notes. Remember, you paid into this system. You deserve help. Don't give up!

have you tried going to your local unemployment office in person? sometimes face-to-face works better than phone calls

Thanks for the support. It's tough out there for us 'seasoned' folks 😅

Not to be that guy, but have you considered gig work or freelancing? Might help bridge the gap while you sort this out. Uber, Doordash, Fiverr, etc.

This! 👆 Gig economy saved me when I was in a similar situation.

careful tho, gig work can mess with ur unemployment eligibility. make sure u report any earnings!

The whole system is rigged against us, I swear. Good luck OP, you're gonna need it 🙄

Hey, just wanted to say don't give up. I was in a similar boat (see what I did there? 😉) last year. It took some persistence, but I finally got my benefits sorted. You got this!

Thanks for the encouragement! Mind if I ask how long it took you to get it sorted?

It took about 6 weeks of back and forth, but I finally got it resolved. Stay on em!
