Will NY unemployment benefits go on my old direct deposit card or send a new one?
I just got approved for NY unemployment benefits again after working for about 9 months. Last year I received my payments on a KeyBank debit card they sent me. Does anyone know if they'll automatically deposit my new benefits onto that same card, or will they send me a whole new one? I can't remember if I selected direct deposit this time or not. The confirmation page went by too fast. Would rather not wait 7-10 days for a new card if I don't have to!

If you still have your old KeyBank debit card and it hasn't expired, they'll typically reuse the same card. NY unemployment uses the same payment system, and their policy is to deposit funds onto existing cards when possible. Just make sure your card is still active - if it's been more than a year since your last payment or if the card expired, you might need a new one. You can check your payment method by logging into your NY.gov account and checking your payment preferences in your unemployment profile.

•Thanks! I found my old card buried in my drawer and it doesn't expire until 2027. I'll watch for deposits on that then. Hoping I don't have to wait for a new one.

•Good to know! Did you have to activate it again or anything? Mine's been sitting unused for months.

I went through this exact situation last month! They used my existing KeyBank card, but there was a problem because I had changed addresses since last time. My funds were deposited to the card but I couldn't access the online account to check the balance because my address info didn't match what they had on file. Had to spend HOURS trying to reach someone at unemployment to verify my info!!

•Oh shoot, I moved too. Did you eventually get it sorted out? How did you finally reach someone?

This depends on what payment method you selected during your application. If you chose direct deposit to a bank account, it'll go there. If you chose the debit card option, it'll go to your existing KeyBank card if it's still valid. If you can't remember what you selected, log into your NY.gov account, go to your unemployment services, select "Payment and Tax Withholding," and you can view and update your payment preferences there. You should do this ASAP before your first payment is processed.

•I just checked and it says "KeyBank debit card" but doesn't mention whether it's a new or existing one. Guess I'll find out soon enough!

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM in January!!! They told me they would use my old card but then NOTHING showed up for 3 weeks!! I had to call KeyBank who said my card was deactivated because of inactivity, but unemployment kept saying payments were sent! It was a NIGHTMARE going back and forth between them pointing fingers at each other!! Make sure your card is still active!!!

•Yikes, that sounds awful. Did you eventually get your money? Now I'm worried about mine being deactivated too.

I had the same question when I reapplied in February. Spent two days trying to get through to someone at unemployment with no luck. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent and they confirmed they'd use my existing card. Saved me days of frustration - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent told me they always try to reuse the same card if it's less than 3 years old, but sometimes their system flags it for a new one for security reasons.

•Does this Claimyr thing actually work? I've been trying to get through to fix an issue with my claim for a WEEK!

•Yeah, it worked for me when I couldn't get through for days. Got connected to an agent in about 40 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever or getting disconnected.

•Helpful, thanks! Sounds like it could go either way. I'll keep checking my old card but won't be surprised if they send a new one.

Just to clarify for everyone - the official NYSDOL policy is: 1) If you selected direct deposit, funds go to your bank account. 2) If you selected debit card AND your previous card is less than 3 years old and not expired, they'll reuse it. 3) If your card is expired or more than 3 years old, they'll automatically send a new one. You can call KeyBank directly at 1-866-295-2955 to check if your card is still active without having to reach unemployment.

•Great news! Glad it worked out for you. For future reference, you can also set up direct deposit to your bank account through your NY.gov profile if you prefer that over the debit card.
