NY unemployment approved 8 weeks ago but no KeyBank card received - frustrated and broke

Started claiming unemployment back in August after getting laid off. In late September, got a text message saying I was approved and would receive my KeyBank debit card within 3 weeks along with some official letter. It's now been over a month and still nothing has shown up in my mailbox. Called KeyBank customer service and they told me the state hasn't even sent my information to them to process a card yet! But when I log into my NY unemployment account it says I'm approved and have benefits waiting since August 15th - that's almost $4,800 that I haven't been able to access for over 3 months! Bills are piling up and I'm at my wits end. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a solution? Do I need to visit an office in person? The phone lines are impossible.

Same thing happened to me. The NY unemployment system is a joke. I had to keep calling every single day for weeks. Finally got through using claimyr.com and they fixed it in 10 minutes. It was the best money i've spent all year - talking to a actual human got my benefits flowing within 48 hours. They connect you with a live agent without all the waiting. is this for real? seems 2 good to be true tbh

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 2 months of no money. They just stay on hold for you and call when there's a real person. I literally talked to someone in 20 min after trying for weeks on my own.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? Been calling for a month straight and can't get through 🤬

0 coins

yeah it works. they just do the waiting for you. All the stuff you need to say and do is still up to you when they connect you with the agent.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? unemployment system is broken beyond belief

0 coins

the difference is it actually worked lol. look I was just as skeptical. but after calling 137 times myself (yes I counted) and never getting through, this got me talking to someone who fixed my KeyBank card issue in literally one call.

You gotta physically go to a DOL office. The phone system is useless and keybank is even worse. I waited 11 weeks for my card before I went in person and they told me my address was entered wrong!!! Like one digit off in my apartment number and they never bothered to tell me. 🤦‍♂️

Do I need an appointment to go in? And do you know which office would be best to visit? I'm in Brooklyn.

0 coins

Yeah u need to book online. They fill up super quick tho so check at midnight when they release new slots. The downtown Brooklyn one on Jay St is decent but gets packed.

This is only part of the solution sometimes. My cousin went in person and they STILL didn't fix it. Had to call for another 3 weeks after that.

When they say it will take weeks, it really means months lol. I've been through this exact situation and all I can say is keep calling and emailing every day. Eventually they'll fix it, but not because the system works - just because you annoyed someone enough. Try contacting your local state rep too, that sometimes speeds things up.

Literally just saw a TikTok about this! Apparently tons of people are having issues with KeyBank cards not showing up. Something about a backlog in their system after they switched card providers. But the crazy thing is DOL considers it 'paid' the second they approve it, even if you have NO WAY to access the money! This system is so broken 😭

Can you link the TikTok?

I'll try to find it again! It was on my FYP yesterday. The creator had like 200k followers and specializes in unemployment tips.

I saw that one too! She also mentioned you can request direct deposit instead of waiting for the card. Might be worth trying that route.

Here's what worked for me after 2+ months of no card and no money despite being approved: First, you need to reach an actual human being at NY unemployment. The regular phone system is basically useless since they're overwhelmed. I tried for weeks and never got through until I used claimyr.com - they stay on hold for you and call when there's a real agent (seriously saved my sanity). Once you get someone on the phone: 1. Ask them to verify your mailing address is correct in the system. Often the issue is a small error in how it's entered that nobody notices. 2. Request they put in a direct deposit option instead of waiting for the KeyBank card. This worked for me - got my money 3 days after setting up direct deposit. 3. If they say the card has been mailed, ask for the exact date and request they cancel that card and issue a new one. Often they've been "sent" but are sitting in some backlog. 4. Get a confirmation number or case number for your call. This is CRITICAL if you need to follow up. 5. If you're still not getting anywhere, contact your local state assembly person. Their offices have special contacts at unemployment and can often resolve issues quickly. The system is incredibly broken right now, but being persistent and documenting everything is the only way through. Hang in there - I know how stressful it is to be approved but unable to access your money.

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed answer. Going to try claimyr.com today because I'm desperate at this point and need to pay rent. Will update if it works!

This should be pinned to the top of the forum tbh. Most helpful answer I've seen about the KeyBank issue.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol. do these methods actually work or just more smoke and mirrors?

0 coins

I was super skeptical too but literally nothing was working. I had bills past due and was about to get evicted. The claimyr thing worked when nothing else did. Feel free to try all the other options first!

Contact your state senator!!!! I was in the same situation - approved for benefits but no card for over 2 months. Called their office, had benefits direct deposited within a week. They have special contacts at DOL that regular people don't have access to.

This is legit advice. My state assembly person's office fixed my unemployment issues in days after I struggled for months on my own.

0 coins

How do you even figure out who your state senator is? And do you just call their office?

0 coins

Just google "who is my new york state senator" and put in your address. Then call their office and say you need help with an unemployment issue. They'll usually have you fill out a form with details.

I literally drove 2 hours to Albany to the main unemployment office cause I was so desperate after waiting 3 months for my card. turns out there was a fraud alert on my account that nobody bothered to tell me about. Check if that might be happening to you too.

0 coins

This is EXACTLY what happened to me!!! I filed in June, got approved in July, and didnt get my card until OCTOBER. When I finally got through to someone, they said "oh we've been paying you since july" but I had no way to access it!! The system is completely broken. Keep calling them every day, eventually you'll get through.

0 coins

Did you ever figure out why it took so long? Was there something wrong with your address or application?

0 coins

They blamed it on "high volume" and "staffing issues" but wouldn't give me a real answer. Just kept saying the card was "in process" for months. Super frustrating.

0 coins

KeyBank is THE WORST. When I finally got my card after 2 months, it had the wrong name on it!!! Then took another month to get a replacement. Switch to direct deposit asap if you can ever get someone on the phone.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work. I've been trying to get my benefits for 4 months and nothing works. The whole system is designed to wear us down so we give up. 😡

0 coins

So what are you suggesting? Just give up? Some of these tips actually do work. My friend had success contacting her assembly member.

0 coins

Not saying give up, just tired of false hope. Called 200+ times, emailed, went in person, contacted my assembly person. Still no benefits. System is rigged against us.

0 coins

I felt the same way until I finally got through using claimyr.com - sometimes you gotta try everything. Don't give up!

0 coins

Quick suggestion that worked for me - email them at the same time as calling. I sent an email with URGENT KEYBANK ISSUE in subject line every day for a week and eventually got a response. Sometimes the email team is less backed up.

0 coins

What email address did you use? I can't find a direct contact email anywhere on their site.

0 coins

I used this one: labor.sm.unemployment@labor.ny.gov - make sure to include your full name, last 4 of SSN and claim ID in the email.

0 coins

Have you checked if your mail is being forwarded or stolen? My neighbor had this exact issue and it turned out someone was stealing mail from our building. Just a thought.

0 coins

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I found out about claimyr.com. It literally saved my sanity. They wait on hold and call you when there's an agent. Got my direct deposit set up instead of waiting for the card. This was after TWO MONTHS of trying to get through myself.

0 coins

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

No catch man. They just wait on hold so you don't have to. I wasted so many hours listening to that same hold music I was losing my mind. This way I just went about my day and they called when there was a human.

0 coins

I'm with @profile26 on this one. Used it last week after my roommate recommended it. The waiting is the WORST part of dealing with unemployment and this basically eliminated that problem.

0 coins

THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE NY SYSTEM!!! My caseworker told me they're having a backlog of over 50,000 KeyBank cards!!! They should just tell people this instead of making us wait and stress out for months. Request direct deposit if you can ever speak to someone.

0 coins

Friendly reminder that its illegal for them to withhold your benefits once approved. Document EVERYTHING. Dates you called, who you spoke with, what they said. If you end up needing to file a complaint or get legal help, this documentation will be crucial.

0 coins

This is good advice. I ended up filing a complaint with the state ombudsman after 3 months of no card. Got a call back within 48 hours.

What's the ombudsman contact info? Might need this...

NYS Office of the Advocate for Business: 855-466-9757 - they can help with unemployment issues too!
