Got random KeyBank card in mail - ny unemployment ended months ago - tourism relief payment?
Just got a KeyBank debit card in my mailbox today but my unemployment benefits ended back in August last year. Could this be one of those tourism worker one-time payments I've been hearing about? I worked at a hotel downtown before everything went south. I never applied for anything new recently so I'm super confused. Has anyone else received a random KeyBank card after their ny unemployment ended? Not sure if I should activate it or if this is some kind of scam. Its been over 7 months since I got any benefits so this is weird timing.

If you worked in hospitality before COVID hit, you might qualify for the Tourism Worker Recovery Fund. They're sending out one time payments of $2,250 to eligible workers. Check if your name is on the card. If it matches, it's probably legit. I got mine last week!

•OMG thank you! Just checked and it does have my name! I had no idea this was even happening. How do I activate it?

•Just call the number on the back of the card. They'll walk you through activation. You'll need to create a pin and everything. Simple process!

•wait is this for real?? i worked at a restaurant in 2020 and got laid off. never heard anything about this tourism fund???

•Yeah it's real! They didn't do a great job announcing it. Check the ny.gov website, there should be info there about eligibility. I think you had to have worked in tourism/hospitality for at least 6 months before March 2020.

After dealing with ny unemployment for months with no response, I finally used claimyr.com to get a live agent to call me back. They sorted out my case immediately and explained that sometimes these tourism relief payments get sent automatically if you're in their system as a former hospitality worker. Worth checking with a real person if you're uncertain! https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this just another scammy service trying to charge people? The DOL should be helping for free 🙄

•Nope, not a scam. I was beating my head against the wall for weeks trying to get through on my own. This service was the only way I actually got to speak with someone. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast I wish I'd done it sooner.

•sounds too good to be true tbh... has anyone else actually used this?

•I used it last month when my benefits suddenly stopped. Was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got a callback with a real person in about 45 mins. The agent I spoke with fixed everything right away, worth every penny considering I was about to miss rent 💯

•not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these things never work and just waste more time and money

•Look, I get the skepticism. I felt the same way. But after 3 weeks of calling 200+ times a day and never getting through, I was desperate. This literally just puts you in line and calls you when an agent picks up. Not some magic trick, just a practical solution.

BE CAREFUL!!! There's been a lot of scams with fake KeyBank cards being sent out. Don't activate it until you verify it's legit. Call the official NYSDOL number (not the one on the card) to check if they actually sent you something.

•Oh crap really? Now I'm worried. What's the official number to call? The DOL website is so confusing and I can never get through to anyone.

•The main UI number is 888-209-8124. But good luck getting thru. I spent 2 weeks trying. Eventually used claimyr.com and got a callback from a real agent who confirmed my card was real. My friend got a fake one last month - the scammers are getting sneaky.

Check if it has the official NY State Department of Labor logo and your full name. The tourism relief funds are legitimate - I received $2000 about 3 weeks ago. It's part of a state initiative to help people who lost tourism/hospitality jobs during the pandemic.

I just went through this exact same thing! Turns out it was legit from the Tourism Worker Recovery Fund. I went thru all kinds of paranoia thinking it was identity theft or something. If you worked in hotel, restaurant, etc before covid, youre probably eligible. There was no application process - they just identified people through previous unemployment claims. I activated mine and got $2,250! 🙌

•That's exactly what I did! Hotel job before covid. This is awesome news, thank you!! How long did it take for the funds to be available after activation?

•Mine was available immediately after activation! I went straight to an ATM to check lol. Was worried it might be some weird scam but nope - real money! 💰

Since nobody's said it yet - this is specifically the Tourism Worker Recovery Fund. Its a one-time payment for people who worked in NYC hospitality/tourism and lost their jobs due to COVID. You don't apply for it - they automatically determined eligibility based on your previous unemployment claims. Payments range from $500-$2500 depending on how long you worked in the industry.

•Do you know if theres a way to check if im eligible? I worked at a broadway theater gift shop until march 2020 but never heard anything about this program

•There's no direct way to check eligibility that I know of. They're rolling it out in phases. But you can call DOL to ask - tho good luck with that. I recommend claimyr.com if you're serious about getting an answer. They'll get you to a live agent who can check your status.

Happened to me too!!! It's 100% the tourism recovery fund. I got $1750 for working at a restaurant before covid. Just make sure it has your actual name on it and not someone else's. Some mail carriers have been delivering these to wrong addresses.

Here's what you need to know about the NY Tourism Worker Recovery Fund: - It's a legitimate program funded through the state budget - Payments range from $500-$2,500 depending on your work history - You must have worked in hospitality/tourism for at least 6 months prior to March 2020 - You don't apply for it - they determine eligibility from previous UI claims - Cards are being mailed out in phases through June 2023 - Funds available immediately upon activation - Card works like any debit card - ATMs, purchases, etc. If you have questions or concerns about your specific situation, don't waste weeks trying to call the regular unemployment line. I used claimyr.com after struggling to get through for a month. They connected me with an actual DOL agent who verified my eligibility and explained everything. When it comes to getting answers about unemployment or these special programs, having a direct line to a live person makes all the difference. Hope this helps anyone confused about these KeyBank cards showing up!

•This is super helpful info, thank you! Does anyone know if they're sending these out alphabetically or by region? I'm in Buffalo and worked at a hotel but haven't received anything.

•From what the agent told me, they're sending them based on when you initially filed for unemployment, starting with the earliest claims from 2020. So if you filed later, you might be in a later batch. They're supposed to be done sending all cards by June.

I got one of these too and freaked out thinking it was identity theft! Called DOL for 2 weeks with no answer. Finally called KeyBank directly and they confirmed it was legit. $2,250 just like that! 🤑

Def the tourism fund. But side note - has anyone else had trouble activating these cards? Mine keeps giving me an error when I try to set up online access...

•YES! Took me like 5 tries. Their system is overwhelmed right now with everyone trying to activate at once. Try super late at night, like 2am. That worked for me.

So many fake cards going around right now. BE CAREFUL!!! My sister got scammed with a fake KeyBank card last month. Call the DOL directly to confirm before activating!

•This is exactly what I'm worried about. Did your sister lose money or was it just a phishing attempt?

•The scammers were trying to get her to call a fake number to "activate" the card, which would've required giving them her SSN and other info. Luckily she got suspicious and called DOL first. The card looked VERY real tho!

The NY tourism recovery fund is real but there are also scammers taking advantage of it by sending fake cards. Here's how to tell the difference: 1. Real cards come in plain white envelope with KeyBank and NY State logos 2. The card will have YOUR ACTUAL NAME on it 3. Real activation instructions never ask for your full SSN 4. The website for activation should be secure (https://) If you're still unsure, call KeyBank's official number or DOL directly. Don't use the number on materials that came with a suspicious card.

•This is super helpful, thanks! Mine came in a white envelope with both logos. Feeling better about this now.

Anyone know if hotel management qualifies? I was a hotel manager but havent received anything yet...

•Yes, hotel management counts! My friend was a front desk manager and got one. They're sending them out in waves - some people won't get theirs until May or June.

I hate how ny unemployment never communicates about these things. I had to find out about this tourism fund from REDDIT of all places 🤦♀️ Their website doesn't even have clear info about it!

•Their communication is trash. I've been trying for months to get info about another issue and keep getting transferred around in circles. The system is broken.

NYSDOL is actually doing something helpful for once??? 🤯 I'm shocked. But yes, this tourism fund is real. My roommate who worked at a museum got his payment last week.

Quick tip: If you do activate the card, transfer the money to your bank account right away. Some people have reported issues with the KeyBank cards getting frozen randomly.

Marina Hendrix
•Thanks for the tip! What's the best way to transfer it? Can I do it online?
0 coins
Sasha Reese
•Yep! Once you activate the card, you can set up online access at KeyBank's website and transfer directly to your checking account. Takes about 1-2 business days to show up.

im so confused about this tourism thing. i worked at a restaurant in queens for 3 years and got laid off march 2020. never heard about applying for this. am i automatically getting something or did i miss a deadline to apply??

•You didn't miss anything! There was no application process. They're using data from previous unemployment claims to identify eligible workers. If you filed for unemployment in 2020 after losing your restaurant job, you should be on their list. Cards are being mailed through June.
