My ny unemployment debit card stolen and used - need help getting replacement

I got laid off due to the pandemic and applied for unemployment benefits in December. I've been certifying every week since then, but I never received the KeyBank debit card where my payments were supposed to be loaded. After months of trying, I finally connected with KeyBank last week only to discover they sent the card to my previous address in February and someone activated it and went on a spending spree with all my benefits. I've filed a police report and managed to talk to KeyBank about the fraud, but I can't get through to anyone at the labor department - the phone system keeps disconnecting me. It's been almost 6 months of waiting for money that someone else has spent. Does anyone know who I can contact to get this resolved? I'm completely out of ideas and desperately need those funds.

omg this exact thing happened to me! Filed in November, card got sent to old address i moved from 2 years ago (even tho I updated my address everywhere). Some ahole activated it and spent $4800 of my money. I had to file fraud claim with keybank and they took FOREVER to investigate. Try calling the fraud department directly at KeyBank first, then you'll need to eventually talk to ny unemployment to get them to reissue the payments.

How long did the investigation take? I'm freaking out because I literally have like $12 to my name right now.

took about 45 days for them to complete the investigation. the worst part was being broke while waiting. but they did eventually credit everything back to a new card.

this happens WAY more than people realize. the unemployment office needs to get their act together with these damn cards 🤦‍♂️

After trying for weeks to reach someone about my backpay, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to a real person at unemployment in about 20 minutes. Talking to the agent got my issue fixed that same day. It was honestly the best decision I made after wasting days trying to get through on my own. They have a video that explains how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? I've been trying to get through for 3 months now...

Yeah it actually works! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. They basically call for you and when they get someone, they connect the call to your phone. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within minutes.

sounds too good to be true... how does this even work? the unemployment line is impossible to get through

They use some kind of tech that keeps dialing and navigating the phone tree until they get a human. Then they connect you. Saved me from spending hours redailing over and over. Worth every penny when I got my 3 months of backpay the next day!

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

i get the skepticism, i really do. i felt the same way. but when you've been trying for months with no luck, you'll try anything. and this actually worked for me 🤷‍♀️

This happened to my brother too! The thing is you need to talk to BOTH keybank AND unemployment. Keybank handles the fraud investigation but unemployment has to reissue the payments. The most difficult part is actually getting through to a human at unemployment. Try calling right when they open at 8am.

if you haven't tried this yet, email your local state assembly person or senator. I couldn't get anywhere with unemployment for 2 months, emailed my assemblyman and had a call back from a special unemployment unit within 2 days. they can escalate your case.

Thanks for this tip. Do you just look up who your rep is and email their office directly?

0 coins

yep! just google "find my ny state assemblyman" and put in your address. send them a detailed email with your name, contact info, and claim ID if you have it. they have special contacts at unemployment.

I second this! My state senator's office got my issue fixed in a week after I spent months trying on my own. Best kept secret for dealing with ny unemployment problems.

OK so here's what you need to do for a stolen unemployment debit card situation: 1. File the fraud claim with KeyBank immediately (sounds like you did this already) 2. Get a police report (also done, good job) 3. Contact NY Unemployment to report the card stolen - THIS IS CRITICAL 4. Request that they reissue all payments either to a new card or via direct deposit The problem is #3 - getting through to unemployment. Your options are: - Use a service like claimyr.com that will get you through to an agent (fastest option) - Contact your state representative's office for help (they have special contacts) - Try the backdoor number: [redacted due to frequent changes] - Email them at [redacted] with FRAUD ALERT in subject line Once you talk to unemployment, request that they switch you to direct deposit instead of another card. Much safer. KeyBank's investigation can take 45-90 days, but unemployment can often reissue payments faster once they confirm fraud. Don't give up - this is YOUR money and you're entitled to it!

Thank you so much for the detailed info! I'm going to try Claimyr since it seems like the fastest option and I really need this resolved ASAP.

Just wanted to add that when this happened to me, I also filed a complaint with the CFPB (consumer financial protection bureau) and that seemed to light a fire under KeyBank.

This is such a common issue, it's ridiculous. My roommate had her card stolen last year too. The whole KeyBank system seems to be a security nightmare.

whatever you do DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. dates you called, who you spoke to, report numbers, etc. you'll need this later when they inevitably lose track of your case 🙄

The same EXACT thing happened to me! First they ghosted me for 4 months, then when I finally reached KeyBank they told me someone spent all my money in Florida (I live in NY and have never even been to FL). I eventually got it resolved by calling the fraud department at KeyBank (833-462-2652) every single day, and then contacting unemployment through Twitter DM believe it or not. The social media team actually responded!

wait for real? does ny unemployment actually respond on twitter? might have to try this...

0 coins

yeah they do! it's not immediate but i got a response in like 2 days which is WAY faster than trying to call lol. just be super specific about your issue in the DM

Brooooo this is literally why i switched to direct deposit as soon as i got approved. those keycards are sketchy AF. I've heard so many fraud stories. hope you get your $$ back soon. the system is such garbage 🗑️

Dude check ur messages I think I DMed you

This is like the 5th post I've seen about this in the past month. Seems like theres a huge problem with these unemployment cards being stolen. Makes me wonder if there's an inside job happening... 🤔

I've been thinking the same thing!! How do so many of these cards get intercepted? Something fishy is definitely going on.

My cousin works for USPS and says mail theft is at an all-time high right now. People are literally following mail trucks and stealing anything that looks like it might have $ or cards.

Use claimyr.com to get through to unemployment. Was in the same boat as you, tried calling 50+ times and either got hung up on or was on hold forever. Used their service and got connected to a real person in under 30 min. The agent was able to put notes on my account about the fraud and start the process of reissuing my benefits.

0 coins

Thanks, I'll definitely try this. Did it take long for them to reissue your benefits after you spoke with someone?

0 coins

Once I got through to a rep, they flagged my account for priority processing. Got my new payments (via direct deposit this time!) about 7 business days later. The old stolen funds took about 6 weeks for the full investigation, but at least I was getting new payments in the meantime.

Have you tried the unemployment office's online message system? I couldn't get through on the phone either but sent a secure message through my online account and they actually responded in about a week. Not fast but better than nothing.

0 coins

keybank is THE WORST. literally the most incompetent bank I've ever dealt with. took me 3 months to get my money back after fraud. i feel ur pain.

0 coins

FR tho!!! Why does NY unemployment even use them? Their customer service is a joke. 🤡

0 coins

they don't even have physical branches in most places! how does that make any sense for unemployment benefits???

CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR!!!! I cannot stress this enough. The regular unemployment phone lines are useless. My state senator's office got my issue fixed in ONE WEEK after I spent 4 months trying to fix it myself.
