NY unemployment benefits on Wisely card - is this legit or a scam?
Got a random Wisely debit card in the mail yesterday, even though I selected direct deposit when I filed my NY unemployment claim 3 weeks ago. Is this actually how they send benefits now? The letter says it has my unemployment money on it but I'm nervous to activate it in case it's some kind of scam. There's no DOL logo on the envelope and the card just says 'Wisely' with my name. Has anyone else received one of these? Should I call the NY unemployment office to verify if this is legit before I activate it?

Yes, this is legitimate! NY unemployment actually uses Wisely cards as one of their payment methods. Even though you selected direct deposit, sometimes they default to sending the card first. You need to activate it and then you can transfer the funds to your bank account or use it like a regular debit card. You can also call the number on the back of the card to set up direct deposit for future payments.

Oh thank you so much! I was really worried it might be some kind of identity theft thing. So once I activate it, can I just transfer all the money to my regular bank account?

I got one of those too! I was super confused because I definitely clicked direct deposit when applying. Called the unemployment office like 20 times and couldn't get through to anybody. The whole system is a MESS!!

Same here! I think everyone gets the card automatically. I waited 2 hours on hold trying to ask about it before giving up.

I received that card about 2 months ago. It's definitely legit - NY unemployment uses them. But beware there's a $1.50 fee when you use ATMs outside their network and a $0.25 fee if you check your balance at an ATM. I recommend transferring the full amount to your personal bank account right after payments hit to avoid fees.

Thanks for the heads up on the fees! I'll definitely transfer it out as soon as I can. Do I need to set up an online account with Wisely to do that?

Exactly what happened to me. The Wisely card is the default payment method used by NY unemployment. I was able to go online after activating the card and switch to direct deposit for future payments. You'll need your routing and account numbers to set it up. The website is on the paperwork that came with the card.

adding to this - keep the card even after u switch to direct deposit! if theres ever issues with ur claim they sometimes revert back to the card without telling u

After I got my Wisely card I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at unemployment to switch to direct deposit. Could never get through. I was about to give up when I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Way better than redialing for days! The agent was able to set up my direct deposit over the phone.

Is this service legit? Sounds too good to be true after I've spent literally HOURS trying to get through to someone.

Totally legit. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for a week straight. It basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. The unemployment rep I spoke with said they're getting lots of calls through this service now.

Right?? That's what made me suspicious! You'd think they'd clearly label it as coming from the Department of Labor or something.

To answer your original question - yes, you can transfer the funds to your regular bank account after activation. Log into the Wisely account online (instructions come with the card) and look for the transfer option. It usually takes 1-2 business days for the transfer to complete. Just be aware there's a daily transfer limit of $2,500.

Perfect, thank you! I just activated it and found the transfer option. Going to move the money to my regular account right now.
