Does NY unemployment still use KeyBank debit cards or did they switch to NetSpend?
I just got approved for unemployment after being let go in April due to budget cuts at my company. During the application process back in May, I chose direct deposit to receive my payments. But yesterday I got a letter saying I'll be receiving a debit card in the mail instead. The weird thing is, it mentioned NetSpend as the card provider, but I thought NY unemployment used KeyBank cards? The letter looks official with the NY Department of Labor logo, but I'm nervous about potential scams. Has anyone recently received benefits on a NetSpend card? Or is NY unemployment still using KeyBank? I tried calling the unemployment office for 3 days straight but can't get through to a real person. Starting to get anxious since my rent is due next week and I'm counting on this money.

KeyBank is still the official card provider for NY unemployment as far as I know. Never heard of them using NetSpend. That sounds VERY suspicious. Be careful as there are a ton of unemployment scams going around. You should report this to the DOL fraud department ASAP!

Thanks for confirming... I was worried about this. Do you know how to contact the fraud department? The regular numbers just keep me on hold forever.

You can report it online at dol.ny.gov/report-fraud. But honestly you might need to talk to someone directly about this. I was in a similar situation and finally got through by using claimyr.com - they wait on hold for you and call when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

Yeah it actually does! I was skeptical too but after trying to get through for weeks, I used it and got connected to a rep in like 40 min. They just call you when someone picks up. Best money I spent after weeks of stress https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

No offense taken! I get being cautious. They don't ask for any personal info - they literally just call the DOL and patch you through when someone answers. Check their reviews if you're worried. But after spending 3 days on hold myself, it was worth it to finally talk to someone.

I found a service that helped me get through to NY unemployment after struggling for weeks. Used claimyr.com and they waited on hold for me, then connected me to an agent when they picked up. Talking to a real human got my card issue fixed in one call. It was the only way I could actually speak to a live agent after dozens of failed attempts.

100% worked for me! After trying for weeks, I got connected to a rep same day. The service called and waited on hold (took about 2 hours total) but I didn't have to listen to that hold music. They just called me when a real person picked up. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

They just make the call and connect you - you speak directly to DOL yourself. I was desperate after 3 weeks of trying. Totally worth it to finally get my card issue sorted.

I just received my unemployment benefits a couple weeks ago and it definitely was a KeyBank card NOT NetSpend. Sounds like you're being scammed. Don't activate anything that comes in the mail and call the official NY unemployment fraud line immediately.

Sounds like a scam my dude. NY unemployment has used KeyBank for years. I got my card from them just last month. NetSpend isn't affiliated with NY unemployment at all. Someone probably filed a claim using your info. YOU NEED TO REPORT THIS IMMEDIATELY! Also, change any passwords for your accounts and check your credit report.

This is so stressful... I already approved my claim weeks ago and was just waiting for payment. Any idea how someone could have accessed my account? How do I even fix this mess?

The whole unemployment system is a mess rn. Data breaches happen all the time. You need to talk to a real person at DOL asap. Try early morning calls like 7:59am right when they open. Thats how I finally got through.

I had my identity stolen for unemployment too. It's a nightmare. Took me 2 months to sort it out. Document EVERYTHING and keep calling.

Ok here's whats happening: You're likely being targeted by scammers. NY unemployment ONLY uses KeyBank for their debit cards and has for many years. NetSpend is a legitimate prepaid debit card company, but they are NOT affiliated with NY unemployment in any way. Here's what you need to do immediately: 1) Don't activate any card that comes in the mail related to this letter 2) Contact NY DOL fraud department (though getting through is challenging) 3) File an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 4) Place a fraud alert on your credit reports 5) Document everything - take photos of any letters you receive To actually speak with someone at NY unemployment (which is critical for fraud cases), I recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold and connects you directly to an agent when they pick up. For fraud issues, you absolutely need to speak to a human as soon as possible. I went through something similar last year and getting a live person on the phone was the only way I finally got it resolved. Good luck and act fast!

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed response. This is terrifying. I'll definitely check out that service to get through to someone. Did you have to file a police report too?

Yes, filing a police report is also a good idea - it creates an official record of the fraud. When you do get through to DOL, ask them to put a fraud alert on your unemployment account. And keep checking your mail - sometimes the scammers file change of address forms too.

This happened to my cousin and it took forever to resolve because she couldn't get anyone on the phone. Definitely use a service to skip the hold times.

HEY BE CAREFUL!!!! There's a huge scam going around where they send fake letters that look like they're from unemployment but they're trying to get your personal info. NY only uses KeyBank cards!!!

I went through this exact thing in March. The letter is 100% a scam. NY unemployment would never switch card providers without making a major announcement. You need to freeze your credit ASAP and call the unemployment fraud department. Also check if someone changed the address or phone number on your unemployment account.

Omg this is so scary. Were you able to get your benefits eventually? How long did it take to get everything sorted out?

It took about 6 weeks to get everything straightened out. The hardest part was actually getting someone on the phone! Once I finally got through, they were helpful but man was it a process.

I know its rough. If you need emergency assistance while sorting this out, try calling 211 for local resources that might help with rent/food while you're waiting.

NetSpend? LMAOOO thats 100% a scam. NY unemployment has used KeyBank for like 10 years. Someone's trying to steal your benefits. RUN don't walk to report this!

Check the letter carefully - is it printed on official letterhead? Does it have any weird grammar or spelling mistakes? Scammers are getting really sophisticated with these fake DOL letters. I almost fell for one that looked super legit but had a phone number that was off by one digit.

It looks pretty official but now that you mention it, there are a couple weird phrasings like "kindly activate your card" and some spacing issues in the text. Ugh this is awful.

Yep those are dead giveaways. Real DOL communications are very standardized and formal. "Kindly" is classic scammer language. Report this immediately!

PSA for everyone here: This NetSpend scam is spreading like wildfire across NY right now. The DOL even issued a warning about it last week. They ONLY use KeyBank, period. If you get anything about NetSpend, it's 100% fraud.

My brother got the same letter! He thought it was legit until I told him to check with DOL directly. These scammers are getting really good at making official-looking documents.

If you did select direct deposit during your application, it's extra suspicious that they're suddenly sending you a card instead. That's not how NY unemployment works - they honor your payment selection unless YOU request a change.

When I got my unemployment in February, I had a similar issue but it turned out someone had hacked my account and changed my payment method. I couldn't get through on the phones for weeks! Finally used claimyr.com after a friend recommended it and got connected to a specialist who fixed it all in one call. The best money I ever spent considering it unblocked thousands in benefits. Worth checking out if you're stuck trying to reach someone.

how does that service work? do they just wait on hold for you or something?

Exactly - they call the unemployment office and wait through all the hold time, then when a real person answers, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold.

The DOL website has a secure message feature - have you tried contacting them that way? Sometimes it's faster than calling, but for fraud you really need to talk to someone live asap.

This happened to my roommate! The scammers had somehow changed her address on file too, so all her unemployment mail was going somewhere else. She only found out when she got a random piece of mail that slipped through to our actual address. Be sure to check if any contact info has been changed on your account.

You need to call and speak to an agent directly - there's no way to check that online unfortunately. This is exactly why these scams work so well, because its so hard to get someone on the phone to verify this stuff.

Hate to break it to you but the entire ny unemployment system is a complete disaster right now. The scammers know it's nearly impossible to reach anyone by phone, which gives them more time to steal benefits before you can report it. So frustrating 😡

If you don't take any action, heres what will likely happen: the scammers will get your benefits on their fake card, and when you finally get through to unemployment to report the issue, they'll freeze your account for investigation which can take 8-12 weeks to resolve. DONT WAIT, find a way to speak to a representative IMMEDIATELY.

Freya Pedersen
That timeline is terrifying. I can't go 8-12 weeks without this money. Has anyone successfully reported fraud and had it resolved quickly?

The key is reporting it before any payments go out. If you catch it early, they can stop the payments to the fraudulent card and redirect to your correct payment method. But you absolutely must speak to someone.
