NY unemployment sent funds to Key2Benefits card after bank rejection but money still missing

My DirectDeposit with Capital One got rejected back in December because they flagged my account for suspicious activity. I tried calling unemployment right away but couldn't get through. About 3 weeks later, I received a letter saying my unemployment payments would be redirected to a Key2Benefits card. The letter said to expect the card within 7-10 business days. I got the card about two weeks ago but when I activated it, there was a zero balance. I've been checking the balance daily and still nothing has shown up. It's been over 6 weeks since my bank rejected the funds. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm running out of savings and really need this money for rent and groceries.

This happened to me back in October!! My Regions account got frozen and it was a NIGHTMARE dealing with ny unemployment. My payments were supposed to come on the Key2Benefits card but nothing for like 3 weeks after I got the card. I ended up having to get through to them on the phone (which took DAYS) and they said a hold was put on the account. Had to verify my identity again.they released the funds few days later

Omg thank you for sharing this! Did they tell you why there was a hold? I'm freaking out because I can't get thru to ANYBODY 😭

They said it was a 'security measure' when funds get returned. Super annoying. Keep trying to call in the morning right when they open. Thats how I finally got through.

Always the same story with them. 'Security measure' that just happens to mean they hold onto YOUR money for another month 🙄

After struggling to reach NY unemployment for weeks, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual agent. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast - seriously the only way I could talk to a live person. I was in a similar situation with a Chase account freeze and they helped me set up the Key2Benefits card properly. Check out their YouTube if you wanna see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this for real? does it actually work? i've been trying to get through for like a month now

0 coins

Yeah it's actually real. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They just keep calling the unemployment line for you and then connect you when a human picks up. Saved me hours of hold music lol

0 coins

sounds too good to be true... how does it even work? do they have some special connection to unemployment or something?

0 coins

Nah, nothing sketchy. It's just an automated system that does the calling and waiting on hold for you. Then when a real person answers, it calls your phone and connects you. Check the youtube I linked - it explains it better than I can

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work and just waste more time 🙄

0 coins

Think what you want but it worked for me 🤷‍♀️ My benefits were stuck for 3 weeks before this. Got everything sorted in one call after they connected me.

You need to call them ASAP. When funds get rejected and they issue a Key2Benefits card, it doesnt automatically transfer the old funds. Common problem with NY unemployment. Sometimes they need to manually release the funds to the new card. Keep trying to get thru to a rep.

i waited almost 2 MONTHS after my bank (wells fargo) returned the funds. just kept checking that stupid card balance every morning hoping for something. finally called my state rep's office and they got it fixed in 48 hours. try that route if u cant get thru the normal phone lines

0 coins

That's actually a really good idea. Which office did you contact? Like your local state representative?

0 coins

yup! found my state assembly person on google. called their office, explained the situation, and they have special contacts at unemployment they can reach. game changer fr

Let me walk you through what's happening here and how to fix it: When your bank rejects unemployment funds, it triggers a security flag in the NY unemployment system. The system does automatically generate and mail a Key2Benefits card, but the funds don't automatically transfer - this is where most people get stuck. Here's what you need to do: 1) First, make sure your card is properly activated through the Key2Benefits portal 2) You NEED to speak with a claims specialist (not just any rep) to manually release the funds to your card 3) If you can't get through on the regular lines, I highly recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that will keep calling for you and connect you when they get through. Saved me literally days of trying. 4) When you get a rep, specifically ask them to check if there's a "returned payment hold" on your account 5) They'll need to verify your identity again (have your ID ready) 6) Request they expedite the transfer to your Key2Benefits card Most importantly - document everything! Get the rep's name and ID number if possible. If they promise funds by a certain date and it doesn't happen, you'll need this info to escalate. Good luck! The system is frustrating but fixable.

Thank you for this detailed walkthrough! I'm definitely going to try claimyr.com because I can't waste any more time trying to call them myself. I'll report back once I get through.

This is exactly what happened to me too. Had to specifically ask about the "returned payment hold" - they don't volunteer that info unless you know to ask. +1 for this advice.

The Key2Benefits cards are the WORST. I had exact same issue and it turned out they had my SSN wrong in the system after the bank return. Double check all your info is correct in your online portal.

just fyi those key2benefits cards have CRAZY fees for everything. check atm fees before u withdraw anything. ny unemployment conveniently doesnt tell you about all that 🙃

0 coins

omg YES this!! they charged me $1.50 PER TRANSACTION when i was buying groceries. ended up just taking all the cash out at once to avoid more fees

0 coins

You can transfer the money from the card to your regular bank account for free though! That's what I did to avoid all those dumb fees. Just link it in the Key2Benefits portal.

NY unemployment is such a joke. Your money is probably sitting in limbo while they earn interest on it 🤡 Only way to fix it is to actually talk to a human which is nearly impossible

0 coins

THIS!! The whole system is designed to be so frustrating that people just give up. They're counting on it.

same thing happend to me with my WellsFargo account. turns out the dol needs to manually release the returned funds to the card. u HAVE to talk to someone. i used claimyr.com and got through in like 30 min after trying for DAYS on my own. good luck 👍

Have you tried checking if there's a pending ID verification issue? Sometimes when banks reject payments and they switch to the card, it triggers an identity verification check. Log in to your online account and see if there's a message or task waiting.

0 coins

I just checked and don't see anything about identity verification. My account just shows the payments as "processed" but they're definitely not on the card. So frustrating!

CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR!!! this is the secret nobody tells you. my benefits were stuck for 3 months, called my state senator's office, problem fixed in 48 hours. they have dedicated contacts at unemployment who actually pick up the phone for them.

0 coins

I second this! My assembly member's office helped me when I couldn't get through. They have a form you fill out giving them permission to inquire about your case.

0 coins

how do you find out who your state senator is? anyone got a link?

0 coins

just google "find my NY state senator" and put in your address. super easy.

File a complaint with CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) about Key2Benefits. That got my issue resolved in a week after months of runaround. They hate federal complaints.

0 coins

there's actually a special phone number just for Key2Benefits issues: 1-855-203-3823. regular unemployment line agents will just transfer u anyway. call first thing in the morning like 7:58am

0 coins

Thank you for this number! I'll try calling tomorrow morning right when they open.

The Key2Benefits system is a total scam tbh. They make it complicated on purpose cuz they make $ off all the fees. When my chase account got shut down I had same problem. Had to talk to tier 2 support (demand to be transferred) to get it fixed

0 coins

Unfortunately there's a known glitch in the system. If the bank rejection happened during the same week a new payment was supposed to be processed, their system can't handle it properly. I worked for a financial company that dealt with DOL and this happened ALL THE TIME. only solution is talking to an agent.

0 coins

That's interesting. They did reject it right around when I was supposed to get a new payment. Probably exactly what happened!

0 coins

check ur mail VERY carefully. sometimes they send a separate letter with a PIN that you need to activate certain features on the card. without that pin the funds might be there but 'locked' if that makes sense

0 coins

If ur in NYC the workforce1 centers can sometimes help with unemployment issues. Worth trying if ur desperate - they have direct lines to DOL that regular people can't access.

When they switched me to Key2Benefits after my Chime shutdown, took over 2 months to get my money. Finally got thru to someone using claimyr.com and they fixed it in like 5 min. Turns out there was a 'security hold' nobody bothered to tell me about 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

how much did claimyr cost? worth it?

0 coins

talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast, it was the only way I could talk to a live agent. totally worth it when you're waiting on thousands in benefits.

I'm dealing with something very similar right now! My Chase account got flagged last month and they rejected my unemployment payment. Got the Key2Benefits card about 10 days ago but it's showing zero balance too. Reading through everyone's responses here, it sounds like there's almost always some kind of hold that they don't tell you about. I'm going to try that special Key2Benefits number someone mentioned (1-855-203-3823) tomorrow morning. If that doesn't work, I might have to try one of those callback services people are talking about. This whole system is so broken - they make it nearly impossible to get help when you need your benefits the most. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, at least now I know I'm not alone in this mess!
