Got my KeyBank card in the mail - am I approved for ny unemployment or just getting my hopes up?

I was let go from my marketing job back in October due to budget cuts, and I applied for unemployment benefits right away. It's been a long process with all the paperwork and waiting. Last week I finally received a KeyBank debit card in the mail from the unemployment office. Does this mean I've been approved and will start getting payments soon? I checked my account online but there's no balance showing yet. I'm getting anxious because rent is coming up and my savings are almost gone. Has anyone else received their card before any money was actually deposited? How long did you have to wait after getting the card? I've tried calling the NY unemployment office but keep getting disconnected or put on hold forever.

Yeah its a good sign ur approved. When i got my card back in August, it took about 3 days after that for the first payment to hit. Just keep checking the balance online or thru the app. Don't rely on the website to tell you when money comes in, they're slow to update sometimes.

That's a relief! I'll keep checking the balance. Did you get any kind of notification when funds were added or did you just have to keep checking?

No notification for me. Had to keep checking like a crazy person lol. Some people get texts but I never did 🤷‍♀️

After weeks of trying to get through on the phone lines to ny unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual agent. Talking to a real person got my payments unlocked within 48 hours. Best decision I made after wasting so much time on hold. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much stress when I was in your position.

This sounds like an ad 👀 Has anyone else actually used this?

Not an ad lol. Just sharing what worked for me when I was desperate. Was about to lose my apartment before I finally got through to someone who could help.

I used it last month when my claim got stuck in pending for 6 weeks. Finally got someone on the phone who fixed everything in like 10 minutes. Wish I'd known about it sooner tbh

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol. does this actually work??

Yeah it does. They just connect you with an actual unemployment agent faster. The agent is still from NY unemployment, not from their company.

Receiving the card means ur on the right track but doesnt 100% guarantee approval. I got my card but then had to wait almost 3 weeks for my first payment to hit. The system is broken af. Make sure you're doing your weekly certifications even if your balance is still zero.

Getting the card is step 1, but you still need to keep certifying every week! Don't skip this or you'll delay everything. Log in to your account every Sunday and answer the questions about whether you looked for work, etc. It's annoying but necessary.

Thanks for the reminder! I've been certifying every week since I applied. It just feels like I'm doing it for nothing when no money is coming in yet.

Keep at it. The system is slow but if u miss even one week it can mess everything up. I learned that the hard way 😩

For what it's worth I got my card like 2 weeks before any money was on it. Apparently they just send them out when you apply and then the money comes later if you get approved. But since you already got the card, you won't have to wait for it to arrive once they do approve you. Silver linings I guess? 🤷‍♂️

Same. Card came quick, money took forever. Classic NY unemployment move 😂

I KNOW THIS FEELING! After i got my KeyBank card, i waited 10 days with nothing. Then randomly checked and there was a backpay deposit of $1864! They don't tell you when it's coming, you just have to keep checking the balance. Set up the KeyBank app on your phone - it updates faster than the ny unemployment website.

That's really helpful! I'll download the KeyBank app right now.

OK so here's what's ACTUALLY happening with the KeyBank cards. They mail them out to everyone who applies as part of the process. Getting the card doesn't mean you're approved yet - it just means they've processed your application and you're in the system. Some people get approved quickly and see money within days of getting the card. Others (like me) had to wait weeks or even go through appeals before seeing a dime. If you really want to know your status, you need to talk to a human being at NY unemployment. Good luck with that though... took me 67 calls over 3 days before I finally got through. Their phone system is a complete joke.

67 calls? You got lucky. I called 200+ times and never got through until I used claimyr.com to get a callback. worth every penny when my rent was due and i needed my benefits.

This ⬆️ is the real answer. Getting the card just means you're in the system.

Their stupid website never shows accurate info. My account showed $0 balance for a week after I got my first payment! I almost had a heart attack thinking they took the money back 😡 The KeyBank card balance is more accurate than the DOL website.

If u need money ASAP might be worth calling them. the wait times are insane but sometimes they can push your payments through faster if you explain your situation. Just be prepared to wait on hold for 2-3 hours minimum. bring a book lol

2-3 hours? man i wish. i waited 5 hours last month and then got disconnected right when someone finally picked up 💀

Try claimyr.com instead of waiting on hold. They'll call and wait for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

Here's a detailed breakdown of how the NY unemployment payment process typically works (from someone who's been through it twice): 1) You apply for benefits and they review your application 2) They mail you a KeyBank debit card while your application is still being processed 3) If approved, they'll determine your weekly benefit amount 4) Payments start appearing on your card after approval, usually within 2-3 weeks of application if there are no issues 5) You MUST certify every week or payments will stop Common delays happen because: - They need additional verification from you or your employer - Your previous employer disputes your claim - System glitches (happens all the time) - You missed answering a letter or request for information Quickest way to resolve issues is speaking directly with an agent. Instead of calling hundreds of times, I used claimyr.com to get a callback and had my issue resolved in one conversation. The time you save is worth it when bills are due. Also, set up direct deposit in your online account if you prefer that over the KeyBank card. It's slightly faster once payments start coming through.

getting the card is a good sign but honestly ny unemployment is such a mess right now who knows. my friend and i both applied the same day, she got paid in 2 weeks, took me 6 weeks with no explanation for the delay.

check if u have unresolved issues on your claim. log into ur account and look for any messages or alerts. sometimes they need additional info but dont make it obvious

Just checked and don't see any alerts or messages asking for more info. Hopefully that's a good sign?
