Got random All Access MetBank Card in mail - something to do with NY unemployment?
I just received this All Access MetBank card in my mailbox yesterday completely out of nowhere. I didn't apply for any new bank cards. The letter with it is pretty vague, just saying it's for my "benefits". I've been on unemployment since August when my restaurant closed down, so I'm wondering if this is related to my NY unemployment somehow? Has anyone else gotten one of these cards? I currently get my benefits through direct deposit to my Chase account so I'm confused why they'd send me a card now in October. Should I activate it or is this some kind of scam? I'm worried because I've heard about unemployment fraud happening a lot lately.

Yeah I got one too about a week ago. I called the number on the back and they said it was legit for unemployment benefits. Apparently NY is switching some ppl from direct deposit to these cards. I was annoyed cuz no one told me this was happening but the customer service confirmed my info so I went ahead and activated it. My payment this week went on that card instead of my regular bank.

•Did they explain why they're making this change? I really prefer direct deposit and don't want to deal with another card...

•They just said something vague about 'system updates' 🙄 typical government BS. I asked if I could switch back to direct deposit and they said I'd have to call ny unemployment directly.

•wait is there any fees with using these cards? I hate those prepaid cards that charge you for everything

•From what they told me, no fees for normal purchases or ATM withdrawals at their network places. But there's a fee for out-of-network ATMs and some other stuff. They send a fee schedule with the card but I barely read through it tbh

After dealing with this exact same issue last month, I finally got through to someone by using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They kept calling ny unemployment until they got through, then connected me to an actual human. Got everything sorted out in one call. My direct deposit is working fine again and I didn't need to use that random card. Best money I ever spent to get my benefits flowing properly again! Check out their explainer video if you're stuck: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds like an advertisement. Does this actually work? How much did it cost?

•Not an ad lol, just someone who was at my wits end after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. It works because they basically have an automated system that keeps dialing until it gets through. Then when someone picks up, it calls your phone. Talking to a live agent solved my problem in 10 minutes after weeks of frustration.

•hmm sounds sus to me. another 'miracle solution' that probably doesn't work 🙄

•Think what you want but it worked for me. I was skeptical too but after spending hours listening to that stupid hold music going nowhere, I was desperate. My benefits were on hold for almost a month before I got them fixed with one call.

•I've actually used this too when my claim got frozen. Can confirm it works. The unemployment office never answers their damn phones otherwise.

BE CAREFUL!!! This could be a scam! There's been a TON of unemployment fraud lately. I'd call the official NY unemployment number (not any number that came with the card) to verify if they actually sent you this. Some scammers are sending fake cards to collect people's info when they try to activate them.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. I'll try calling the official number tomorrow but it's so hard to get through to anyone there.

•Yep happened to my cousin. Someone filed for benefits using his info and he got a similar card. Total nightmare getting it straightened out.

DONT THROW IT AWAY! Even if you prefer direct deposit, they sometimes send these as a backup method. I got one last year and ignored it, then when there was a problem with my direct deposit, I had no way to access my benefits for 3 weeks while they sorted it out. Now I keep the card as a backup just in case.

I went through this exact same confusion last month! Here's what I learned after way too many hours on the phone: The MetBank All Access cards are legitimate and are part of NY unemployment's payment options. However, if you didn't request to change from direct deposit to a debit card, someone may have accessed your account and changed your payment method. What you need to do: 1. DON'T activate the card yet 2. Log into your NY unemployment account and check if your payment method was changed 3. Check if there are any other changes to your account (address, phone, etc) 4. Call unemployment directly at their official number When I was struggling to reach anyone, I used claimyr.com which got me connected to an agent within an hour after I'd been trying for days. The agent confirmed someone had tried to redirect my payments, but they caught it before any money was sent to the card. The unemployment system is completely overwhelmed right now, which is why scammers are having a field day targeting benefits. Stay vigilant!

•Thank you for this detailed info! Just checked my account and sure enough, my payment method was changed without my knowledge. Trying to call them now but of course it's impossible to get through 😫

•Yeah the phone system is a nightmare. Seriously consider using that callback service I mentioned if you can't get through by tomorrow. Identity theft with unemployment is no joke - the longer it goes on the harder it is to fix.

MetBank is the official vendor for NY unemployment debit cards. BUT they would never just randomly switch you from direct deposit unless you requested it. Someone might have hacked your account. When I had this happen, I had to file a fraud report with both unemployment and the police.

Has anyone actually compared the fees between these prepaid cards vs just getting direct deposit? The government always partners with these banks that nickel and dime you for everything 😤

•The fees are ridiculous! $1.75 for out-of-network ATMs, $0.50 to check your balance at an ATM, $1.50 for a paper statement. Direct deposit is WAY better.

•i actually prefer the card cuz my bank takes forever to process the direct deposits. with the card i get it instantly when it posts

My roommate got one of these and it turned out someone had filed for unemployment using his identity! He had to go through this whole process to report the fraud. Call unemployment ASAP!

•Did he ever get it resolved? How long did that take?

•Took him about 2 months to get everything sorted out. Had to get a police report, file with the FTC, put credit freezes on all his accounts, and deal with the unemployment office. Total nightmare.

•This happened to me too! Still dealing with the aftermath 3 months later. Tax time is gonna be a disaster next year.

listen the unemployment system is so broken right now, nothing would surprise me. I've gotten random deposits, had payments stop for weeks with no explanation, gotten letters saying I'm approved after I've been receiving benefits for months... it's all a mess. Your best bet is to talk to an actual human at unemployment to confirm what's going on.

•Any tips on actually reaching a human there? I've been calling for days.

•honestly the only thing that worked for me was using claimyr.com - they kept calling until they got through then connected me. Otherwise it's just pure luck. Some people say call right when they open but that's never worked for me.

Just a heads up, there's a huge wave of identity theft happening with unemployment systems nationwide. NY got hit bad. Check your credit reports and consider putting a freeze on your credit if you didn't request this card.

i got one too!! but i actually requested to switch from direct deposit because my bank was putting a 3-day hold on all government deposits 🙄 so far the card works fine, no problems

•which bank were you using that put holds on the deposits? that's messed up

•It was with KeyBank. They kept saying it was "standard procedure" for government checks but my friend with Chase didn't have that problem.

•I have Chase and they've never put a hold on my unemployment deposits either. That's weird that KeyBank does that.

if u didn't request a card and u still getting ur regular deposits, DON'T ACTIVATE IT!!! call unemployment RIGHT AWAY!!! someone probably hacked ur account and is trying to steal ur benefits! this happened to my sister last month

I've been on NY unemployment for 7 months now and I've never seen one of these cards (I use direct deposit too). Definitely suspicious if you didn't request a change. The fraud is out of control these days.

Guys, the NY unemployment system is a joke. I've been dealing with them for months. No matter what method they use to pay you, there's always some problem. Just this week they randomly stopped my direct deposit with no explanation. It's virtually impossible to reach them by phone unless you use one of those services that keeps calling for you (I used claimyr.com which actually worked). The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

•Totally agree. I lost weeks of benefits because they randomly decided to "review" my case after 4 months of no problems. No warning, no explanation, just payments stopped.

•the nysdol website looks like it was built in 1997 and never updated. how do they expect this ancient system to handle modern problems? 🤦♀️

Had a similar issue. Turned out to be legitimate, but I still prefer direct deposit. The card has all these random fees. I called every day for a week until I finally got through to someone who helped me switch back to direct deposit. Keep trying!
