NYDOL Unemployment Eligibility Question - Can I qualify with $8k earnings in last quarter but less than $3400 in previous quarters?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my unemployment claim. I was let go in January and I'm trying to figure out if I qualify. My earnings from October to December were about $8000, but I'm worried because I didn't make more than $3400 in any single quarter last year. Does anyone know if I still have a shot at qualifying? I've heard something about an 'alternate base period' but I'm not sure how it works or if it applies to me. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Yo, I've been there! The alternate base period is definitely a thing. It's like a lifesaver for people who had lower earnings in the earlier part of the year. Basically, instead of using the standard base period (which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters), they look at your most recent completed quarter. In your case, that October-December period where you made $8000 could be gold. When you talk to them, make sure to ask about this specifically. It could make all the difference! Also, pro tip: be prepared for a loooong wait time when you call. The system is a mess rn 🙄

•@profile 3 omg i know its the WORST. I finally found a way tho! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials through all the phone menus, waits on hold, and then calls you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but honestly? Worth every penny for my sanity. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•@profile 4 I get the skepticism, I felt the same way at first. But after spending hours trying to get through myself, it was a lifesaver. They don't ask for any personal info, just your phone number to call you back. Totally legit and saved me so much time and frustration

Listen up, because I've been through this rodeo before. Here's what you need to know about qualifying for unemployment: 1. Base Period: Normally, they look at your earnings over the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters. But don't panic if that doesn't work in your favor! 2. Alternate Base Period: This is your golden ticket. If you don't qualify under the standard base period, many states allow you to use an alternate base period. This usually considers your most recent completed quarter. 3. Minimum Earnings: Each state has different requirements, but generally, you need to have earned a certain amount during your base period. Your $8000 in the last quarter might just save you here. 4. Reason for Unemployment: Being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you. It depends on the reason. If it wasn't for misconduct, you're probably okay. 5. Documentation: Gather all your pay stubs, W-2 forms, and any communication about your termination. The more info you have, the better. 6. Be Persistent: The system is overloaded and confusing. Don't give up if you get conflicting info or denials. Appeal if necessary. 7. Ask Specifically: When you finally get through to someone, ask directly about the alternate base period and how it might apply to your situation. Remember, the rules can vary by state, so double-check the specific requirements for your location. And don't be afraid to ask for a supervisor if you're not getting clear answers. Good luck!

Hey, just wanted to share something that might help you get through to someone. I used this site called claimyr.com - they have a tool that calls unemployment for you, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person answers. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Quick question - when exactly in January were you let go? That might affect which quarter they use for calculations.

•I was fired on January 17th. Does that make a difference?

•Yeah, it could! Since you were employed for part of January, that might affect how they calculate your base period. Definitely mention this when you talk to them!

have you tried applying online? sometimes its easier than calling

•I did try online, but my claim is pending and I think it's because of the income discrepancies. That's why I need to talk to someone directly.

Hey Zoe! I went through something super similar last year. The alternate base period was exactly what saved my claim. Since you made $8k in that October-December quarter, you're actually in a pretty good position. Here's what I learned: when they can't use the standard base period (because you didn't meet the earnings threshold in earlier quarters), they automatically check if you qualify under the alternate base period. Your recent $8k quarter will likely be the key. A few things that helped me: - Make sure you have all your pay stubs from that October-December period ready - When you finally get through to someone, be super clear about wanting them to check the alternate base period specifically - Don't get discouraged if the first person you talk to seems confused - some reps know more about this than others The fact that you were let go (not fired for misconduct) in January should work in your favor too. Keep pushing through the process - it's frustrating but you've got a solid case! 💪
