1 month waiting for NY unemployment KeyBank card - still no money after 6 months
Has anyone dealt with this frustrating KeyBank card situation? I got a text on October 29, 2025 saying I'd receive both a letter AND my KeyBank debit card within three weeks. It's been over a month now and I haven't received EITHER! When I called KeyBank and went through their KeyBenefits automated system, it says the state hasn't even sent my name to be processed for a card yet!! I can still log into my NY unemployment account and it shows I'm approved for benefits - they owe me money going all the way back to May 30th. That's SIX MONTHS with zero payments! I'm still certifying every week but haven't seen a penny. Can someone please help me figure out what's going on or who I need to contact? I'm getting desperate here.

Unfortunately, this happens quite often with the NY KeyBank cards. There are a few things you need to do right away: 1. Call the NYSDOL directly at 888-209-8124 (though getting through is nearly impossible) 2. Specifically ask about the status of your payment method - sometimes they have your account flagged for direct deposit instead of KeyBank 3. Check if there's an identity verification hold on your account - many payment delays are because of this 4. Request that they resend the payment method election form if needed The good news is that once this is resolved, you should get all back payments at once. The system is just incredibly backed up right now.

•Thank you!! I've been trying that 888 number for weeks but can't get through to anyone. It either disconnects me or puts me on hold forever. Is there any other way to reach them? I'm 100% sure I selected the KeyBank card option when I applied, so I don't understand why they haven't processed it yet.

After struggling with the EXACT same issue in January, I finally found a solution that worked. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human at unemployment. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me HOURS of frustration. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through, I found out they had my address wrong by ONE digit, so all my mail was being returned. The agent fixed it on the spot and reissued my KeyBank card. Had it within 10 days. Worth every penny not to deal with busy signals and disconnections!

•I've never heard of Claimyr before. Does it really work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Six months of back payments would literally change my life right now.

•It absolutely worked for me. I was skeptical too, but after trying to get through for weeks, I was desperate. The callback came in about 45 minutes, and I was talking to a real person who could actually see what was wrong with my claim. Just make sure you have all your claim info ready when they call you back.

The REAL problem is that NY unemployment is INTENTIONALLY making it hard to get your benefits!!! They hope people will just give up so they can keep the money. I went through this EXACT thing last year and had to contact my state assembly person before anything happened. This is THEFT of benefits we're entitled to!!

•While contacting your state representative can sometimes help, I don't think it's intentional. The system is just overwhelmed and outdated. They're still using technology from the 90s in some cases, and the staff is limited. But yes, reaching out to your assemblyperson or state senator is a good additional step if you can't get resolution directly.

Double-check your spam/junk folder for emails from NYSDOL. Sometimes they send important notifications about payment issues there. Also, log into your account and make sure your mailing address is 100% correct. Even a small error can cause major delays. If your address is correct, you should request a payment trace through NYSDOL. Call first thing in the morning (7:30 am) when the phone lines open - that's your best chance of getting through. Ask specifically for a "payment trace" on your KeyBank card. Also, have you verified that all your weekly certifications were accepted? Sometimes people think they've certified but the system hasn't actually recorded it properly.

•I checked my spam folder and there's nothing there from NYSDOL. My address is definitely correct because I double-checked it a bunch of times. All my weekly certifications show as "processed" in the system, so that's not the issue either. I'll try calling at 7:30am tomorrow though - I've been trying midday so maybe that's why I can't get through.

•While you're waiting for this to resolve, have you checked with your local Department of Social Services about emergency assistance? They often have programs that can help with rent/utilities while you're sorting out unemployment issues. Most counties in NY have emergency funds specifically for situations like this.

One important thing to check: Did you receive ANY correspondence from NYSDOL about identity verification? Sometimes they request additional documentation through their secure message center, and if you don't respond within a certain timeframe, they put a hold on your payments. Log into your account and check for any messages or action items. Also check the "Payment History" section - sometimes there are specific codes that indicate why payments are held up. If you see a code like "TC490" or "IVH" next to your payments, that's an identity verification hold that needs to be resolved before they'll issue the KeyBank card.

•I just checked and I don't have any messages asking for identity verification. There's nothing in my payment history either - it's completely blank, even though I've been certified for months. It's like I'm approved but the money is just sitting somewhere instead of coming to me.

I work as an employment counselor and see this frequently. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Your claim is probably in what's called "payment pending" status. This means you're approved but something is flagging the actual release of funds. 2. The most common causes are: - Identity verification issues (even if you weren't notified) - Employer protest/dispute of your claim - System glitch in payment processing - Administrative review flag 3. For the KeyBank card specifically, they won't issue one until at least one payment is processed, which explains why KeyBank says they haven't received your information. You need to speak directly with a claims specialist, not just a general customer service rep. When you call, use the phrase "payment pending status resolution" specifically - this sometimes gets you to a different department.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I think you're right about the "payment pending" status. My employer definitely didn't protest the claim - I was laid off with a whole group and they told us to apply for unemployment. I'll try using that specific phrase when I call tomorrow morning.

After I finally got through to someone (using Claimyr), they told me that sometimes there's a security verification that gets triggered on accounts with larger backpay amounts. Since you're owed 6 months of payments, that's probably what happened. Once they release the verification hold, your card should be issued right away. The agent I spoke with was able to manually override the hold once I confirmed some identity details.

•This is correct. NYSDOL implemented enhanced security measures in early 2025 that automatically flag accounts with backpay exceeding certain thresholds. It's an anti-fraud measure, but unfortunately it catches many legitimate claimants in the process. A claims specialist can remove this hold, but you must speak with someone who has that authorization level.

•I just checked again and I definitely selected the KeyBank card option. There's no bank account info in my profile at all. So frustrating!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone!!! I used Claimyr like someone suggested here and got a callback in about 30 minutes. The agent confirmed there was a security hold on my account because of the large backpay amount. She verified my identity and lifted the hold! She said my KeyBank card should be processed within 3 business days and I should receive it within 7-10 days after that. All my back payments will be loaded onto it when it arrives! I'm so relieved - thank you all for your help and suggestions!

•That's excellent news! Make sure to activate the card immediately when you receive it, and set up a PIN that you'll remember. Also, be aware that there are some ATM fees with KeyBank cards unless you use KeyBank or Allpoint ATMs. You might want to consider setting up direct deposit once you have access to your funds - it's generally more reliable for future payments.
