Got random KeyBank card in mail after ny unemployment ended months ago - identity theft?

So I just got this KeyBank debit card in the mail yesterday, totally out of nowhere. My unemployment benefits ended back in October of last year, and I've been working at a new job since December. I already had a direct deposit setup when I was on unemployment, never used a card for my benefits. The card came with a letter saying it was for my unemployment benefits, but I haven't filed in months! Called KeyBank and they confirmed my address and last 4 of SSN were updated in their system in February. I NEVER did this update. I'm freaking out thinking someone has stolen my identity and is trying to collect benefits using my info. I've tried calling ny unemployment about 20 times over the past two days but can't get through to anyone. Anyone else dealt with something like this? Should I freeze my credit or file a police report?

This is 100% fraud. Someone is trying to collect benefits using your identity. You need to report this to NYSDOL fraud department asap! Call them, email them, and even try reporting through their website. Also freeze your credit reports immediately at all three bureaus. This happened to my cousin last year and it was a nightmare to sort out.

Thanks for confirming what I was afraid of. I've been trying to call but cant get through to anyone 😡 How long did it take your cousin to sort it out?

It took him almost 4 months to get everything cleared up. The key was finally getting through to a real person at NYSDOL. He had to keep calling every single day.

Yeah OP definately file a police report too, you'll need that documentation later. And check ur credit report. This kind of fraud hardly ever happens in isolation.

After trying for DAYS to reach someone at ny unemployment about my identity theft issue, I finally tried this service called claimyr.com and it was a game changer. They called NYSDOL for me, waited on hold, then connected me directly to an agent when someone finally picked up. Talking to a live person got my fraud case started immediately. Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - seriously was worth every penny to finally get this resolved!

Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my overpayment notice.

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 3 weeks of calling. They got me through to someone in about 2 hours. The agent I spoke with fixed my issue right away.

another service promising to solve the impossible? 🙄 sure jan

Not promising anything magical - they literally just stay on hold so you don't have to. The unemployment office still has to help you, but Claimyr just gets you past the impossible hold times. Saved my sanity.

Wait how does it work? Do they just call for you or what? Been stuck in limbo for a month with my claim.

They basically call the unemployment line, navigate the menu, wait on hold (which can be HOURS), and then when a real person picks up, they call your phone and connect you. So you don't waste your day listening to that awful hold music lol

Yikes this happened to me 2 months ago!!! Definitely identity theft. Someone filed using your SSN. Call KeyBank IMMEDIATELY and tell them to freeze/deactivate the card. Then file a fraud report with NYSDOL, police report, and freeze your credit at all 3 bureaus. Also check if any benefits were actually loaded onto that card!!

omg same thing happened to my roommate. turns out some scammer in Florida was collecting benefits using her identity for MONTHS. She had to deal with potential tax issues and everything. Document everything and keep detailed notes of who you talk to when you can finally reach NY unemployment. The fraud department will want dates, times, etc.

Did she have any warning signs before getting the card? I'm worried about what else they might have access to.

Nope, the card was the first sign something was wrong. But after investigating she found out they had been collecting for almost 12 weeks! The unemployment office had sent letters but they were going to an address the fraudster had set up.

I work in HR and we've seen a HUGE increase in unemployment fraud cases at our company. Def contact the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov to file a report and get a recovery plan. You should also contact IRS so they can flag your account in case fraudsters try to file a tax return in your name next year.

Everyone's saying fraud but it could also just be a system glitch. NY unemployment had a system update in January and some ppl received cards unexpectedly. Check if any money is actually on the card. If not, it might just be a system error. Still report it tho.

No way. They said someone UPDATED their info in February. That's clearly fraud not a glitch.

Oh missed that part 😳 yah thats def fraud then. My bad!

LISTEN UP. I deal with unemployment fraud cases as part of my job, and here's what you NEED to do immediately: 1. Call KeyBank and tell them to lock the account and issue a fraud alert 2. File an identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov 3. File a police report (you'll need this documentation) 4. Freeze your credit at all three bureaus 5. Contact the unemployment office's fraud department (keep trying different channels) 6. Check your credit report for other suspicious activity 7. Contact the IRS to prevent tax fraud 8. Change ALL your passwords, especially email and financial accounts Unfortunately, NY's unemployment system is completely overwhelmed with fraud cases right now. To actually get through to a human, I've found that claimyr.com is the only reliable option - they call and wait on hold, then connect you when a real person answers. Getting on the phone with an actual agent is absolutely crucial to resolving fraud issues quickly. Don't wait on this. Identity thieves typically hit multiple systems at once, so your unemployment info is probably just the first thing you've discovered.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I've already done 1-4 and am working on the rest. Feeling overwhelmed but at least I have a checklist now.

This is solid advice. I'd add setting up fraud alerts with your bank accounts too.

Sorry ur dealing with this OP. I had something similar - turned out someone had filed for benefits using my info after my legitimate claim ended. I found out when I got my tax forms and they showed way more benefits than I actually received. Took 3 months to clear up. Good luck, the system is a mess rn.

Not to scare you but you need to check if any money was actually paid out on that card. If benefits were paid to the fraudster using your identity, you might get a 1099-G tax form next year showing benefits you never received, and you'll have to prove it wasn't you who got the money. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

Didn't even think about tax implications, thanks for pointing that out! KeyBank said no deposits yet but I need to verify with NYSDOL if any claims were processed.

this is so common now its ridiculous. ny unemployment security is a joke. my husband got a random 1099-G in february for benefits he never filed for. still fighting with them to fix it...

My friend works at NYSDOL and says they're completely swamped with identity theft cases. Best way to reach them is actually early morning on Wednesdays - like 7:30am when they first open. Apparently that's when the hold times are shortest.

this is the kind of insider info i come to reddit for 🙌

Tried this today - still on hold for 45 mins and then got disconnected 😭

Have u checked ur mail lately? Sometimes they send letters before the card. I had a similar situation but turns out there were warning letters I had missed because I rarely check mail.

I check my mail regularly and haven't seen anything until this card showed up. That's why it was such a shock!

HOT TIP: call ur local state assembly person's office!! I had unemployment fraud last year and calling the regular number got me nowhere. Called my assemblyman's office and they have special contacts at NYSDOL who fixed it in 2 weeks.

I second this! My state senator's office helped me with a benefits issue that I couldn't resolve for months. They have dedicated liaisons at these agencies.

Yo this actually works, especially in smaller districts where they're hustling for votes 💯

I know everyone's talking about fraud (which it probably is) but just to cover all bases - did you maybe qualify for some kind of extended benefits or back pay that you weren't aware of? Sometimes the system automatically processes these things.

Alfredo Lugo

•

I thought about that but I definitely didn't qualify for anything extra. Plus the address update in February is the smoking gun - I never did that. Someone else accessed my info.

Don't just focus on unemployment fraud. This level of identity theft means they probably have enough of your info to open credit cards, loans, etc. Check your credit reports ASAP!!!!

quick question - was your old unemployment claim direct deposit or card? if it was direct deposit and now they sent a card, that's another red flag that someone changed your payment method.

0 coins

Alfredo Lugo

•

It was direct deposit! I never had a card before, which is another reason I knew something was wrong immediately.

I finally got thru to NY unemployment about fraud on my account by using claimyr.com - seriously saved me so much time and frustration. The fraud department took my case right away once I actually got a human on the phone. Worth checking out if you're still struggling to reach them.

how does that even work? never heard of it

It's pretty simple - you tell them which government office you need to reach, they call and wait on hold (which can be HOURS for unemployment), then when a real agent picks up, they call your phone and connect you. Saves you from having to listen to hold music all day.

would u say its worth it? their website doesnt list prices

definitely worth it to me. considering i wasted 3 days trying to call myself and never got through. and when someone is stealing your identity, every day matters. i'm not sitting around waiting anymore.
